On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits. Plus a few others who make an occasional entrance and departure and that is fine too - All Welcome.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.
Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra. I am sure both Four and Shirley will tell you their strategies.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

So Onward and Downward ? in 2020 and beyond folks. Come and join us.

End of week 3 for me and I've lost 5.3lbs in total. 141.5lbs today.
Like Wiff I find it really, really hard to resist the "evening munchies" and agree with NanKate that it's a mind game.
Cheese was my downfall so I stopped buying it. I've had to ditch the dried fruit too. I've decided there's nothing for it other than to go for a walk or take a bath when the "munchies" begin to attack!
Good luck everyone.

Hello everyone. DH and I are having a special holiday next December. I am aiming to lose about 1 stone by then, perhaps a bit more if that's possible, but I'd be happy with a stone. Never having to diet during my entire life, I'm finding it difficult to find a diet that suits me. The 16:8 diet doesn't seem to work, I've been doing that since Christmas, and have gained half a pound ?.
We've finished all the Christmas treats now, so that temptation is out of the way.
Today I started portion control, along with the 16 hrs fast.
I'll keep checking in with you all.
Monday is weigh-in day, keep your fingers crossed!

Happygirl79 Sun 26-Jan-20 19:34:48

I guess I am probably 10. 1/2 stone which is a lot for me as I am only 5ft 4" tall.
I don't actually have any bathroom scales so I am guessing.
I know by how my clothes are fitting whether I need to reduce my food intake although I don't always do anything about it
I would like to join you all
I am going to reduce my portion size but otherwise eat as normal
Lets see how that pans out!

Maybe that's where I am going wrong, I have tried supermarket multivuts before with no benefits I will look for a good quality multi vitamin, thank you x

lindadoughty650 Sun 26-Jan-20 16:44:44

Yennifer, I would suggest a decent multi vitamin (not one from the supermarket). During winter it is a good idea to take a Vit D, and also a Vit C unless you are eating a lot of fruit. For women in particular a Magnesium supplement is a good idea. Bottom line is a daily multi vitamin. Hope you feel better soon.

Yennifer Sun 26-Jan-20 16:26:02

I think I overeat sometimes because I am low on vitamins. I have problems processing some kinds. 2 tummy bugs and a nasty cold in 2 weeks and feeling low and exhausted, all I want to do is eat! Trouble with vitamins is I never know what I should take? Anyone have any thoughts?

lindadoughty650 Sun 26-Jan-20 12:15:42

I am so annoyed, and don't know whether annoyed with myself or what. Thursday (my entertainment night), I had steak, roast tomatoes, broccoli 5 chips (my son nicked the others), apple crumble with custard, one glass of wine. Not bad, Next day I had porridge and finished off the apple crumble but called that my evening meal. Busy day Friday cleaning and shopping. Saturday - batch cooking for next 20 days so although I did not do a long walk I was on my feet most of the day. Evening meal some spiced meat cooked with chick peas in a wrap. Over the three days I had four digestive biscuits with Philadelphia spread. This morning, curious, I weighed myself and have gained 2 lbs. Wipes out my last week loss plus. Bugger.
Better luck to everyone else. And a speedy recovery to all those with coughs and colds.

fourormore Sun 26-Jan-20 10:20:15

Well done Whiff - it seems we are all holding steady at the moment which is par for the course this time of the year. Last week I had a bad result at the end of a wobbly week, but this morning I'm delighted to say that I have now lost the 1.6lb I put on last week smile
Overall I am 0.8lb down on my starting weight for 2020 - not much for a month but hopefully as we all progress the drops will be better!
Good luck everyone as we start another week! flowers

Whiff Sun 26-Jan-20 09:32:30

Glad to say my weight is the same as last week. Happily surprised after my wobble in the week. Back on track thankfully. Hope you are all ok and those with colds will soon be better.

NanKate Sat 25-Jan-20 08:17:40

Well done Whiff keep at it. ?

I’m managing to keep my holding weight steady, mainly because I have lost my appetite with my current cold. Oh I do long for the Spring.

Whiff Fri 24-Jan-20 22:05:44

Thanks to you all got through today and stuck to my calorie limit. I'm going to take it one day at a time. Don't expect to lose anything on Sunday but that's ok. Good night friends.

fourormore Fri 24-Jan-20 17:31:35

Another tip that I heard on one of the current TV weight loss etc. programmes recently!
Apparently carry a bottle of peppermint essence or essential oil and take a sniff when you feel cravings.
Don't know if it works but may be worth a try?
Keeping on the wagon so far this week with two lots of swimming but when we went today, the pool was closed and will be until about Tuesday, due to repairs needed to the roof after last week's storms.
If I don't lose weight on Sunday morning it will be the pool's fault of course! grin

Sugar free mint humbugs are divine and only 11 calories each.

Whiff Fri 24-Jan-20 12:03:07

NanKate and Yennifer thank you both. I know what to do . Having admitted I was having problems and knowing I have all on here's support is a great help. Thank you both again. Never thought about the sugar free sweets. I'll get some next I go shopping. Let you know how I get on .

Yennifer Fri 24-Jan-20 09:10:51

It's the little sabotaur voice in our heads, don't listen! Drink a glass of water instead x

NanKate Fri 24-Jan-20 08:10:48

Whiff well done for addressing the problem before it gets out of hand.

My suggestion is to prepare in advance for a much lighter in calorie snack after your meal. I often make myself a coffee directly after the meal and that diverts my mind away from chocolate which is my downfall, but only in the evening. I don’t think about it at other times of day.

It really is nothing to do with hunger but it’s a mind game.

I also have a selection of fruit ready for when I get the munchies eg pear, apple, grapes etc. I know I don’t need anything to eat but my brain tells me I want something.

You have done so well and this is just a blip that you need to deal with now. Can you think of some lower calorie alternatives ?

Do you ever go for a walk after your supper ? If yes you could think well I will walk for 10 - 20 minutes and if I still want something I will have it then. Usually the craving has gone by then.

Have you discovered sugar free sweets ? I have them when I want the taste of sugar.

Keep us posted, we won’t be critical because we have all been there.

Whiff Fri 24-Jan-20 05:42:22

Don't know what's got into me the last couple of days. I'm having the munchies again after I've had my dinner. I am not feeling guilty about it as I don't do that anymore. But since I started this journey I have been able to control it. Can't figure it out way why . I've been having 3 weetabix with hot milk and sugar. Followed by a piece of bread and spread with marmalade. 3 nights now. Don't want to do it tonight. Help please.

Yennifer Thu 23-Jan-20 19:05:16

Sorry so many are poorly. What I didn't mention was I came down with the stomach bug again yesterday. I didn't know it was possible to get it twice in 2 weeks. I haven't eaten yesterday and only a slice of toast today. Just made a flapjack as it's my fav and I really need to get some calories into me as I am doing an autism course for my job tomorrow. I can't even bare the though of touching it!

NanKate Thu 23-Jan-20 14:46:03

Linda the word is migraine poor you. ?

Glad to see so many of us posting on this thread.

Didn’t weigh myself this morning as I was too busy blowing my nose and coughing. I have caught DH’s lurgy ?

lindadoughty650 Thu 23-Jan-20 07:57:50

Good morning all. Not a typical week for me. Had a 3-day headache (cannot think of the word, begins with an "m"), so whilst I didn't eat a lot, but nor did I walk as much as usual. Swings and roundabouts! I have lot 1.1/2 lbs. which for me is a very good loss. As erratic eating is my problem I am going to do a huge batch cooking session and freeze at least ten days of one portion meals. No excuses then for eating bits and pieces of anything that is there. I have made out my shopping list for tomorrow. Thursday is my "entertaining night" so I will be having a dessert tonight and a glass of wine, but tomorrow will be a busy day. Good luck everyone

Yennifer Wed 22-Jan-20 13:39:15

Well done everyone, nothing to report this week, still 10.4 but 4 pounds in 3 weeks is still great when I was a aiming for a pound a week x

Dec46 Tue 21-Jan-20 13:59:20

I've lost 2lbs since my last weigh in but more because I have been feeling ill, heavy cold,so not wanting to eat much. Also couldn't go shopping so no temptations in my way.
Keep on being losers everyone!

Yennifer Mon 20-Jan-20 19:54:43

Definitely not on track this week with my wildly all over the place menstrual cycle going on! I think I'm in for the long haul with the menopause. My husband went to the supermarket, this means all the chocolate came home with him x

CanadianGran Mon 20-Jan-20 18:53:37

Good morning everyone (it is still morning here), I weighed myself this morning and am pleased with the result. My goal is 5-7 lbs off my Jan 2 weight, and i am getting there.

I have been fairly strict with watching what I eat, and it has paid off; that and doing my best to get in more exercise. I didn't hit my 7500 steps goal either Sat or Sun, but was close enough. I was busy cleaning and chasing after grandkids!

Thanks for all the encouragement here; it feels good to be a part of a community cheering each other on, and feel we can be honest with our struggles.

NanKate, don't worry about a little dark chocolate - it's good for you! High in antioxidants and can help with cholesterol. As long as you choose a good quality dark chocolate over 70% cocoa. I have a few squares for my dessert every evening.

WOODMOUSE49 Mon 20-Jan-20 09:50:50

Finally

Lost 2 lbs. First loss after 3 week. Now 14.6. It's been great going back to my Hairy Dieters recipe books. Lots of great ideas. Made me keep to better portions.

Nothing much has changed over the past three weeks. Kept to my regular well balanced plate fulls but keeping them to size. Just one biscuit per day. Weekly pilates session (been doing this for many many years). But longer walks with Mya, dog.

Well done to everyone else and hope those who've had a struggle to loose anything, like me, do keep going.
