I’m a pear !

I have returned to my own healthy eating plan as I need to lose a stone. I am pear shaped with a small bust, reasonable waist and overlarge hips.

On reading the ever sensible Dr Scurr in the DM this morning I discovered a healthy waist size is 31 ins for women and 37 ins for men. I rather smugly measured myself expecting a pat on the back only to find I am 5 ins over the recommended size ?

Onward and upward or preferably downward.

Not a good week in more ways than one sad
For about a month or so I have had intermittent pain in my knee but have soldiered on as I believe in 'use it or lose it'
It was getting worse so I saw a physio during the week and see another next Tuesday. Meanwhile I am on anti-inflammatory pills which concerns me a bit as I believe that you feel pain for a reason and by masking it with medication further damage could be done. I have to be patient tho!
Either way I have not done the amount of exercise I would have done. I have 'walked' every day but not with the usual gusto. Sadly the biscuit box was around too so - as I said, not a good week.
I have put on a pound unsurprisingly but that has made me more determined. Even if I can't put gusto into my walking for a while the biscuit box stays out of my reach!
Good luck to everyone else - I really hope that Shirleyw loses the rest of those potatoes grin
Better news from me next Sunday hopefully!

Sorry about your knee Fourormore. In my book a pound is not a lot to put on, but to those of us trying to lose weight it seems much more than it is, if that makes sense. Hope you are more mobile soon. ?

How do you cope with weekends!!! Its so much easier during the week when I'm home alone but this weekend was a complete nightmare! DH kept offering me tasty things, he cooked a pizza on Sat then a fry up for breakfast yesterday and did a roast for dinner! I had no will power. I kept saying "no thanks" but he took no notice. He's not being horrible, he thinks he's being kind but fgs!!

Back on healthy eating today now he's back at work.

NanKate Mon 14-Jan-19 14:11:00

I always cut myself a bit of slack the weekends and cut back in the week.

If it was me I would explain to your DH for health purposes you are trying to lose weight and want his support. My method of losing weight now is to do with portion control. I would have had everything offered roast etc but would have had small portions. Say two potatoes, lots of veg, cut any fat off the meat. When we are out and have coffee and cake I say to DH 'just give me a third of the cake'. My DH is not a big eater so that does help me.

fourormore Tue 15-Jan-19 15:05:52

Dontask I have my 'Sinday' on Sundays each week. The day I allow myself some slack just like NanKate - I don't go mad but I do enjoy a sweet after my Sunday roast and occasionally a glass of wine. I also have chocolate on Sinday as I know I would never be able to survive without chocolate!
Having Sinday to look forward to somehow make 'being good' during the week slightly easier.
NanKate gave you good advice re approaching it with your DH. My DH can eat anything and not put on a pound! Makes you sick doesn't it!!! grin

Shirleyw Wed 16-Jan-19 03:51:56

Weekends are definitely harder to keep on the straight and narrow for me dontaskme. I like to have a little tipple then which in turn makes me feel peckish ? I do keep it under control though. What I do is roast chick peas or kale so they are crunchy , just a squirt of one cal and sprinkle over salt, pepper &paprika....all free for SW....that keeps my nibbles at bay.
Bless your husband , that's sound advice from nankate, my husband doesn't/can't cook so it's all my doing. Also, fourormore, mine is a slim Jim and can eat what he likes too ....and I'm more on the go than he is lol
My weigh in later, I've not been as strict as last week so hoping I've lost at least half a pound....

Shirleyw Thu 17-Jan-19 03:21:27

........I did lose half a pound, pleased with that.....

Dontaskme Thu 17-Jan-19 14:24:30

Thanks for all the advice re weekends - my DH cooks and also brings me in goodies as he's a feeder!
Been to the GP this morning and asked to be weighed while I was there. I now have the dreadful knowledge of just how much I am and have decided I want to lose 3st 10lbs shock. The Doc said he's heard good things about SW but I prefer to go it alone, although thanks ShirleyW for the idea of roasting stuff with one cal to nibble on smile
I don't/won't have scales in the house (weight obsessive DD) so won't know how I'm doing, but I'll be trying my special occasion trousers on every couple of weeks so they'll be my gauge.

Shirleyw Thu 17-Jan-19 19:14:50

Clothes getting loose is a good measurement to scales dontaskme, also boots has scales to go on. The town I work in the GP surgery there has up to date scales to stand on in the waiting room, for free so I take the people I support there to get weighed lol....

merlotgran Thu 17-Jan-19 19:29:52

Can't you hide a set of scales, Don'taskme? I really think it's important to weigh yourself regularly if you have a serious amount to lose.

If you want to go it alone I can recommend WeightWatchers online. No meetings to go so completely confidential. I've lost two and a half stone in seven months.

It's great when your clothes start to feel a lot roomier though so those trousers sound like a good idea.

NanKate Thu 17-Jan-19 20:47:47

Dontaskme I agree both WW and SW have good success rates.

12 years ago I was battling with tinnitus and being overweight. Because I was so scared of getting diabetes as well as dreadful tinnitus I decided enough was enough. I lost 3 stone on my own with portion control and calorie counting. We drew up a chart which showed the ups and downs of my 18 month battle, but it was worth it in the end.

I also started doing a fast 20 minute walk a day and am still doing it 12 years later.

However I read in the paper most people are successful when they are in a slimming group, not on their own as I was.

Over the years I put back on one stone. Last May I decided not to go down the slippery slope again and that is when I started this thread and with the help of all the lovely people on here we have supported each other. I’ve lost that stone and now feel so much better.

You have to decide what is good for you and remember if you have a bad day just ignore it and restart the very next day.

Onward and downward ladies.

Billybob4491 Fri 18-Jan-19 06:32:04

Nankate, I find your posts very encouraging, I am with SW and feel I need the deadly "weigh in" weekly to keep me on track. Lost 26 pounds in 5 months, dropped a dress size, is it possible to drop a shoe size? my shoes seem a tad too large these days or perhaps it is my imagination.

NanKate Fri 18-Jan-19 06:51:39

Thanks for your kind words Billy.

A friend of mine has also lost weight with SW and I think it is impressive the amount you have lost in a short time. Yes your shoes can get looser. If you wear rings you will have noticed your fingers get slimmer too.

I agree that weighing regularly is important.

My other thoughts are that healthy slimming eating must be seen as a a long term aim. A two or three week crash diet may bring results but it is shown that most people put the weight straight back on, which seems such a waste of effort.

So onward and downward for us all. Spring is on the way when we can show off our less flabby figures.

Dontaskme Fri 18-Jan-19 07:36:28

ShirleyW That's a good idea for the surgery to have scales at the ready! Mine only have them in their rooms so no pop ins to use them available.

SW and WW seem popular but I'm not good at shopping for ingredients or doing the cooking, which is why I find it easier to just do it on my own. I know all the theory, its just putting it into practice! I used to crash diet when I was young and already skinny - I used to weigh 8st 4lbs and was disgusted when I went up to 9st 2lbs! AH those were the days.... I'm in it for the long haul as I know there's no quick fix.

Billybob I can confirm your feet get fat so must also get thinner too. That's one thing I'm looking forward to as I have to buy a shoe size bigger and I'm up to EEE width, which I can get online but very expensive.

NanKate I'm going to start walking too. I have fibromyalgia and arthritis which have made me very down for quite a while, and I've spent a lot of time sitting on my fat backside (getting bigger daily!). The medication I'm now on does help and I feel I can actually do something, so walking it is. It won't be fast walking though, that's for sure, but a mooch is better than nothing smile
Thanks everyone. Have a great day.

Billybob4491 Fri 18-Jan-19 16:00:04

Well I've finally made it! gained my 2 stone weight loss certificate from SW today, cheers all round, another stone to go. Press on regardless.

NanKate Fri 18-Jan-19 16:27:34

Wonderful news Billy 2 stone - RESPECT ALL ROUND ⭐️??? So pleased for you.

Sorry to hear about your health issues Dontask I have every sympathy. I have Polymyalgia which needs bloomin old steroids, are you on those too? I also have an underactive thyroid so battle fatigue as the tablets just don’t do it for me - moan moan ! Good luck with the walking, I love it. ?‍♀️

Billybob4491 Fri 18-Jan-19 16:44:12

Thank you Nankate, sitting here in a happy daze.

mumofmadboys Fri 18-Jan-19 18:07:59

Well done Billybob! 2 stone loss is brilliant!

Billybob4491 Sat 19-Jan-19 06:43:06

Thank you MOMB am in the process of donating my "fat" clothes to Charity Shop, determined not to wear them again

Shirleyw Sat 19-Jan-19 21:15:55

Thats brilliant billybob, well done...i have another 6lbs before the 2 stones mark....

Billybob4491 Sun 20-Jan-19 07:19:01

You can do it Shirley, we are all rooting for you!

fourormore Sun 20-Jan-19 09:46:12

The good news from several strugglers continues to spread this week - at this morning's weigh-in I was under the 180lb mark again! 179.4lbs - a loss of 2.6 on last week thank goodness!
Pleased to say that the physio hit the mark on Tuesday (there is a person-shaped hole in her ceiling nowgrin!) She did a bit of massage and it has been a lot better since. I'm back again this Tuesday. The exercises hurt a bit but I will persevere to reach the number of repetitions that she wants, as movement has been so much more comfortable. Also no 'comfort biscuits' this week so I must keep that up and not hit 180 ever again grin
Good luck to everyone else!!!

NanKate Sun 20-Jan-19 20:56:04

Another success story, BRILLIANT news Four ????

fourormore Sun 20-Jan-19 21:29:59

Thanks NanKate but I'm not allowing myself to get too smug as I have not quite reached the weight I was at the beginning of December (178.6).
However providing I lose a pound or more this coming week I will be back there and hopefully on the right road again after my blip!

Shirleyw Thu 24-Jan-19 15:33:18

stayed the same this week
