Hi you slim people I'm envious

I'd be very interested if you wouldn't mind listing exactly what you eat on an average day.

Perhaps this could give me an insight into where I'm going wrong

Breakfast is cereal or toast or fruit. We have our main meal at midday with a glass of wine. After that it's small meals and most nights cheese and crackers for supper. I think that helps to keep the weight off as you tend to work it off in the afternoon.

I have managed to loss weight (about a stone and half) drpped from 16 to 14 and keep it off by cutting out all refined sugar.

Typical day.
Breakfast - Porridge made with water 1/3 oat bran 2/3 oats, a spoonful if chia seeds, bit of fruit and a dollop of full fat yoghurt.
Lunch - some sort of salad with lean meat or tinned sardines left overs from day before.
Dinner - Variety of dishes cooked from scratch, vegetables, fish/meat. Apple for dessert

No snacks or biscuits. Keep bread intake low Tea, coffee made with semi skimmed milk, water. Occasional gin and tonic.
Occasional lapse at weekends but work on 80:20 basis.

Secret for me is making each meal as special as possible with lots of flavour from herbs/spices, nice veg.
Check food labels, baked beans tinned tomatoes and low fat usually have higher sugar content.

Exercise just walking.

I don't eat bread (although I love it) so will have to double up on cheese
hmm

TriciaF Tue 23-May-17 17:48:33

That's good news,*lizzypopbottle*, because I love bread and eat lots of it. I make all our bread, white, wholemeal and fruit loaves and buns.
Going to have a toasted fruit bun with cheese and Marmite for my supper soon.

A study in New Zealand just named bread as the third most important source of protein, after meat and milk, for over 65s.

This has been an interesting thread. I think I've read every post! Seems that to be slim people are either lucky, can eat anything i.e. it's in the genes, or don't eat much, or don't eat cakes etc and the things we know are bad for us, or are active and walking seems to feature as good excercise. Also, a few have said that cutting down on bread (one of my favourites) has helped. So it ends up that I need to be more active and not eat cakes etc. Oh dear I thought I was going to find a magic slimming formula that had yet to be discovered. Oh I forgot to mention the menopause!

I hope you've now lost half a stone after eating the crisps Cari - if you needed to, of course !
although hot chocolate could be better

<grabs a bag of crisps>
<misses the point entirely>

Slightly off thread but an article in the Times this morning indicates that more salt will help to lose weight!

I often notice slim people have sugar in their drinks. The rest of us don't but then satisfy our sweet taste by having a slice of cake !!

Jalima1108 Mon 15-May-17 19:11:49

The same with one of my DD too M0nica
She 'forgets' to eat too sometimes - not intentionally but just because she is busy.

I react to stress by wanting carbs and have to resist.

M0nica Mon 15-May-17 17:28:18

I think many 'naturally thin' people have small appetites, so of course, on their terms they eat as much as they like.

I have noticed with DDiL that she reacts to stress by not eating or eating very little. At really stressful times, we all keep an eye on her to make sure she eats enough. She is just too busy worrying or coping to eat.

I still can't get out t of the habit of cooking for a family, though, so now I try to freeze what's left immediately. Or plan something for the next day with leftovers.

The smaller plate is just a psychological trick I think M0nica, to make you think you've eaten more than you have - but probably just the amount you need!

There is a hormone, I think, which some people lack, which tells you when you are full or have eaten enough. It's called leptin I think.
So I would presume that people who stay 'naturally slim' may have this in a sufficient amount.

PamelaJ1 Mon 15-May-17 13:48:36

You are right Jalima, most of us who have posted are not naturally slim , there probably aren't as many of them as there are "normal" slimmish people who are aware of what they put in their mouths.
I can't pretend to be the worlds expert in nutrition but I do have an idea of what is good and healthy to eat and try to do my best without becoming OTT.
My best tip: Gin and Vodka don't contain sugar but never have low calorie mixer-IMO poison!

Love the comment from varians friend - Haha!
Alot of people have put their weight but not their dress size.
I'm 5'3" usually weigh around 10st 10 to 11st & size 14
Always around 9st and size 12 until I reached 50 seemed to put weight on when I went through menopause.

Breakfast coffee, shreddies and hot milk, or cornflakes.
Lunch crackers & cott cheese & apple if I'm at work (2 days a week)
Days I'm at home either salad sandwich or boiled egg & yogurt or apple/orange/kiwi.
Evening usually meat, potatoes & 3 veg or jacket potato & tuna salad.
Usually go out for a curry once a week and have a glass of wine.
Evenings usually nuts or a biscuit if I want a snack, small bottle of fruit cider on a Saturday.
Not over fond of chocolate but will have an occasional treat bag of sweets once a week.
Exercise: The days I'm at home I walk the dog twice a day.Days I'm at work hubby takes her. 1 1/2 to 2 hrs.
Go swimming twice a week and do about 30 lengths.

IzzyWizzy, LOL you eat more than I do in a day, yet I am well overweight & find it very hard to lose weight, always have & yet always on the go, all the women in my family (both sides) have been fatties smile

123kitty Sun 14-May-17 22:25:24

3 meals a day, no 2nd helpings, no snacks between meals (cakes are snacks - sorry)

mumofmadboys Sun 14-May-17 17:05:19

I weigh every day. If I go up, I cut back. Simple!( but I do like my food!!)

M0nica Sun 14-May-17 10:28:32

I am curious about this big plate/ small plate issue. I cook to a portion size, which is decided before the plates even come out of the cupboard. I cannot put more food on a plate because it is large as there is no more food to serve out.

It is the same when one eats out, the restaurant presents you with a plate of food of a given portion size. Certainly there are situations where food is served as a buffet serve yourself meal, but looking back on my life, buffet meals probably account for less than one meal a week of the meals I have eaten.

Izzywizzy Sun 14-May-17 10:28:20

In the last couple of weeks we've had visitors and I'v eaten cakes and other fattening foods so today I weighed myself and I've put on 3lb .

If I don't cut back now I will just keep the weight on.

So I believe the best way is to keep an eye on your weight and cut back on the fattening stuff as soon as the pounds go on. Don't just ignore it, easier to have to lose 3lb to 3 stone !

I know 3lb doesn't sound much but for me it is as I'm only 5ft.

Jalima1108 Sat 13-May-17 22:30:05

The smaller plate idea is good, norose, recommended by Weightwatchers too.

Jalima1108 Sat 13-May-17 22:28:09

whitewave and Elegran
smile

I have been very careful this week, lost half a pound hmm but just been to an excellent pub for a meal but did not over indulge compared to what I could eat years ago!
My DM was barely more than six and a half stone for years then put on weight at the menopause - I wasn't that thin but did put on weight after taking essential medication.

daphned I am really nearly 6 foot as well, just the mirror tells me I am only 5' 4"" - and a half!

norose4 Sat 13-May-17 21:21:01

Sorry I meant Leesa

norose4 Sat 13-May-17 21:20:10

Leeds could you put less on your plate or use a smaller plate?you have to trick your eyes first , Overhill , I know this is bad advice but try to eat when you don't have much time , good luck

Norah Sat 13-May-17 20:59:30

M0nica, I would agree if food is a liked part to life. Some people don't like to eat.
