On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits. Plus a few others who make an occasional entrance and departure and that is fine too - All Welcome.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.
Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra. I am sure both Four and Shirley will tell you their strategies.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

So Onward and Downward ? in 2020 and beyond folks. Come and join us.

Shirleyw Mon 20-Jan-20 09:37:24

Thanks whif helpful and sound advice their.
billybob, you are doing really well. Thanks for reply ... .I'm upping my fitness, I always walk a lot with my work and dog anyway but need to do more. More toning I think. I stop and start c25k lol.
Do you guys keep fit?

NanKate Mon 20-Jan-20 08:26:06

Thanks Shirley for your good wishes.

NanKate Mon 20-Jan-20 08:25:18

Some good advice on here about choosing the method that suits each individual.

I too have nothing off bounds and find portion control is the answer for me. I did initial kickstart my weight loss with the NHS calorie counting. I have managed to keep my holding weight for about a year now and having this thread to come back to regularly has definitely kept me on track.

Onward and downward ?

Beechnut Mon 20-Jan-20 08:03:51

I’m 1 1/2lb down on this morning’s weigh in for recording. I’m a bit like you Whiff with having certain things in the house. I am currently having a cheese free January. Once I’ve opened a packet I can’t leave it alone.

Marelli Mon 20-Jan-20 07:13:42

I've been following your thread for the last couple of weeks, and am finding it so helpful ?. I decided I really do need to lose 2 st. I'm counting calories and have lost about half a stone since end of November. I do weigh myself every day and mark down each time I lose - this loss might not even be every week, because I can gain again the next day, but it does give me the impetus to keep going!

Billybob4491 Mon 20-Jan-20 06:49:17

Whiff. that was a very encouraging post thank you.
Shirley, I was in a similar situation to yourself, left SW last year, just went weighed in and came home. Thought I would go it alone and have managed to keep under target for 8 months now.

Whiff Mon 20-Jan-20 06:42:04

Shirleyw I never liked slimming clubs . Granted haven't been to one since the 90's but didn't like the atmosphere and always felt I was at school. I have lost over 7st by myself. Weighting and measuring everything and counting calories. I took me decades to realise it's a marathon and not a sprint. My late husband loved me for me but as my children say dad would be very proud of what I have achieved. Their is no one way to loose weight which is right for everyone. Took me to the age of 59 to realise that. I found if I said I would cut certain foods out of my diet and never eat them again I craved them. So no food is off limits. I don't buy certain foods for in the house as I know I can't control myself with things like chocolate, ice cream, cheese and posh biscuits. But if I want them when going out I have them but count the calories and also it is only a limited amount. Say a chocolate and not eating the whole box. Had to think long and hard about what I wanted. Was size 32 now 16 . 8" off bust,12"off waist and 15" off hips. My goal is 11st but if it takes me a year so be it. Started on this weight loss journey April 2018. I have probably said most of this is other posts but it's how I have managed to lose weight. Hope this helps. Be kind to yourself I spent decades feeling guilty of I broke my diet no more. It's a waste of energy. Wish I could have told my younger self that.

Shirleyw Mon 20-Jan-20 02:59:42

Morning. Glad your feeling better nankate.
Stayed the same this week.
I'm getting a bit bored of going to SW now, I wonder if I'm wasting money as I just go to get weighed, I never stay . I'm considering not going. Shall still eat the SW way as it seems to suit me...
Have a good week guys...

CocoPops Mon 20-Jan-20 02:11:24

I lost my motivation last week and gained 1lb.
Decided I need a reward to look forward to when I do lose a little. So if I succeed this week I am going to treat myself to a massage. Good luck everyone.

NanKate Sun 19-Jan-20 19:52:49

Well I must ‘fess up too Four as I have just eaten 2 big squares of dark choc. ?

The good thing about our thread Four is that we get back on track after any misdemeanours, no giving up and saying s*d it !

Good idea Four to ask how we should run this thread. We are a democracy and everyone’s ideas are welcome.

fourormore Sun 19-Jan-20 18:16:31

Good to hear you are back with us NanKate - we missed you and we're so glad you are better. Very naughty of you to pass it to Sheila though! hmm
I am wondering if the 'personalised' good luck vibes each day are putting unnecessary pressure on folks? The last thing we need is pressure - feedback welcome! Obviously as much encouragement as possible is vital!
Well folks, I can't avoid the truth any longer - I've let the side down this week and put on a pound and a half. sad However, I know why - and that is the crunch. We will all fall off the wagon every now and again and the secret is not to fret over it! I had a bad day on Wednesday and from then onwards I just didn't care sad Biscuits and scrummy toast are my downfalls and I had quite a bit (of both!) to cheer myself up blush
However, I will be back on course from tomorrow!
Good luck everyone as we start another week flowers

I think everyone feels like an absolute failure if they don't lose fast. It took me 20 years to gain all my extra weight, not going to come off in a couple of months. Instead of trying to lose as much as possible as fast as possible, what works is making lifestyle changes, smaller portions, less sugar etc x

NanKate Sun 19-Jan-20 14:13:19

Meant to say I am 73 and was once 3 stone heavier than I am now. It is definitely worth losing weight.

NanKate Sun 19-Jan-20 14:11:40

Sheila what a difficult time you have had. I have just recovered from pleurisy too so know how miserable it can be. It does take time to recover from it.

Well done for giving up the cigs and ecigs, not easy. Just concentrate on a few lbs weight loss at a time. Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t lose as quickly as you want. Just concentrate on getting fitter.

You will get lots of support here.

Sheila11 Sun 19-Jan-20 12:50:09

I have put on a stone and a half!
I smoked for years, from age 20 to age 57. I gave up a few times. Started again with a vengeance when my son died in a RTA. Then 7 years ago switched to e cigarettes. Finally gave those up last October. Instantly started putting on the weight.
I swim and have a Pilates reformer but in December got chest infection - eventually went to doc last week - pleurisy so on antibiotics.
Daughter getting married in 5 weeks - eeek!
Is it worth trying to lose weight at 68? ??

Whiff Sun 19-Jan-20 08:53:05

My weight is the same as last week. Which I am ok with. Went a bit over on my calories all week . My brother and sister in law are visiting today. Lunch is chicken cacciatore with pasta and apple cake and plain yogurt for dessert. Last time they came was just before Christmas they had only been here 1 1/2 hrs and had to take me to hospital. My seizures went out of control. Been resting the last couple of days to be on the safe side. Not that I know what sets them off. Had them for almost 32yrs.
Anyway hope everyone has a good week.
Before I forget has anyone made fruit leather? If so how easy is it and have you recipe?

NanKate Sun 19-Jan-20 08:24:51

Nfk no one needs to reveal their exact weight on this thread unless they want to. I think half of weight loss/gain is to do with how we are feeling psychologically at the time.

Beechnut yes I too need a kick up the proverbial to get things done, so I am going to just write down on my To Do List some easy tasks to start with.

Beechnut Sun 19-Jan-20 07:56:15

I’ve just been off to read the article NanKate. I’m a one for putting things off so I find if I write that I’m going to do something that day on the GM thread I stick to it.

NfkDumpling Sun 19-Jan-20 07:47:09

I'm being really good this weekend as I have a tempting week ahead! May not have the courage to admit to my weight next week, I just hope I shan't put on more than I've lost!

NanKate Sun 19-Jan-20 07:35:09

Well it is lovely to be back on this supportive thread having now recovered from pleurisy, hooray.

Four you have been doing a brilliant job supporting all the newbies and I hope you will continue doing so. ?

I am back to my holding weight losing the 2lbs I put on just by feeling yucky ?. Although I should be 2lbs lighter according to the BMI as I am at the top of the weight for my height, I feel comfortable with what I am now and my clothes fit so I am going to try and keep steady. I like your idea Four of some of us having a weekly weigh in and I will try to keep to my Thursday or thereabouts.

Yesterday I read a really useful article in the Mail on Saturday by Dr Max Pemberton. I follow his articles and advice quite closely as he has a very sensible take on life. He listed 20 things to do (take your pick of the ones you want to try) to improve your health. He is always eminently sensible and nothing is too hard to attempt. If you are interested go onto the Mail Online and for Sat 18 Jan and you should find the article, really worthwhile reading.

Onward and downward my friends.

fourormore Fri 17-Jan-20 21:46:12

CanadianGran you make me feel exhausted, especially in sub-zero temperatures shock - keep up the good work!
NfkDumpling your mean average of 2lb is great even if it's a bit out! Well done! I love your expression 'a week of being nearly good' as it sums up my week hmm I don't weigh until Sunday but I have strayed a bit this week due to a few 'not so good' circumstances but hopefully an expected good walk tomorrow may ease the damage - fingers crossed.
Good luck to our Saturday losers Shirleyw and Sparkii flowers

NfkDumpling Fri 17-Jan-20 18:17:07

Well, I did a sort of weigh in this morning after a week of being nearly good. I weigh myself each morning and take a mean average as my weight varies so much. The mean average over the last week shows I lost about 2 pounds. This may be a bit out as I was a pound and a quarter heavier this morning! Hopefully it’ll be down again tomorrow!

CanadianGran Thu 16-Jan-20 17:57:19

Good morning, I did not make my step-goal yesterday. I am however doing a walk at lunch which includes 3 loops with a large set of stairs (80!) So that counts as intermittent high-intensity. Good for my heart!

An after work walk has been a challenge, since it is -13c here the last few days. There is so much salt on the sidewalks that the dog is uncomfortable. My hubby has been walking her earlier in the day and I have been using the elliptical machine instead (but missed yesterday - the grandkids were visiting).

I am also doing pretty well with no snacking, and limiting calories on 5:2 regimen.

fourormore Thu 16-Jan-20 17:01:06

Nfkdumpling hope you have a better result this week as you were so disappointed last week. It doesn't help when the scrummy Christmas cake etc. is still around especially if DH is enjoying it! I'm sure things will get better and we are all part of a team. Good luck for tomorrow! flowers

fourormore Thu 16-Jan-20 10:02:10

Oh bless you Lindadoughty we all know how frustrating that feels and we all behind you 100%. flowers
You sound positive though and yes, it's the start of another week so keep stepping that next step, keep up the good work and you will get there!
