On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits. Plus a few others who make an occasional entrance and departure and that is fine too - All Welcome.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.
Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra. I am sure both Four and Shirley will tell you their strategies.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

So Onward and Downward ? in 2020 and beyond folks. Come and join us.

ME h1954. Today I'm delighted that I am able to wear trousers that haven't fitted for at least a year.
It's not completely about weight loss, inches are important too.
Woodmouse losing weight whilst on holiday is brilliant.Congratulations to you x

WOODMOUSE49 Wed 29-Jan-20 12:11:25

Been away at my daughter's for 4 days so two days late with report. Caught up with posts from you all.

14.5 now. 1 lb lost over 8 days.

Wish I could say I haven't really tried but daughter is super fit and a pescatarian so she cooked us lots of very healthy meals. Thought I would have lost more.

Shirleyw Wed 29-Jan-20 11:26:14

Down 1 and a half ....quite pleased with that...considering I'm not going to sw to get weighed lol

Yennifer Wed 29-Jan-20 09:49:26

Thank you Whiff, I do the same Marelli, it keeps me consistent too x

Marelli Wed 29-Jan-20 09:44:04

I've lost 10 pounds since the end of November and I'd like to get another stone or so off. My knee, foot and calf on one leg gives me problems so less weight can only help.
I stick to 1500 calories a day, using a calorie counting book and noting everything down that I eat. I do weigh myself every morning, and I know that some don't advocate this, because weight can rise and fall over the days, but I ignore the rises and note down any losses. I found that if I weighed myself once a week, and on that particular day found a weight increase, it made me feel a bit disheartened and I eventually gave up! This way works for me. ?

Whiff Wed 29-Jan-20 09:37:36

Yennifer that's wonderful. Glad you are feeling better. X

Yennifer Wed 29-Jan-20 09:24:58

More the merrier!

Happy to report another 2 pound loss this week.

Start weight 10.8
Current weight 10.2
Goal. Weight 9.7

Loving the downward trend. Really think the kefir has made a huge difference as my appetite is down x

HI954 I cross stitch whilst watching telly. Keeps my hands and mind occupied. Also keeps my work clean as I am a kultz and drop food .

H1954 Wed 29-Jan-20 07:14:12

Good morning, I'd love to join you if I may? I've managed the portion control bit quite well. My problem is nibbling when watching tv. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Whiff Wed 29-Jan-20 06:20:47

Daisymae we have all been there. I make a what ever soup which I have for lunch everyday. It's made from any veg I have in plus either red lentils or a tin of some sort of pulse. It lasts me 6-7 meals. My dinners are usually a stew of some sort e.g. 2 skinned chicken thighs plus lots of different veg and pearl barley make 6 dinners. I don't use meat mince I use Quorn mince 300g and use 4 lasagne sheets, low fat ball of mozzarella don't bother with white sauce if making it for me and lots of veg makes 4 dinners. If I make it for guests still do the same but make some white sauce which I only put on the top. I weight everything and count calories. The stew I've got at the moment is only 209 per portion and the soup is 72. Always have a slice of bread in it. Porridge is my favourite breakfast usually made with coconut milk if I haven't got any then it's skimmed milk and honey. I can make healthier meals for less calories and cost than ready made one's. Hope this helps.

Felt myself wavering today. I do know that for me the only way to lose weight is to cut right down. I have a lot of vegetables to use up today so trying to think of something interesting to do with them! It's all about the willpower. It does help to read of every ones experience, so thanks for posting. X

Yennifer Tue 28-Jan-20 13:27:33

Different things work for different people. I don't eat breakfast, I eat lunch and dinner with my family. If I want to go out for a later dinner, I just eat lunch later the next day. I am never hungry when I am fasting until about 30 minutes before I eat x

Dec46 Tue 28-Jan-20 11:43:41

weigh in today and I've lost 1lb. Still not feeling well so I can't claim it's down to willpower just not feeling like eating.
Keep going everyone and whatever works for you continue doing as long as it's healthy x

Whiff Tue 28-Jan-20 07:19:15

I didn't understand what 16:8 was . Read about it. I know some rave about it but perhaps it's me but why you would want to live that way. It must restrict your way of living and how would it fit in with family life? I am always interested in new things but from a knowledge point. My way is working for me even though had a wobble last week.

Hope everyone keeps warm and have a good day.

MiniM. What worked for me was the NHS calorie counting diet. They said I should be on 1200 per day but that was too low for me so I did 1,350 a day. I left the scales out to weigh food. Made myself a daily chart to fill in and as I usually have the same b’fast I only needed to add lunch, dinner and snacks. When I had lost a stone plus I then went for portion control and ate what I wanted but in much smaller portions.

I occasionally have a day out eating what I want, but I find I my stomach has shrunk and I just don’t want to eat what I used to have.

It worked for me, maybe it would work for you. Best of luck.

Brilliant result Daisymae and welcome to Happy Girl too.

I actually think the Fasting Diet 18/6 sounds like the way we used to eat when snacking wasn't a way of life.I'm trying to concentrate on eating for health which is ironic since I've been ill for 2 weeks with cough/chest problems.

Weigh in for me tomorrow.
Congratulations to CocoPops too

Yennifer Mon 27-Jan-20 13:52:20

I got down to my lowest weight of 9 12 after a year of fasting, currently the same as you Minimoon. I'd like to get to 9.7 but 9.12 was the lowest I had been for 12 years! I let too much sugar creep back into my diet but determined as I go away in March x

MiniMoon Mon 27-Jan-20 10:56:05

I'm sticking to it Yennifer. I'm eating two meals a day. Lunch or dinner as we call it, and supper.
My Monday morning weigh in was rather disappointing, no loss, no gain. I still weigh 10st 4 1/2lbs. I'm only 5' 3 and a bit inches tall. When I got married I was eight stone three pounds!
I don't need to be that skinny again, but fitting into my posh frocks again would be nice.

Daisymae Mon 27-Jan-20 09:50:09

I eventually managed to get in the scales - I can report that I have lost 3lbs. I think seeing the reality has given me the motivation to do something about it.

Yennifer Mon 27-Jan-20 09:29:12

Husband is getting me some Kefir later, lots and lots of good bacteria to try and stabalise my digestive system again. Bad bacteria balance is not helpful for weight loss x

Yennifer Mon 27-Jan-20 09:08:13

Keep at itMinimoin, 16:8 makes me feel years younger and I lost 2 stone in a year x

Beechnut Mon 27-Jan-20 06:46:38

Thank you Whiff

Whiff Mon 27-Jan-20 06:36:56

Beechnut hope you have a good week and glad to hear you aren't going to bet yourself up over it. Wish I could have told my younger self that.

Whiff Mon 27-Jan-20 06:33:59

Minimoon why are you doing a 16 hour fast? Sorry but I have never understood why anyone would want to do that. I understand that some religious beliefs do certain times a year. But why would someone voluntary put their body through that. You may fine it helps but it's putting your body into shock. Unless you are young and very healthy doctors advise against it. As I have said we all have to find a way of dieting that suits us. Perhaps it's your way but it does seem extreme and I' m just an old fuddy duddy. I was a teenager in the 70's the era for faddy diets. Anyone remember the boiled egg and grapefruit or cabbage soup diet?

I don't mean to be critical but I worry when people go to extremes. Portion control is good if it works for you. I weight and measure everything I eat and drink and count calories. That's my way. You have given yourself a long time to reach your target which is good. But be kind to yourself . After decades of being fat and beating myself up every time I broke a diet. I finely realised its a marathon not a sprint. And guilt is very destructive. I'm a slow learner was 59 before I realised that. I don't mean to be be critical but as I said I worry when people go to extremes.

Good luck to you and your journey.

Beechnut Mon 27-Jan-20 06:03:14

My Monday morning weigh finds me 1lb heavier. I’m not going to beat myself up over it. I know what I have done and have been eating so off we go again into the next week.
