#walk1000miles in 2017

Could someone tell me which 1000 walk challenge it is, there are so many, and what the cause is for. I love walking so really up for it. Thanks.

The 1000 mile challenge is sold out, if I have the correct link. Anyone else have this Problem?

I walk twice a day, not because I'm virtuous but because of the dogs. One outing I listen to women's hour podcast and the second one catch up with the archers. The time and distance just flies by.

OmronIII pedometer really good not the cheapest pedometer but I thinit it is better than my Fitbit charge.

Grannyknot, this is the up-to-date version of the 3 axes pedometer I use. It is very accurate and can be carried in a pocket or bag, or around your neck. The cheaper ones that clip onto a belt or waistband are usually rubbish! I don't think I am a Fitbit person either, too much of a faff!

I had a 'Fitbit' last year - it went wrong and I returned it - but on a fairly busy but not frantic day I clocked up 13,000 steps. It's amazing to discover just how much ground we do cover on an average day - rarely less than the 10,000 steps suggested as a good idea.

Just took a look....think I might give it a try, might get me walking further with the dogs lol....

I used Leslie Sansone youtube to walk before we invested in a treadmill. They're very good and let you gradually increase the exercise as you get fitter.

I try to walk 3 1/2 miles 4 days a week in the Winter as I live in a village with no proper lighting and 3 days a week I gave to work and don't have time because it's too dark, when I get home and have to leave at 8am.
I do have a mini rebounder, perhaps I'll start that again

I know I've mentioned these DVDs before on other posts and at the risk of being a bit evangelical about them I'm going to mention them again. Have you tried Leslie Sansone's Walk At Home discs - also Jessica Smith? Great focused exercise which you can do at home - never mind the weather. They can be tailored to all sorts of abilities. L.Sansone particularly measures the walks in miles. You can buy them on Amazon.
Having got a bit porky last year I'm going to get back into them. I find I do best if I start the day with one.

A great challenge for 2017! Im recovering from left hip replacement 2 months ago & very keen to walk as much as possible every day. Its amazing how addictive the iphone step tracker is! My DD introduced me to it & it's now part of my daily routine, averaging 4-5000 steps per day. Like others, i feel restless if i havent achieved at least that number & push myself to do more. Try it!

Can you post the link because there are so many facebook pages about it? Is there a UK page or is it the USA one?

My iphone health app measures the distance I walk daily outdoors and, as we walk everywhere 90% of the time, I usually do at least 5 miles, not counting the to-ing and fro-ing in a 3-storey house. If I haven't walked at least 10,000 steps, I become restless. Yesterday( not unsually), we walked almost 10 miles.

If you just want to count steps, you can buy a decent pedometer for a fiver. The simple Daffodil ones are good. I should know, I've had four (just remember to check your pockets before setting the washing machine off ).

What a good idea - there is a step counter app on my mobile I use it - a round of golf is 1200 so I should reach 1000.

granny the fitbit is fab for counting steps, even if you don't use it for anything else. It's not a faff! Really!

getting on my daughter has a FitBit but it seems like a faff to me. I'm not sure I'm the FitBit type.

Grannyknot, I walk for an hour first thing every morning then the rest of the day usually tops up my steps to 10,000 which, as gettingonabit says, amount to about 5 miles. It is surprising how many older people I see doing the same.

This is my new year's resolution. I am determined to have a walk every day, maybe not 5 miles, but I intend to raise my heart rate and get fitter and slimmer (I hope). I'll keep you all informed about how I get on.

5 miles a day is the equivalent of around 10,000 steps. That's the recommended daily number, so easily attainable.
