Low-carb support thread 2016 Part 2

The thread is intended to support people who are already on the diet or want to start losing weight / gaining health benefits by low-carbing.
Here is a simple explanation of this way of eating and how it works.
www.dietdoctor.com/lchf
You do not have to count calories, weigh anything, exercise furiously or feel hungry.
You do have to cut out sugar and sugar-substitutes and avoid starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta.
You need to eat lots of vegetables (especially those grown above ground) and protein which can be cheese, eggs, meat, fish etc. You can eat olive oil, butter and other natural fats. You can eat limited amounts of fruit, dark chocolate and some alcoholic drinks in moderation.
You need to avoid anything labelled low-fat and most processed food and drink.

Oh Anya what bad luck. Are you in a lot of pain? Just go with what you fancy for a bit until you feel better.

granjura Sat 13-Aug-16 18:48:58

OUF (pheew) you nearly gave me a heart attack there. Green beans it was ...

Lazigirl Sat 13-Aug-16 18:59:11

I lost the few lbs gained while I was away last weekend but just CAN'T get one more lb off to achieve target weight to check blood sugar levels. Mind you last night we watched Gino d'Acampo in Sicily, and for authenticity cracked open bottle of Limoncello we brought home from there last year. Delicious & 30% alcohol, probably loads of sugar, so that's not helping. Wish I was as strong willed as Anya.

BBbevan Sun 14-Aug-16 07:31:32

Anya I hope you are feeling a little better today.
We went to 'Jamie's' for lunch yesterday. DH had his usual burger, but I had baked aubergine. It had almond yogurt, raisins, pomegranate seeds , pint nuts and mint on it. Delicious, though I could have eaten two. I will try to reproduce that one of these days.
And the bonus was I have lost another lb.

BBbevan Sun 14-Aug-16 08:06:58

Forgot to say. I bought some of the Edamame and Mung Bean Fettucine from Holland and Barret. They also do a Black Bean Spaghetti. Not eaten them yet , but I am making a spaghetti sauce at the moment.

Anya Sun 14-Aug-16 09:39:45

BB don't overcooked the 'pasta' go for minimum...is it 7 minutes?

Day 80/100 no alcohol.

Back in Wales for the summer as 40 degrees C and 80% humidity was a bit wearing. Is there anywhere that sells low carb bread? I asked in M&S and got a 'No', the Tesco variety by Warburton is OK but very dry, and Waitrose hasn't anything either. Just would like a sandwich occasionally hmm

BBbevan Mon 15-Aug-16 18:46:46

Which part of Wales are you in Pippa My DD lives near Kidwelly and she has had no luck with low- card bread. I think Lidl do a high protein roll, if there is one near you

Pippa000 Tue 16-Aug-16 12:41:40

I will try Lidl in Bridgend, which is not too far away, funnily enough I can get a really lovely low carb German type bread in Cyprus but it does not appear on the manufacturers website or I would get some on line.

Riverwalk Tue 16-Aug-16 13:38:28

For those times when I must have a sandwich I keep Warburton's Wholemeal Sandwich Thins in the freezer - about 18g carb each.

BBbevan Tue 16-Aug-16 16:50:29

I have just made the Diet Doctor low carb granola. It has tumeric in it and tastes a bit curryish. You are supposed to have it with Greek yogurt and a few berries. Don't know if the tastes will go together though. Hey Ho, try anything once.

BBbevan Wed 17-Aug-16 12:52:34

Well it wasn't that bad Next time, though , I will leave out the turmeric and add another spice.

Mamie Wed 17-Aug-16 13:32:58

Hmm - not sure I would fancy the coconut either!
Hope you are managing OK Anya.
Still eating the courgette mountain here and lots of barbecues in the shade!

Anya Wed 17-Aug-16 13:50:29

Yep! Still hanging on in there just about. Had a new cast put on today, that makes 4 in just under a week.

This version of low carb is helping to massage away any surplus weight. I'm less than I was a week ago and that's not allowing for a Very Heavy Thingmy on My Arm.

Can't manipulate a fork or spoon yet so get fed up trying.

Off out with DDiL and DGDs any minute now. The little one (5) keeps asking if I'm hurting and she's left me her 2nd favourite cuddly toy, but 'just until you're better nana' smile

Lazigirl Wed 17-Aug-16 13:50:56

Saw Nigel Slater recipe for home made burgers with courgette salad. Courgettes grated with 2tbs mild whole grain mustard, add chopped mint & parsley, with olive oil, lemon zest and juice, which sounds nice, so will give that a go.

Mamie Wed 17-Aug-16 13:56:59

Oh how sweet Anya.
Thought that was courgette fritters for a minute there Lazigirl.
We tried them once and had do go out for dinner, leaving a soggy mess in the kitchen. grin

BBbevan Wed 17-Aug-16 14:30:09

Hope you are feeling a bit more yourself Anya

I think my favourite thing is Halloumi and courgette slices griddled or barbecued I could eat that all day

mrsmopp Wed 17-Aug-16 18:09:42

Hi, I am a late arrival to this thread and I have a lot of catching up to do and a lot to learn. My DS has been on low carb and now looks amazing and says he feels great.
So I want to give it a go to get rid of my wobbly tummy and increase energy levels. I make my own yogurt with the Easy yo thing from Lakeland shop but I don't use their packet mixes, I just use one pot of live yogurt and milk. Makes lovely yogurt which I have for breakfast with a banana and berries and it keeps me going for ages. I hope nobody is going to tell me bananas are 'out' as they are very satisfying.
Also how to cope with hunger pangs?
I need to read the first thread on this topic, so, bye for now! BRB!

BBbevan Wed 17-Aug-16 19:10:31

Sorry mrsmopp bananas are out on low carb. Have a look on the Diet Doctor web site and it explains about fruit. Best and worst. Full fat Greek yogurt is best.
No hunger pangs if you do it properly. Ask Mamie if you are unsure
Good luck.

Mamie Wed 17-Aug-16 20:00:29

Welcome mrsmopp.
Full-fat yoghurt with berries are great. Don't worry about reading the whole thread but yes to reading the Diet Doctor and yes to no bananas (cue for song). Good fats, plenty of protein and above ground veg are the important things.
grin

mrsmopp Thu 18-Aug-16 09:43:52

Thanks! I had already bought my breakfast bananas before I knew they were naughty so no more after these are finished, then I can start properly. Love berries, have been picking wild blackberries. Looking forward to learning more about this diet and have every faith it will help me shed the blubber..

Riverwalk Thu 18-Aug-16 10:19:59

Yesterday out to lunch I had Aubergine Parmigiana - I love this dish! also ate some of the delicious, warm garlic flatbread that was put on the table

This recipe is the nearest to the one I make myself but add mozzarella for extra gooey-ness.

Aubergine

Mamie Thu 18-Aug-16 11:48:15

We like that too Riverwalk.
Waldorf salad for lunch today (apple, celery, avocado, chicken, salad leaves, walnuts, mayo and yoghurt). Dinner will be a vegetable curry from the garden and a side-dish of diced aubergine, turmeric, cayenne and a spoosh of oil, baked in the oven.

BBbevan Thu 18-Aug-16 13:33:23

I have just put the ingredients for that on my shopping list * Riverwalk* DH is not deeply into vegetables. Though to be fair he has supported me in the LCHF diet. He has never eaten so many vegetables in his life. But he struggles a bit with courgettes and aubergines. If I add spices he will eat anything. So here's hoping.
Chilli tonight with the edamame pasta. The black bean fettucine was great.

Lazigirl Thu 18-Aug-16 13:55:02

Thanks for recipe Riverwalk. Will definitely try it but probably do aubergines in oven this time as set smoke alarm off last time I griddled!
