On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course from the beginning are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits.

We now have some other excellent new regulars who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Please join us at this difficult time in all our lives with the Pandemic.

So Onward and Downward girls ??

Hi all,
It’s good to catch upon your news again. whiff I’m sorry to hear that you’re having such an awful time with your health. Hope that you are soon feeling much better. Dorset you’ve been missed but pleased that you’re back with us once again.
I’m another quarter of a pound down, and I’ll take that but after today … I expect to see the scales going up again. I’ve spent the day at a cookery school learning how to make traditional pork pies, sausages and scotch eggs. They smell (and taste) amazing. I shall have to be very disciplined not to scoff it all and to pass it around the family lol.
Hope you all have the best of weeks ?

Whiff Sun 01-Aug-21 16:44:29

I know I ramble on. Like it in real life. ?

Apologies to Four for not saying well done losing weight last Sunday and your loss as well Sarah.

User7777 800 calories is to low if you need to lose 4 stone . You could not maintain that as you would be to hungry. Our bodies need a certain amount of calories every day to function. Your body would go into starvation mode and you could become low in vital vitamins and minerals our bodies need. 1400-1200 is a more sensible daily count.

Don't set yourself a time limit to loss weight. It puts to much pressure on you. I know I did that to myself for decades. It's a marathon not a sprint. I have been dam can't remember what NanKate renamed dieting some like eating less for life for 4 years. Was a 32 now 16.

My way of losing weight is to weight and measure everything and count the calories. Others have other ways. You must find a way that suits you. I don't buy the foods I can not control chocolate, ice cream ,bread products and some cheeses. I do buy 400g block of cheddar every 8 weeks cut it into 8 and freeze it. I block is enough for cheese sauce for lasagne etc.

I am happy if I lose quarter of pound a week. But also happy if I stay the same. Remember to measure yourself and write it down. Then measure again in a month. You may fine sometimes you don't lose weight but inches. And most importantly be kind to yourself. If you have a bad day food wise. Start afresh the next day. For decades I went on a diet had a bad day and gave up. Not anymore. If it takes another year I will get to the 11st I want to be. Look forward to your posts.

Four you had a blip week. But will soon get it off.

Glad to say after staying the same weight for 7 weeks lost a pound this week. Had a week though. Monday had my bedroom windows replaced. They look lovely. Had Sainsbury's delivery. Which was a good day. Then it went down hill.

Got a chest pain my cardiologist said in January if you get a chest pain that doesn't go call for an ambulance. So I did told it would be 45 mins. My daughter came over . A hour later a nurse phoned and said there are no ambulance's can you get to hospital yourself. My daughter was annoyed because she would have taken me on the first place. Got there at 9.30pm Monday finally got home 2.30pm Tuesday.

I was given an ECG and blood tests and told it would be 7 hrs before I saw a Dr. My daughter couldn't stay due to Covid rules. Had to be put into a wheelchair as I was walking like Neil Armstrong. Why is it when I have anything wrong I have to concentrate on making my legs work. As my neurologist says my brain and body are out of sync.

There was about 10 of us that was there all night. Other people came and went but we where still there. Luckily a young man kept our spirits up. Spending all night in A&E waiting room when you feel ill is not recommended. A couple of the young woman sleep on the seats.for a while. I dosed on a chair. At least I could walk to the loo. Had to keep stopping to get back in a straight line. Because of Covid the air conditioning was up high and it was freezing cold. We where hungry and thirst as well. I finally saw a Dr at 11.30 and had to have another ECG plus x-ray. He said he would see me as soon as they where done. Had those done quickly
but didn't see the Dr until after 1. I was exhausted I had been awake since 5.30 Monday morning. Luckily my heart is fine, no infections ,x-ray showed my lungs where clear and my heart was a good size. He recons it's a form of gastritis causing the pain and therefore causing my eptopic heart beats.

I used to be on anti reflux tablet as my old GP put me on it after jaundice as didn't know if palpitations where caused be reflux or reflux caused palpitations. But had to come off it this year due to low sodium and folic acid levels. So can only have gaviscon. What surprised the Dr was my heart tape results wheren't on the computer. I have a phone consultation booked with my GP on the 9th. Have a list of questions I want to ask.

Been exhausted all week. Emily who runs the exercise class phoned me Wednesday morning asking if I was going as I would be the only one. After telling about A&E decided not to go . She said I wouldn't loss my free lesson so still get the 12 free. Glad I didn't go as I fell asleep on the afternoon. I wanted to be well enough to go to my daughter's on Friday for lunch , playtime and babysitting. My grandson is great he understands when nannie isn't well. So we played games that didn't envolve moving. He is funny before they go to swimming he gives me my orders . Change his brothers nappy and give him his bottle. Nannie wasn't quick enough this week getting the fresh nannie on. Good job my daughter always keeps clean clothes in her rucksack she takes out with them on the stroller.

As per usual I have rambled on. Hope you all have a good week.?

fourormore Sun 01-Aug-21 09:12:19

As I expected a gain of 1.2 this week but with the loss of 2.6 last weekend I expected it as it does tend to balance out. Also not done 'proper' walks this week for variety of reasons so I'm ok with this week's result.
Welcome User7777 you will find loads of support on this thread. We never ever condemn anyone - encouragement is the name of the game! We celebrate losses but sympathise any gains - they are not failures - they are blips!
We all do things differently - what works for one won't for another.
I am 'good' Mon to Sat (well as good as possible with no sweets, biscuits, puddings etc.) but Sunday is my weigh-in day and then it is SINday!!!! Sundays I allow myself (not to go stupid) a pudding, biscuits and chocolate. I know I could never give them up so I spoil myself one day a week and then march on knowing that another Sinday is approaching!
It works for me as I am averaging a loss of 3 - 4lbs per month.
Others will share their methods none of which are wrong.
Good luck, stick with us!!! flowersflowersflowers

NanKate Sun 01-Aug-21 08:51:50

I’m glad you have come over to YS User. You will get advice from those who have lost the amount of weight you want to lose.

My own feeling is that very restrictive diets can work but keeping to them is very hard. Slow but steady is my advice.

User7777 Sun 01-Aug-21 08:33:55

Have never been this weight before... I meant

User7777 Sun 01-Aug-21 08:33:00

It's the cruellest thing Whiff, you mentioned not seeing grankids. Well my gran was banned from seeing us. She could only write to me, and he tried to tear up her letters. DAD, I mean. Mum was more helpful and posted my letters to gran. We lost out on a healthy relationship with our granparents. Anyway, I came to join you all. My weight has ballooned in lockdown. I have been this weight before. So I have 4 stone to lose or thereabouts. Is a 800 calorie diet a good choice.

NanKate Sun 01-Aug-21 07:46:22

Well it’s a new month August.

How are we all doing ?

I’ve got a recurrence unfortunately of my diverticulitis, so I will have to restrict my diet for about a week, so hopefully I will lose the few pounds I put on on holiday.

Sarahmob Sun 25-Jul-21 12:43:03

Good morning pears, (or should I say afternoon!)
Whiff I’m pleased to hear that you are feeling better and that you had such a lovely stay with your brother and sister-in-law last week. Well done for maintaining.
fourormore congratulations on the significant loss, enjoy those hobnobs later.
Shirley that pound will soon come off again I’m sure
Another small loss of 1/2lb this week, it’s creeping down slowly. I’m hoping that now schools out I’ll be able to up the exercise a bit and that might speed things up a bit.
Have a good week everyone ?

fourormore Sun 25-Jul-21 11:13:49

Good you are feeling better Whiff it sounds a real nasty virus. You recovered quickly. Well done on staying the same,

Shirley that pound will go - what was more important was getting a good diet of cheer!!! We all need that by the bucket-load at the moment. flowersflowersflowers

WARNING - Brag Alert!!! This week I have lost 2.5lbs and am well chuffed! I am expecting a small rise next weekend (always do after a good loss) but it's down!

I won't say that I haven't been tempted by the chocolate hobnobs and other naughties but I have been really strict with myself as I am determined to continue.

Today is Sinday so I will have my pudding and a hobnob (or more?) later, then back to it tomorrow!

To be honest my 'Sinday' regime seems to work for me - I know I could never go without chocolate etc. but by keeping it to one day I can cope. I know it wouldn't work for everyone but that's the beauty of this club!!! We do it our way!

Keep up the good work everyone - onwards and downwards!!! flowersflowersflowers

Whiff Sun 25-Jul-21 09:47:34

Thank you all for your concern. I recovered fully . My grandson's had RSV it's a virus which can make child and older people seriously ill. I don't want to have that again. It was horrible . I have a few things wrong with me which I take in my stride and just get on with my life. But that virus floored me. Boiling body but freezing cold. Had 3 layers on plus a jumper and slept under a thick blanket on the sofa most of the first day. It feels like a cold but no runny nose but a cough and sore throat. That was the Tuesday . Luckily I felt well enough to go too my exercise class on the Wednesday afternoon. It seems to be a short lived virus but nasty. A friend of mine is taking part in trialing a vaccine for over 60 's. RSV you can get all year round but worse in winter months. As soon as a vaccine is available I will be first in the queue.

Just watch out for it especially if you or members of your family have chest problems. What with flu and Covid another thing we need to be on alert for. Will not be giving up wearing my mask this year and keeping up all the precautions and lateral flow tests.

Just thought I would alert you to it.

Had a brilliant time at my brother and sister in law's last week. Much to my surprise my weight is the same. Which was a shock as you would not believe what I have been eating. All things I don't have at home.

They were kind enough to invite my friend who I hadn't seen since moving 2 years next month to dinner on Tuesday at their house. We speak twice a week. But was shocked how badly she is walking. But we had a wonderful time.

It's funny she had said to me I won't stay long and leave long before it starts to get dark. She stayed over 4 hours and didn't leave until after 9.30. Think she felt at home.

Aggie ( Jack Russell) is always trying to shared her ball. For 5 years managed to deflect her but she got me right in the mouth with it. Yuk. Ball covered in dog spit. Not nice. Didn't know dogs could have a look of triumph on their face before.

They have already asked me to go back later in the year. They will be here next month. As my daughter and family where on holiday . My grandson can't wait to take Aggie for a walk with his uncle( great uncle really) and play ball. Wonder who will tire first a 5 year-old dog or 3 1/5 year old boy.

They can't wait as they haven't seen my grandson since I left the Midlands and have a new great nephew to met.

Because it was cooler yesterday spend couple of hours on the garden going out as soon as I finish this.

Wonder are we a conference of pears ?.

To all you who have lost well done and to everyone else keep up the good fight. Have a great week everyone. ?

Shirleyw Sun 25-Jul-21 02:17:21

Morning all, put on 1 lb?. No excuses, ate out 3 times this week , did not choose wisely…
Hope your all keeping well……

Shirleyw Tue 20-Jul-21 15:33:30

oh, i suppose it is Jo*...

JoMarch1962 Tue 20-Jul-21 12:32:59

Ooh, that sounds nice! Is it a bit like the seaweed you get at Chinese takeaways?

Shirleyw Tue 20-Jul-21 03:58:04

Morning…another early one..the dog woke me up to go out this time…..well done on the losses girls…..how are you now whiff ? Hope you’ve improved.
You saying about kale cocoa & jo…I don’t mind it but what I do for a low cal snack is put it in oven on baking parchment and spray a bit of one cal (I don’t use it that often as not sure how good it is for one) sprinkle on flavouring ,and bake till crisp…I get rid of the stalky bits. It staves off wanting a high calorie snack when I’m having a tipple ?

NanKate Mon 19-Jul-21 21:08:59

Glad you have had such a good time JoMarch even thought you have been cavorting around in your knickers and t-shirt ?

I have to admit girls I have been eating too much whilst on hols and need to take myself in hand on my return. I noticed my stomach could do with losing a few pounds. It’s so easy to put weight on and so hard to lose.

But I must practise what I preach so back to the drawing board next Monday. I must keep repeating our mantra ‘Eat less for life’.

JoMarch1962 Mon 19-Jul-21 18:20:01

Hello again dear Pears.
Am back with my slimming head on, after a fabulous week of wedding and full on nostalgia. My trip to Arran to see old friends saw me walking all day, on beaches, whale and seal spotting, and even going in the sea in knickers and t-shirt. The old me would be slack jawed at such behaviour- and amazed that I was fit and confident enough to go for it. I NEVER want to be fat again!
This is what I really fear. Am so impressed Dorset that you didn’t “put it all back on and then some” in your fantastic decade of weight loss. I am that other person; after losing 5 stone ish at the turn of the Millennium I convinced myself that my increasing weight was proof that I was not meant to be slim. Didn’t really understand that commitment to eating less for life- probably didn’t want to understand to be honest- family life was hectic, parents were ageing, work was demanding, yadda yadda, and comfort was to be found in cupboards. So was quite pleased with self when on Sunday, a day earlier than DH and I had planned ( I know I said Friday, but we extended our little holiday) I felt I’d had enough of hedonism and was ready to get back with the programme. I even left DH to finish the choc puds we had ordered with our pizza on Saturday night. Tonight: smoked haddock with an egg, konjac rice and vegetables. Delish!
Whiff, I hope you’ve fully recovered from GC’s lurgy- and Sarahmob ( I gather you teach) that you have a fabulous break to fully build up your resources against the September onslaught. When I was teaching I used to catch one of the many virus’s brought back by the children in September, and still be spluttering in March. Mind you, I wasn’t very fit- might have had something to do with it!
Coco pops- well done on your loss, and tho I’m really not a fan of kale ( it tastes too green, like Brussel spouts), your recipe sounds delicious. Shirley- your 2lb + loss inspires me to keep on keeping on.
And finally (I think I’ve written an essay!) welcome Allsorts! The Pears are the best bunch of losers- in the nicest possible way!

CocoPops Mon 19-Jul-21 04:13:20

Well done on your losses ladies.I lost the lb I put on last week and am back to my target . Now I need to stop yo-yo-ing and keep to target or lose a little more. Pretty hot here (28C right now @ 8pm) so I'm living on cold meals. Overnight oats for breakfast, Ryvita and cottage cheese and fruit for lunch and a big salad for dinner.
I made a kale salad which was nice -massaged the kale, removed stems and shredded it. Then made a garlic, lemon and olive oil dressing. Mixed all together with a a little salt and threw in a few toasted sliced almonds.
Have a great week everyone.

Sarahmob Sun 18-Jul-21 21:55:25

Good Evening all,
I hope that you are all managing to keep your cool in this sunny weather. I love the sunshine although it did keep me at home instead of going for a walk this afternoon, it was too hot to venture out so I found some shade in the garden and enjoyed my book.
Whiff I hope you are fully better now and have a lovely time visiting your brother and sister-in-law this week.
I shifted another 1lb this week and had my blood pressure checked up on after having my medication stopped. It was fine so that’s it, no more medication, losing the weight has brought my BP under control.
I’m looking forward to the last week at school, break up on Friday - touch wood we have no bubbles popped at the moment - I’m on tenterhooks until the following Wednesday when we’ll be past the official notification stage.
Have a good week everyone

Whiff Sun 18-Jul-21 11:23:57

Well done to Shirley and four with weight loss. Stayed the same again. But caught whatever my grandson's had. Spent Tuesday in a jumper under double blanket on sofa and slept. Body boiling but I was freezing. Felt so ill did lateral flow test to make sure it was negative so it was just a virus had sore throat but no runny nose. No wonder my grandson's felt so ill especially the eldest.

Felt well enough to go too my exercise class Wednesday afternoon. Managed to do some exercises I couldn't do last time. Had a good time as usual.

Friday at my daughter's my grandson was spraying the tom flowers then decided to get Nannie I soon got him back. Getting quicker chasing / hobbling after him. Then we blew bubbles the baby was in his high chair chuckling away having his best life.

Off to my brother and sister in law's tomorrow until Thursday. Can't wait to see all the changes they have made to the house. Been 2 years next month I left the Midlands. Apart from people don't miss anything about it. Here is my home and I love it.

Been picking strawberries, french beans and courgettes out of my garden. Can't believe I managed to grow them.

I fully expect to put on weight next week with my brother's cooking. He does low cal but uses more meat than I do. He took over the cooking when he retired early to be my sister in law's carer. Him retiring was the best thing for both of them as both have serious health problems. But like me just get on with things.

Have a great week pears. ?

fourormore Sun 18-Jul-21 10:49:20

Phew - scorching here too - I'm not complaining as I love the sunshine but it's way too hot to do any significant walking - I have lost nearly a pound though (minus 0.8lb) so I'm happy to be either staying the same or going downwards.
I'll be turning into a lettuce but I do love salads so I will keep going!
Good luck to all my fellow strugglers - remember a gain is a blip not the end! Keep right on to the end of the road! flowers

Shirleyw Sun 18-Jul-21 03:34:15

Morning……what a scorcher this weekend, been a long time coming. Have our eldest granddaughter here so we were out and about yesterday. …lost 2 and a quarter pounds this week…which included 2 ice creams and 2 home made choc cookies …so would of lost more if I hadn’t had those lol….still, very happy with that.
Hope you all had a good week. …
