I think how easy it is to maintain weight after slimming down depends on how slowly you lost the weight in the first place. When I dieted hard and saw the pounds dropping off, it was easy to think, once I had lost the weight, that I wouldn't have to carry on once I had achieved my goal. That approach never worked as the pounds crept back again. Three years ago, I started the 5:2 diet. I'm not particularly advocating the 5:2 but a steady, controlled weight loss over time actually reset my 'eyes bigger than my stomach' syndrome! I've lost three stones and maintained the loss. Perhaps I don't want to eat as much as I did, but I don't deprive myself of treats such as meals out with friends, desserts, even chocolates but I know when I'm at risk of getting out of calorie balance and adjust as I go along. It's not a chore, I don't think about it any more and don't count calories. I weigh myself weekly. After all the years of trying to lose weight, I am comfortable and can wear the clothes I like - without the big knickers (just pretty ones I hasten to add).
