On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course from the beginning are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits.

We now have some other excellent new regulars who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Please join us at this difficult time in all our lives with the Pandemic.

So Onward and Downward girls ??

Shirley funny. Whiff is what my husband called me. When he got home after dropping his briefcases in the porch he would shout hello Whiff and I would answer hello Hubs. Silly but having it as my username reminds me of him.

Tummy fine now. Only walked to the post box and couple of roads away this morning and then slept for 2.5 hours on the settee.

Pavers are still hard at it. At least the sun is out today. Paving slabs going down.

I envy your skill at making clothes. I have enough trouble sewing a straight line to put together my cushions and other things I make using my cross stitch. This is my latest one.

Just chilling out this weekend. As usual. If it's nice might finely try out my new Hotter walking boots.

Shirleyw Fri 12-Mar-21 02:55:08

Oh dear whif....your username very apt then ??...hope your better today.
My second jab is Easter Sunday.....I was lucky having first one earlier than my age group because I work in social care....
Glad the winds have died down a bit....our 6’ 6” bamboo shield came a away a bit ...DH put it up a month ago because of our new dog which could easily hop over a 5’ fence lol...nothing damaged though.
I’m off now till Tuesday....#excited, ordered 4 lots of material and that should arrive today, can’t wait to get started on projects at the weekend...if I can get it washed and ironed by Saturday I shall be happy...making two tunic tops and 2 dresses....ready for summer ...keep me occupied other than thinking about food ?

What are you guys up to .this weekend.

Whiff Thu 11-Mar-21 15:10:18

Thought I had got off lightly after AZ jab with sore arm . But had to be in the 1in 100 uncommon side effects abdominal pain. Only down side of living in a bungalow my pavers know how many times I've been to the loo.

At least they are outside. Always a silver lining. ?

Whiff Thu 11-Mar-21 13:51:21

The sun is shining and my pavers are hard at it. Heavy rain and very high winds through the night.

Spoke to my GP having a blood test on 22th. Out of 8 sites that was the first date I could get. The hospital walk in BT had to close because of Covid.. But will.open again one day. She is referring me to an urologist. They don't prescribed HRT for woman post menopause age. Unless hot flushes etc huge problem and I just cope with them. Next time I start UTI need to get sample to surgery before 12 so it can be sent off. Like me she is worried the amount of antibiotics I have had . I don't want to become antibiotics tolerant. Then they won't work.

Hope you are all ok. ❤️

Whiff Wed 10-Mar-21 13:02:39

Dorset it's nice you and your daughter are both on training paths. In a funny way Covid pandemic has done me some good. Made me use technology more and enjoy all the benefits from it. Found out I am a gardener not got a black thumb as my husband said. I have always enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. Bird song , beautiful sky etc. Doesn't take much to make me happy.

Had my jab this morning AZ. Arm a bit sore but that's all so far. Made me smile when I read the information leaflet it's manufactured not far from where I live. Low carbon footprint.

My pavers started on Monday and have worked like demons. They are hard at it in the rain. It will be lovely when finished.

Speaking to my GP in the morning about the UTIs and kidney infections. Hopefully get referred to an urologist.

Take care all ?

Dorsetcupcake61 Mon 08-Mar-21 17:39:07

Oh dear I've just lost a very long message?.
Anyway hi everyone!
I have another 3 weeks of training including this one Whiff. Its focuses on certain areas and shadowing then starting a caseload. Daughter survived first week. It's good we are on a similar path as can reassure her that even with my age and experience feeling a bit overwhelmed is normal!
Keep on keeping Cocopops. It's not letting it sneak back on that's vital.
I heard from my diabetic nurse today and was not surprised to find my blood sugars had risen. She was very lovely and very understanding, admitting even she had put weight on during lockdown. I did explain I felt quite annoyed that I am a stone heavier than this time last year. We are going to give it 3 months to see if can reduce sugar by curbing carbs. It's an extra level of motivation for me. I have food bought for this week which will fit into a healthier pattern but as of next Monday will be a committed low carb/calorie diet!
I hope the podiatrist helped anno. I have never been diagnosed officially with anything. One thing I did notice this time last year was that pains in my joints and the occasional eczema I get completely disappeared when on low carb/sugar diet. Obviously things then went bit haywire. For some reason I have a suspicion its wholewheat bread as if eat it regularly symptoms start to reappear!
Oh Shirleyw I sympathise with going to sleep ok but waking up in early hours. Have yet to find a cure so just make sure I'm in bed on workday by 9.30 so get as much sleep in before!
Have a great week everyone. Big hugs?

Whiff Mon 08-Mar-21 17:05:26

Anno hopefully one of those posh regal looking ones . ? Sorry you are having trouble with your foot. Hope the podiatrist could help you. Nothing worse than having problems with your feet. ?

annodomini Mon 08-Mar-21 10:00:14

We have been told by our practice that they will have to stick to the 11-12 week period between jabs, so it will be Easter for me. Somehow, it doesn't seem like seven weeks since the first. I am sitting on a plateau just now - either just below or just above 11st. I'm aware that I just don't get enough exercise, but when I walk, my arthritic left foot complains painfully. Today I am seeing a podiatrist, though not sure what she can do. Yesterday I ventured to walk around a garden centre.
I've come to the conclusion that I'm neither an apple nor a pear: I'm a pillar box, all my measurements are about the same!

Whiff Mon 08-Mar-21 09:41:52

Cocopops glad to hear you will get your vaccine next month.. And staying the same weight. Hope there will be a lot having the vaccine where you are. I suppose like us there are those who won't have it. But bet it's like people here they are willing to pay to have vaccines if they want to go on exotic holidays but won't have one that is free and can save lives.

Shirley excellent weight loss. Sorry your having disturb nights. I have been awake since 4.30 . Once I have had my sleep out can't get back to sleep. I was later going to bed last night it was 11. Usually go to bed between 9-10. Because I am awake early I get tired. Saturday morning had a 2 hour nap after breakfast. Decide years ago if I needed a nap I was having one and not feel guilty about it.

My pavers are starting today coming at 10.30. And it's raining. Wait and see if they come.

Have a good day everyone. ?

Shirleyw Mon 08-Mar-21 02:16:35

Morning all....oh my sleep hours are erratic....I don’t have trouble going to sleep, infact, once my head hits the pillow within 5 mins I’m asleep but I wake up in silly hours ? then drift in and out of sleep ....

Some great weight losses, well done. I lost 1 and a quarter pounds.

I have my 2 nd jab on Easter Sunday...I was lucky enough to have mine early due to working in social care. My d/h had his Friday, we are really cracking on with these vaccines as a country....it’s marvellous. I’m also looking forward to March 29th is it. When we can meet outdoors. My daughter and granddaughters....been far too long.

Keep well guys

CocoPops Sun 07-Mar-21 19:39:00

Good to know you are getting vaccinated and feeling a bit safer. We have just started an age related schedule here and I'll get the 1st vaccination next month. The plan is to extend the gap between Ist and 2nd shot to 4 months now so that there's sufficient vaccine to give more people some protection with the 1st dose. My friend who normally works on the cruise lines (no cruises this year of course) says she and her colleagues are being redeployed to help with the vaccination programme. Several programmes on the radio have been trying to address vaccine hesitancy. I am surprised by seemingly sensible people saying they do not want it.
Well done "losers" and hope pears with health problems get them resolved soon.
No change in my weight in spite of a few treats but I know I need to be careful otherwise it'll creep back on.

Whiff Sun 07-Mar-21 13:06:30

Four brilliant weight loss. Hopefully Will be paying me a visit soon. Spend an enjoyable 2 hours in the garden weeding. Green bin collection tomorrow. It's lovely seeing everything in bud.

When I have my jab on Wednesday it will be with a sense of relief. I know it won't give full protection but it's a start. Next one is on 31st May which is bank holiday.

Easter is early this year. Got my older grandson gardening tools and his brother 100 plastic balls and a bubble machine. I always ask my daughter what to get. It's easier to do that .

Dorset you gave me a chuckle hope your GP gets to the bottom of it all. Just a blip for you this week. Will this be your last training week? How is your daughter getting on with her new job?

Dorsetcupcake61 Sun 07-Mar-21 10:56:56

Very wise words Fourormore and well done???

Dorsetcupcake61 Sun 07-Mar-21 10:54:45

Well done Sarahmob, that's brilliant! That is so heartbreaking about that poor little girl. Let's all hope and pray the schools open for good tomorrow. I know my 5 year old grandson is very much looking forward to it. My youngest grandson has started nursery, he didnt seem over enthusiastic! It must be quite strange for him,hes only just 2 so pandemic is norm for him?.
Indeed the vaccination gave me an overwhelming sense of relief. Although I obviously need to follow precautions even maybe after the second one at least I feel I have a fighting chance!
I was just watching one of the Sunday moving political programmes and it was all about the summer music festivals and should they go ahead? My initial thought would be not a good idea. However if they didnt another 70 thousand jobs would be lost not to mention the money lost. I'm sure as in many areas it will be problematical, health versus economy and mental health. As Whiff says if everyone over 18 was vaccinated that may even up the odds. That may not happen. I find it more shocking the amount of NHS and social care staff that are refusing the vaccine.
As as high risk individual I feel in a better place than last year,I feel I have a better chance of not dying. I have a feeling that with new variants and everything opening up life will continue to be cautious for me long after 21st June.
I hope GP gets to the bottom of it all Whiff. GPs do vary .
I nearly didnt get on the scales this week. There have been a few treats(that have been very much enjoyed!). I was quite relieved when I saw the number on the scales and then when I got to my little book realised I had PUT ON a pound. So mixed feelings there ,I was expecting it to be much worse ?. Strangely a small gain makes me feel more motivated!
Well I had better get on and prepare the Easter box for my daughter, SIL and grandsons. I have put together some Easter activities and gifts. I will post on Wednesday when I have a diabetic eye test. I could do post office collect but I'm going into town anyway!
Indeed NanKate and Whiff we are a very special group??. Have a good week everyone ??

fourormore Sun 07-Mar-21 10:41:24

All these latest threads sum up so well the friendliness and support we all find on this thread - we owe you NanKate flowersflowersflowers

Over the past few months especially I have had several 'down' times and the weight has gone on but I was always encouraged and supported!

My friend 'Will' came back this week (Will Power!) and he, combined with a VERY strict regime, (not even looking at biscuits etc.) together with a short brisk walk around the block most days keeping away from potential carriers I have managed to make the drop after plateauing for so long.

I was delighted with 3.4lb loss this morning - I know it won't be like that every week as there is always a good jolt down once the brick wall collapses but it is a good start!

We will ALL get there in our own time, at our own pace -
When I had all the bereavements etc. and also accepted that I was not able to go swimming etc. I knew I wouldn't lose.

However, if we can accept our current situations - don't fret if we stay put or put on - we will all succeed when the time is right for us!

Good luck everyone - stay positive! flowersflowersflowers

Whiff Sun 07-Mar-21 09:33:54

Sarah brilliant weight lose. That's so sad about that little girl I hope with the school's going back she will get back to her normal self. Who would have thought Covid would cause so may problems in ways I didn't expect. And yet there are those idiots who don't believe it's real. My brother and sister in law are finely showing sights of improvement 4 weeks post isolation. They have their jabs on Thursday.

My weight has stayed the same. Speaking to my GP Thursday so hope I will get some help with these UTIs . Have a list of questions and though research narrowed it down to what I think are possible causes. But know I need a blood test and will push for one. What this space.

NanKate hope you are feeling better and have a plan to help with your diverticulitis.

As I have said before this thread is one of the nicest on Gransnet. We should coin a phrase if you say someone is a pear. It's means she is a loving, supportive ,caring and loyal friend. Which you all are to me.

NanKate Sun 07-Mar-21 07:38:23

Well done Sarahmob another 2lbs ?

I think it is important to occasionally treat ourselves eg fish and chips. It’s all about occasional not regular treats.

Over the last 2 years 10 months we have learned a lot from each other. Long may it last my lovely virtual friends ??????

Sarahmob Sun 07-Mar-21 07:28:55

Good Morning ladies,
I hope that the last week has been a good one for you all. Whiff I was so pleased that your test result was negative, getting your jab is a real life changer. I’ve found that whilst nothing has actually changed in the world, I’m still mask wearing, not going out (except for work, exercise and childcare) and washing my hands every five minutes it’s changed my head. I know that I’m better protected than I was should I catch the virus and eventually will feed into the herd immunity that’s developing. I even feel better about all the children returning to school tomorrow. At work on Friday, we had an early returner, quite a disadvantaged little girl who had problems prior to lockdown with speech and she has come back totally refusing to speak, she was isolated from her peers in play and spent hours silently rocking to and fro. It broke my heart! And if anything shows the need for children to be back in school it was that.

Dorset I hope that you are feeling better this week and that you soon get some answers regarding the infections. Good to have you back too NanKate.

Good news on the diet front - 2lbs down again this week. I was pleasantly surprised as my DH had taken me out for dinner on Friday. Our local farm shop/cafe do take away on a Friday evening and he’d ordered fish and chips for us both which we ate in the car park. Lovely!

Thanks to you all once again for being such a lovely group. It helps to have people to be accountable to and receive such excellent support from.

Have a good week ladies.

Whiff Thu 04-Mar-21 10:03:59

Thank you all for your good wishes. At least I will feel happy once I've had my 1st jab. I know it doesn't give the full protection and will carry on all the precautions I have been taking. But it's will be relieve to know it's my turn. Still think it should be complusory as this is not going away. It's here to stay like flu. And as with flu it mutants and we will need yearly vaccines against it as well as the flu jab. If only the idiots would wake up and behave themselves. Things wouldn't have got this bad. Over 100,00 dead in this country . Look how many families have lost loved ones some families more than one loved one. Those Covid disbelievers would soon be demanding treatment if they got it. Sounds harsh but they shouldn't get it. They are the ones helping the spread. Look at how they attacked the police when they went to break up a party. More than one policeman was injured . One was knocked unconscious. It's always the minority who spoil it for the majority. We should be like Israel you have no choice you have to have the jabs .

I know it's my main soap box topic. But look how many young people have died . They had their whole lives ahead of them. My brother and sister in law still haven't recovered from it. Some of you probably have either had it or family who has . If we want to get back to some sort of normal life the vaccine is the only way. I get off the box now.

NanKate glad it wasn't anything sinister. Diverticulitis is bad enough. I will ask my friend who suffers from it what foods she has had to cut out. I know she has to drink 2 ls of water a day to help with it.

Hope you all have a good day. ❤️

NanKate Thu 04-Mar-21 07:35:14

So pleased you got a negative result Whiff ?

NanKate Thu 04-Mar-21 07:34:23

Thanks folks yes seen the consultant who reassured me it was diverticulitis and nothing more sinister. Just need to get myself back to my daily walks and find out what I can and cannot eat now.

Dorsetcupcake61 Thu 04-Mar-21 06:45:44

I hope you are feeling more comfortable now NanKate ,at least you will be seeing the consultant soon?.
Brilliant news Whiff?. It's good you were able to book both as well.?.

Shirleyw Thu 04-Mar-21 03:11:57

That’s great whif....

fourormore Wed 03-Mar-21 20:16:18

Brilliant news Whiff Now get those jabs done!!!

Whiff Wed 03-Mar-21 18:55:33

Just had Covid results negative. So booked both my jabs. First one on Wednesday. ????
