Low-carb support thread 2016 Part 2

The thread is intended to support people who are already on the diet or want to start losing weight / gaining health benefits by low-carbing.
Here is a simple explanation of this way of eating and how it works.
www.dietdoctor.com/lchf
You do not have to count calories, weigh anything, exercise furiously or feel hungry.
You do have to cut out sugar and sugar-substitutes and avoid starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.
You need to eat lots of vegetables (especially those grown above ground) and protein which can be cheese, eggs, meat, fish etc. You can eat olive oil, butter and other natural fats. You can eat limited amounts of fruit, dark chocolate and some alcoholic drinks in moderation.
You need to avoid anything labelled low-fat and most processed food and drink.

Had the worst cold I've ever had, bar none. It's been here for 3 weeks now and have felt so bad I've left the cooking to DH. No energy to plan, shop and certainly not cook.

Consequently low carb has not been an option as he can't think of anything to cook that doesn't involve potatoes or bread. Despite having almost no appetite I've put on weight already.

Yes, I imagine the cough medicines and lozenges have sugar in them (too poorly to care if they do the job) but it's the few carbs I've have been eating that have done the damage, even though I'm only picking at my food.

Hoping I pick up this week and can start thinking about putting some good menus together again.

Mamie Mon 12-Dec-16 10:08:14

Oh poor you. Sounds like one of those almost flu viruses. Have managed to avoid a cold so far, but exposure to the grandchildren often brings one on!
My OH would be feeding you home-made chicken soup. He is sitting picking bits off a carcass as I write. grin

BBbevan Mon 12-Dec-16 11:39:24

You havn't had a good time of late Anya so I hope you feel better very soon. flowers

BBbevan Tue 20-Dec-16 12:05:54

We are off to the back of beyond for Christmas. Broadband will be worse then here. So Happy Christmas lovely ladies.Enjoy it all. I intend to have 1 mince pie, 1 piece of cake and a big bit of Christmas pudding.tchsmile

annodomini Tue 20-Dec-16 12:30:58

Nasty virus, Anya. I had a bad cold recently and the cough is still there occasionally. Now down to the weight I was aiming at for Christmas - not the ideal weight yet, but I can get into a number of outfits I've been reluctant to send to the charity shops.

BBbevan Tue 20-Dec-16 13:44:16

Well done anon Keep well and have a good Christmas

Anya Tue 20-Dec-16 14:12:26

BB my mantra is.... Christmas starts on Christmas Eve (and I mean eve) and lasts till Boxing Day.

No need to go ballistic!

BBbevan Tue 20-Dec-16 16:52:40

Anya we are staying with DD. She has already started Christmas and I expect will finish probably after New Year?
Is your arm better now?

Anya Tue 20-Dec-16 18:14:31

Actually I think I can feel an improvement this last week. Thanks for asking tchsmile

Enjoy your visit and just go with the flow.

Hope everyone is looking forward to Christmas.

Mamie Wed 21-Dec-16 06:42:01

Very quiet here as just the two of us, but I like the gentler, less frenetic Christmases in France. We will watch the grandchildren open their presents on Skype, then eat roast goose, roast vegetables and Malaga raisin ice-cream.
Have a lovely Christmas everyone. tchsmile

You too Mamie?

Good morning , I lost 3 stone on the LCHF diet last year , but fell off the wagon at the end of September . The weight started piling back on at an upsetting speed, clothes are tight again , knees aching . Damn and bugger !
However last nights programme has got me back on the rails again , it was like a lifeline to me , exactly what I needed !
Eggs for breakfast , I've flung out the bread and left over goodies, and will fill the fridge this morning with simple foods .
Please someone or all of us
start again with me ?

BBbevan Tue 03-Jan-17 06:57:50

Well tow I wobbled a bit over Christmas. The odd mince pie and bowl of trifle, but luckily not put any weight on. LCHF is now a way of life for me and I find the help and empathy on this thread very helpful. So stick with it and all will be well smile

Mamie Tue 03-Jan-17 07:04:11

Welcome back TOW. I forgot to record the programme but gather that it was good.
This article which is a review of Gary Taubes book on sugar and diet myths was in the Guardian recently.
www.theguardian.com/books/2017/jan/02/the-case-against-sugar-gary-taubes-review-compelling-attack-diet-myths
We had a quiet Christmas with just the two of us and we spent a lot of it flogging away in the garden chopping and hauling, so still in maintenance mode here, but happy to help and support. grin

tiredoldwoman Tue 03-Jan-17 07:04:33

Hi BB, when I lost my weight last year , you were the first to say 'well done tow! ' You're a super constant encourager and inspiration - thank you !

Anya Tue 03-Jan-17 07:24:07

What programme did I miss please?

Another Christmas and had-a-nasty-virus-so-want-comfort-food-wobbler here and put on a couple of pounds too. But just been on the scales and it's all off again.

Used my tagine for a very simple veggie supper last night involving onions, garlic, mushrooms, peppers and tomatoes sautéed, seasoned then eggs dropped into little hollows I made in the mixture and grated cheese over everything and the lid put on for 4-5 minutes. Very tasty and surprisingly filling.

We were just settling down to watch TV when next door neighbours arrived upset and distressed as their carbon monoxide detectors were going off, so hosted them for a couple of hours until gas emergency service had sorted things. Hoping you've all got functioning CO detectors as I dread to think what would have been the outcome for that family if they hadn't had them.

Anya Tue 03-Jan-17 07:26:54

TOW - .just go for it again. We'll all be behind you (oops! Sorry! Blame the panto season)

Best advice. Plan ahead what you're going to eat and don't have High Carbs in the house. You Can Do It. smile

Mamie Tue 03-Jan-17 07:35:57

It was Food Unwrapped on Channel 4 Anya. I believe Dr David Unwin was in it.
I forgot to say Happy New Year to everyone.

Anya Tue 03-Jan-17 08:04:24

Thanks Mamie and yes

Happy New Year to all

BBbevan Tue 03-Jan-17 18:57:14

I missed the programme too.

Happy 2017 everyone

Lazigirl Tue 03-Jan-17 20:16:28

Happy New Year to all you fellow low carbers. I was in Montpellier for Christmas and ate quite a lot of fish, but pigging out since I came home I have gained a bit.I seem to be maintaining weight around 8st 7lbs which I hope will keep diabetes 2 at bay. I am just 5' 1" so could probably do with losing a bit more. One thing I have noticed since eating low carb is that I can't eat much sweet stuff but find it sickly.

whitewave Tue 03-Jan-17 20:21:06

Happy New Year. I haven't posted too much but have been following the low carb diet in a very mild way for almost a year and have lost nearly a stone with no effort at all. Put on a couple of pounds over Christmas, so will start again now and if as successful this year will be down almost to a healthy weight. I can't recommend it highly enough for those grans wondering whether to give it a go..

Linsco56 Tue 03-Jan-17 21:00:57

I haven't tried low carbing yet but I feel like a beached whale after all the unhealthy eating and drinking during the holidays. The last of my visitors left this afternoon and tomorrow it's back to normality. I would like to lose a stone between now and my birthday at the end of March.

I will read through this low carb thread for some ideas before I go shopping tomorrow.

Anya Tue 03-Jan-17 22:43:32

I watched the Food Unwrapped tonight. Thanks for pointing me to it. It was lovely to see the town I lived in for many years again and I recognised the monument, Norwood Road, The Bold Hotel in Churchtown and course Dr Unwin.

Another interesting thing I've taken from the programme was the idea of 16:8 fasting.

I was forcing myself to eat breakfast even though I'm never hungry in the mornings. What I've been doing is to make lunch my first meal of the day and to have the yoghurt and berries I'd normally have for breakfast as a dessert after dinner, followed by cheese and nuts.

My 'hungry' time was always early evening, so while I'm firmly low carb, I'm also eating to my own natural time clock now, and while it's more like 15:9 (fasting from 21.00-12.00) it works for me.

Mamie Wed 04-Jan-17 04:45:55

Welcome back everyone and hello to newcomers.
That is interesting about fasting Anya. We have normally finished eating by about 6.45 and have breakfast about 8.30. We have been working a lot in the garden (sings lumberjack song) and I was thinking about how we always needed a snack with coffee before LC but never think of it now.
I was wondering tow and other, what would be most useful for you? Does saying what we are eating each day help? Do you want to say what you are eating and us to give ideas?
