On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits. Plus a few others who make an occasional entrance and departure and that is fine too - All Welcome.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.
Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra. I am sure both Four and Shirley will tell you their strategies.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

So Onward and Downward ? in 2020 and beyond folks. Come and join us.

Whiff that's terrible, it's really not recommended with eating disorders. I admit I had a bit of an eating disorder as a teen but that was a very long time ago now and I recovered fully. I'm not punishing my body, I'm doing daily fasts, not the scary long ones so I have a rythem and I don't count calories, big family meals. All overseen by my doctor, I was struggling with my weight and my joints as I git older. My blood tests and blood pressure are now perfect. Thank you for worrying I understand where it is coming from.

MayBee70 I cut my mushrooms or other veg how I want them and portion them up into bags. Do the same with fruit. Well remember the days when freezer books first came out and freezers became cheap enough for everyone to have. Think it was in the 70's my dad went freezer mad. We had 2 large chest freezers in the garage. He used to buy veg by the sack blanched all root veg used the peelings to make home made wine. Went to pick your own places. And put strawberries and other soft fruit onto trays covered in cling film and open froze them before bagging.
My dad got a book out the library about butchery. And then used to buy a whole lamb, quarter of beef, half a pig and cut them all up and into the freezer. Pig's head he made into brawn. Yuk but my parents loved it.

When I had my own freezer when I got married in 1981 did the same with fruit until I had my daughter and used to just put everything straight into bags hadn't time to mess about.
I don't both to blanched butternut squash or cabbage just cut and bag. Don't like carrots that have been frozen. Hope that helps.

Astral you must do what works for you and you know what you are doing. I have a friend who in her 20's fasted then binged and took laxatives like sweeties. She became quite ill. Luckily she came to her senses after her doctor told her what harm she was doing. She's my best friend we are both 62 . We meet when we were 18 at college.

Have a good day everyone

Astral Sat 24-Oct-20 12:14:56

Maybee70 it did at first because blood sugar drops I suppose. After a couple of weeks I felt better than before and I think my body adjusted to not relying on sugar. I eat big healthy meals and have lunch, dinner and a pudding. I've cut out a lot of sugar and go for lots slow burn foods. It's made my joints a lot more mobile too

Well, I’ve stuck to my HUEL food for two days because I’d been binging on bread and butter and felt horribly bloated. It really wouldn’t be for many people as the shake is a bit powdery and the Thai curry meal looks like, well, I daren’t describe it on here. But it meant I didn’t have to think about food or plan anything and it stopped me snacking. I’ve realised that I tend to feel hungry late at night and can’t sleep on an empty stomach so I had a shake for supper. I also found that I’ve had far more energy over the past couple of days. Astral, do you find that you feel more energetic when you fast? Whiff: when you say you can freeze mushrooms uncooked do you cut them into slices and freeze on a tray or do you put them in a bag and freeze them together? I’m a bit new to freezing things. The same with courgettes and celery. They are the things that I need for my lentil stews and I sometimes run out of them between a Tesco deliveries (I’m avoiding shops). Interesting to read that people prefer sweet potatoes in soup. I bought a soup maker a while back and sometimes find I’ve put in too many potatoes and they’ve overpowered the soup, especially when it’s leek and potato. Can’t wait to try making some with sweet potato.

Whiff please don't worry, I take all my vitamins and my GP is completely on board! Even Boots the chemist advertises fasting now

NanKate Sat 24-Oct-20 07:38:53

Welcome aboard Astral you have come to the right place for support and advice.

Onward and downward is our motto. ?

Whiff Sat 24-Oct-20 06:53:50

Astral well done lossing the weight. You seem to favour fasting as part of lossing weight. You say it has worked for you but I do worry what it does to someone's body especially as we get older. I don't know if you take any extra vitamins or minerals which can be depleted while fasting. I count calories but still take a cod liver oil tablet and vitamin D and calcium tablet daily. But as I have said everyone has to find their own way to loss weight. Remember it's a marathon and not a sprint and be kind to yourself.

I look forward to hearing more about your journey and about you.

Hi, I've followed this thread for a while but finally managed to create an account to jump in.

I lost all my weight once previously using intermittent fasting and stayed that way for over a year but then lockdown happened and before I knew it, I was back to where I started.

I was still skipping breakfast but apart from that, not really fasting at all. Lots of snacks and cups of tea.

I now have an app called fastic, 6 days of properly being back into it I have lost 5 pounds and I have 15 more to go. I realise most of that 5 pounds will be water after a sudden change so hoping for at least half a pound a week from now on.

Just wanted to say hi to you all and well done getting healthier

Whiff Tue 20-Oct-20 09:06:45

Cocopops fingers and toes crossed hoping everything goes through successfully.

Well done maintaining especially during this stressful time.

CocoPops Tue 20-Oct-20 06:38:42

Just great reading everyone's news. I have struggled to maintain the weight loss but just managed to stick on 130lbs .
I was fortunate enough to be able help my son with the deposit for a home of his own. He's had a rotten year what with getting Covid and being made redundant. Luckily he found another job after being unemployed for 2 months. I really, really want to see him settled before I turn my toes up. I'm no Spring chicken and who knows Covid-19 might get me! Have had a stressful time ( when I ate too much) submitting piles of forms to son's potential mortgage provider and his solictor. Extra stuff to do because we are a continent apart and I had to provide evidence to show no money laundering is going on. It was tricky finding a lawyer here to notarize copies of my passport, utility bills, bank statements etc. because most offices are closed. I eventually biked a long way to a lawyer and mission accomplished. Thank goodness my son and I have been able to view properties on line and email all the paperwork. It's a waiting game now and our fingers and toes are crossed hoping for a mortgage offer. So that's my news. Have a successful week dear friends flowers

craftyone Mon 19-Oct-20 19:17:50

whiff you have me thinking that I will put the sweet potatoes back into my order, I never did like the texture of leek and potato soup, too gloopy for me

craftyone Mon 19-Oct-20 19:15:18

I am loving my fridge bottom soup with lentils. I look forward to it as my easily digested last meal

I made a shin stew today, cut all the fat bits off a lb, froze 4 meals and ate another. So it was a very good start with the overnight soaked oats, they were delicious and filled me. I didn`t feel at all hungry today but I was busy and the time flew, no exercise apart from cleaning windows. I had a bike tyre to fix pm hence no exercise

I feel that I have to do a bit better tomorrow. Fish rather than meat perhaps. I have had no reason to lose anything today. I can make almond milk at home, I have a soyabella, might do that in a few days, in the meantime I do have some milk in the fridge. I think I lose easier on almond milk rather than cows milk. I am only talking about on cereal

Dorsetcupcake61 Mon 19-Oct-20 16:12:26

It's ok Whiff, you didnt miss me out,I was just adding on to last comment?.
I must admit with all these descriptions of soup I'm looking forward to spicy pumpkin soup next week.?.
Mary berry made a lovely vegetarian dish last week with lentils, mushrooms and sweet potatoes?. It did also have butter in?.

Whiff Mon 19-Oct-20 16:03:53

Sorry Dorset missed you out. Glad you are happy with the truce. I am sure things will improve in the spring provided people behave themselves and follow the rules.

Whiff Mon 19-Oct-20 16:00:33

Sarahmob my everyday lunch is my whatever soup always use veg Oxo. Always 150g red lentils plus whatever veg I've got. Sweet pot ,carrot, onion and lentil yum. I always put sweet pot with leeks. Ordinary pots are to starchy for me in a soup.

Sarahmob Mon 19-Oct-20 14:23:48

I substituted sweet potato for normal potato in a leek and potato soup last week - it was lovely, made it taste very creamy even though it was only made with veg stock. Would heartily recommend as a low calorie but filling lunch.

Dorsetcupcake61 Mon 19-Oct-20 13:43:57

Afternoon all and hi to everyone who is new?. We have so much knowledge and support.!
I love throwing things out Whiff, unfortunately my youngest daughter is the opposite so as I would be throwing things in she would be taking them out! I hope your shin is feeling less painful soon. Work is taking the form of a truce with all parties including DWP happy for me not to be there. A short while ago I very much wanted resolution. I must admit its occured to me that goodness knows what things will be like next year and I have another 8 years before I can retire. Assuming it's safe a job contract might be like a lottery win! Certainly my area in the south seems to be a bit of a hot spot so I will be keeping my head down for the foreseeable.
I agree about sugar craftyone. I have found too much processed sugar results in inflammation. I also try and avoid artificial sweeteners. I had something with sorbitol in last week and things got rather windy. Fortunately I live alone but the cats hid under the side board!
I certainly think in such difficult times maintaining weight is good. Unfortunately I put a stone on since March and desperately dont want to add to it. So I'm cutting back and may do a few days meal replacement. I find them a good kick start and it certainly motivates me as dont want to waste money by cheating! I think it also can be beautifully simple !
Have a brilliant and safe week everyone ?

Whiff Mon 19-Oct-20 13:20:25

Craftyone loved throwing things into the skip. Never realised how satisfying it could be. Did a stupid thing though. Didn't stand back when I opened the garage door. Lovely large bruise on my right shin luckily it was on the bit that still has a fat layer on. No running round the table with my grandson tomorrow. Since I started this diet I weight myself everyday but only count Sundays and always in the nude.

I swapped normal spuds for sweet potatoes . Found I don't need as many sweet pots to satisfy me. Love them in stews and soups as well as wedges with falafel and veggies. Falafel for my dinner for the next 3 nights but with bulgar wheat as shopping doesn't come until Thursday. Aldi sells them in 9s so I find 3 is fine for me. Roasted Tom's and mush with them as well. With a dollop of my homemade mango chutney.

My breakfast is porridge made with coconut milk. That way I don't need anything to sweeten it.

Well lunch time bowl of soup calling.

Enjoy the rest of your day everyone.

craftyone Mon 19-Oct-20 06:54:53

good morning, I envy those with physical projects today, skip filling will be tremendously satisfying whiff. Shirley I am like you in the garden, I get lost in time and I physically work hard.

I loved my overnight oats and added a little thin natural easy yo yoghurt. I weighed myself after jumping out of bed, exactly the same as yesterday. I am a daily weigher now, much easier to nip things in the bud. I changed my organic veg order, cancelled my sweet potatoes and my on-going fruit order and brought in a few more veg, like fennel and mushrooms

I need a dietary push today so am having a small piece of lean turkey breast with all the veg but minimal roots, in the meantime I need to find something compelling to do this morning. It is going to be a dull flat white day but too windy for safe cycling. 70s music and a damp cloth and wiggle while I clean the skirtings all over the house, might also add windows, in and out

Whiff Mon 19-Oct-20 06:01:54

Shirleyw excellent weight loss. Don't know about you but when I am in the garden I lose track of time. Can be out there for 2-3 hours before I know it. Will really miss doing it during the winter months. But I will have my green house up once the paving is done in February. Can't wait never had a one before. Already got my seeds .

My exercise for the day will be loading a skip today hope it comes this morning. I am more active of a morning.

Need to get up now. As I want to make some cheese biscuits before breakfast to take to my daughter's tomorrow. Got to make some whatever soup after breakfast.

Have a great day and stay safe all of you.

Shirleyw Mon 19-Oct-20 03:51:22

Morning all.....lost 2lb this week....it's now the start of week 11 of calorie counting and logging all on nhs better health app.....another 2lb and it will be 2 stone off....so pleased I persevered with counting calories as slimming world gave me too much freedom ??

Weather was good this weekend...I was doing a whif and did a lot in the garden,...trimmed the hedges...with good old fashioned garden shears....build up arm muscle ??

Have a good week guys....stay safe....

NanKate Sun 18-Oct-20 19:48:40

Have not gave !

NanKate Sun 18-Oct-20 19:48:03

Lovely to see so much activity on our thread.

Yes this is the place to pick up tips and get support.

Good to gave you back Four. You and Shirley with myself got this thread off the ground and it’s good to see it still flourishing after two and a half years.

Great going girls. ?

craftyone Sun 18-Oct-20 18:53:30

Thank you for the lovely welcome to what appears to be a lovely thread and I am so looking forward to reading it slowly from the start, I know that there will be many tips for me. I already picked one up from whiff, she always adds some lentils to her soups, I did exactly that yesterday and it is indeed much more satisfying

So This evening I confronted myself, my weight has stabilised, not what I want. I felt an itchy twinge behind one knee, one of those days when I have done too much sitting because the weather has been so dull. I have enough knowledge to take a gulp and set some processes in motion. First I am drinking a lot more water, I am one of those who forgets to drink. Then I went on my exercise bike for just a short time, just to get my blood moving. I did the same for a few minutes on my stepper, gathering dust in the kitchen. I am going to set alexa to remind me every hour if I am sitting. I have flying compression socks, glad I kept them and put them on. My behind knee feels fine now. Problem nipped in the bud and likely was a warning

What did scare me is the fact that my niece got covid, 42 years old and 28 days later, after getting better in bouts, developed clots in her legs. She is eternally grateful that covid happened after she had lost 3 stone

There are no second chances for me, this is it, I must lose weight and as whiff says it is a marathon, a permanent change to my food intake

This evening I decided that sugar is my enemy and I have cleared some `foods` out that are too high in sugar. 30g of sugar in one portion of flavoured hansells yoghurt mix, similar in easy-yo. All the flavoured ones are gone, the natural yoghurts contain 6.7g in a portion, I have kept those and will make one up overnight

I have weighed out 30g of oats and will have overnight oats and blueberries for breakfast, than I must get out cycling or something. I had pronounced mouth hunger this afternoon, I could have eaten a big bag of crisps (none in the house btw) but I got my knitting out instead

Something else that went out, the 4 portions of red cabbage that I made and froze via a schwartz mix, was very sweet and lo and behold sugar was top of the list on the packet. I have another red cabbage from my garden, it will be nice cooked like green cabbage

Whiff Sun 18-Oct-20 12:37:18

MayBee70 you can freeze mushrooms raw with out blanching also peppers, tomatoes, onions, leeks and courgettes. I cook them all from frozen Always buy fresh and prep and freeze.
