The thread is intended to support people who are already on the diet or want to start losing weight / gaining health benefits by low-carbing.
Here is a simple explanation of this way of eating and how it works.
www.dietdoctor.com/lchf
You do not have to count calories, weigh anything, exercise furiously or feel hungry.
You do have to cut out sugar and sugar-substitutes and avoid starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.
You need to eat lots of vegetables (especially those grown above ground) and protein which can be cheese, eggs, meat, fish etc. You can eat olive oil, butter and other natural fats. You can eat limited amounts of fruit, dark chocolate and some alcoholic drinks in moderation.
You need to avoid anything labelled low-fat and most processed food and drink.

Sounds good whitewave You can have the butter! Maybe a lump of cheese?
OH has cooked a chicken casserole with mushrooms, tomatoes and loads of other vegetables. Still freezing here and -7 tonight. Was watching the lunchtime news where they were digging cars out of the snow in Corsica. shock.

whitewave Thu 19-Jan-17 17:05:05

Yes you've had worse weather than us it seems to be staying east of the UK which is lucky. Did you see the snow in Italy where those poor souls are being rescued from the earthquake?? It was tremendous.

Mamie Thu 19-Jan-17 18:10:41

Yes I did. We have no snow here but just seen pictures of our grandchildren playing in the snow in Andalucia.

BBbevan Fri 20-Jan-17 05:16:13

And the price of courgettes, aubergine and peppers etc has rocketed in the UK . Summer soon though and we can grow our own.

Mamie Fri 20-Jan-17 06:06:28

There don't seem to be shortages or hefty price rises here in Normandy. We still have lots of our own peppers frozen from last year and some frozen courgettes (though no good for spiralising!). Reading the courgette thread, I would have thought most gardens would have room for a couple of plants. I think my essential veg would be cauliflower now.
Even colder this morning and OH lit the woodburner at 0530. We can't think of anything we fancy more for dinner than cassoulet, grin
Did anyone watch Horizon on clean eating last night? We recorded it, but reading my Twitter timeline this morning I am not sure whether to bother?

BBbevan Fri 20-Jan-17 07:00:10

On the news yesterday it said that last year a box of courgettes, wholesale was £6 Now it is £20 !

Anya Fri 20-Jan-17 07:51:01

I've recorded that too Mamie

Had a lovely, surprisingly tasty veggie meal last night using my tagine, involved onions, garlic, peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, eggs and cheese.

BBbevan Fri 20-Jan-17 17:20:23

Fish stew tonight with Orange and fennel. Goodness knows what SiL will make of it but I have kept two pieces of fish aside in case I have to do fish and chips?

Granarchist Fri 20-Jan-17 17:34:44

why would anyone want to buy out of season courgettes? We grow them and freeze the glut with tomatoes as ratatouille to eat thru the winter, or courgette soup - delicious. If you eat seasonally it is so much cheaper.

Riverwalk Fri 20-Jan-17 18:11:42

why would anyone want to buy out of season courgettes?

Well for those of us who don't grow our own, what's the alternative? I assume that the courgettes I bought today helped a grower and contributed to the greater good of mankind.

Some of us buy for convenience.

M0nica Fri 20-Jan-17 18:47:58

If you are growing and freezing courgettes , which not everybody is in a position to do, then you are consuming courgettes out of season.

Why should consuming courgette soup or ratatouille out of season be limited only to those with a garden and fit enough to grow vegetables?

Was it the buying or the consuming that bothered you Granarchist?

BBbevan Fri 20-Jan-17 21:02:03

Lots of the LCHF recipes require courgettes. A necessity for me

Mamie Sat 21-Jan-17 06:04:37

Yes, you can't spiralize a frozen courgette!

Please could someone tell me if any special kind of sausage is required in the diet doctor recepies or are the ones from my local butcher ok. thank you

BBbevan Sun 22-Jan-17 20:38:26

A good quality sausage is all that is required canarygirL

Canarygirl1 Sun 22-Jan-17 21:15:55

thanks for the info - shopping tomorrow for all sorts of exciting items!

Canarygirl1 Tue 24-Jan-17 21:15:20

Please can someone advise if its normal be vomiting on this eating plan, I seem to being ill fairly shortly after each meal. I do have a very sensitive stomach (tmi) sorry

M0nica Tue 24-Jan-17 22:34:53

Canarygirl1, that sounds worrying. I tried a low calorie diet once and although I didn't vomit I just felt more and more ill with every day that passed, by day 10, I was too ill to go to work, so I had a couple of slices of toast, went to work feeling better and by the time I had eaten my lunch time sandwich I was as right as rain.

I tried again with similar effect, I gave up on day 4. I came to the conclusion that a low cal diet did not suit me. Tried the 5:2 diet when it came out and it worked like a dream.

It could be that the low cal diet is unsuitable for your.

DH is currently doing LC and suits him to a T - and he is loosing weight.

Canarygirl1 Tue 24-Jan-17 22:43:22

MOnica thanks for reply - DH helpful comment is perhaps thats how I will lose the weight. He may not survive to be 70 tomorrow!

M0nica Tue 24-Jan-17 23:18:51

Sorry, should have said low carb, not low calorie.

BBbevan Wed 25-Jan-17 02:32:05

They say there is a thing called ' low carb flu'. It is explained on Diet Doctor. But it does not mention vomiting, just flu like symptoms at the start of a LCHF diet. I have no advice to give really but hope you feel better sooncanarygirl

Mamie Wed 25-Jan-17 05:10:24

Canarygirl can you tell us what you are eating? I haven't heard of people vomiting, but "carb flu" definitely affects some people. Are you drinking lots of water? What happens if you have a small portion of carbs? If it is making you ill then you obviously need to slow right down or stop.

M0nica Wed 25-Jan-17 07:49:20

I have done some googling and vomiting on a low carb diet is an indicator that you should stop the diet immediately.

It means your body may have gone into ketoacidosis, where the blood becomes acid. It is normally seen only in Type 1 diabetics
www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-3262230/New-mother-nearly-DIES-low-carb-diet-32-year-old-developed-life-threatening-condition-ditching-bread-rice-pasta-breastfeeding.html. You may not be breast feeding, but read the last para of this article.

Anya Wed 25-Jan-17 08:50:05

Canarygirl many moons ago I tried Atkins and what you are describing sounds just like the way I reacted to that. I'm fine on low carb which is why I do allow myself foods with intrinsic sugars such as berries, carrots, tomatoes, etc..

Is it possible you are going for no carbs almost?

It would be helpful if you could post what a typical day was for you food-wise.

Anya Wed 25-Jan-17 08:54:29

PS are you eating enough fats?
