On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course from the beginning are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits.

We now have some other excellent new regulars who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Please join us at this difficult time in all our lives with the Pandemic.

So Onward and Downward girls ??

Good evening ladies!
Lovely to hear from you Lisbeth, it sounds like you are off to a positive start which is brilliant! You are doing a brilliant volunteer job?. Coincidentally I got a text from my surgery yesterday inviting me to book for my first vaccination! It was a complete surprise as wasnt expecting it until maybe March. I was so excited. I was lucky to be able to book the same 9am appointment so I was back in time for my training! Who would believe a few seconds could be so life changing? As I sat there for the required 10 minutes I felt so thankful for those who had invented the vaccine. Looking around as it got busier it became obvious that they had moved on to group 6. I realised that my excitement was also relief,it genuinely felt as though I had been given a stay of execution! I know it's just the first step and still have to continue to mask/socially distance etc but I feel as though I have been given a fighting chance! I continued with my training which was good. We finished early and as I woke up very early I felt like a nap! It was a perfect nap?. 9n the occasions I have had an afternoon nap often wake up feeling groggy, but felt refreshed! I think it was the relief of "breathing out"! I had the ffeizer one, other than a slight tenderness to where injected feel fine!
I hope you are feeling better Whiff. ?. Its brilliant news that family feeling better and I hope they are well on the road to recovery ?.
I remember when my mum was on several courses of high strength antibiotics and how grim she felt, even when they changed type. I had similar problems with a problematical toe nail removal which took ages to heal. One thing the nurse recommended was prebiotics in the form of those little actimel drinks. They made a big difference to how mum felt, the same with me! I've started taking them for the past month as soon as knew 8 would be going into the office as they boost the immune system-every little helps at the moment. After reading the online labels some of flavours are fat/ sugar free too. I think I will continue for the foreseeable future even though working from home. They certainly helped in the past with the nausea and gastric side affects of antibiotics.
Not sure how the weigh in will go this week. Interestingly I have a much delayed blood test to check blood sugar levels on Friday, it's nearly a year overdue! A lovely member of a diabetic forum I'm on had his results this week and they had shot up. He was devastated. He has had a stressful time with work and family and covid, unbelievably stressful-like many he went back to comfort foods even though it was the opposite of what he needed to do. Like here we've encouraged him to be gentle with himself and take baby steps to move forward. I think this latest lockdown has hit people much harder than the first-time been a very long month or so!
Keep on taking those steps in the right direction everyone, however small they may be?

Lizbethann55 Fri 12-Feb-21 17:12:46

Hello again. Thank you for your welcome messages. I have spent the week trying to cut down on snacking. My meals don't tend to be too bad, but I am a grazer between meals. Today I have received a soup maker from Amazon. I make soup quite a lot and I think this will be even easier. Also I hope my DH will learn to use it. I work two days a week (currently at a vaccination centre) 8.00 til 2.00 so it will be lovely to get in to some ready made soup. My next purchase will be some decent bathroom scales. The ones I am using were my mum's and are absolutely ancient. Added to which I struggle to see the numbers on them. I will try to keep you up to date with my progress and hope to get to know you, even if it is virtually, over the next weeks. Thanks again to you all. Xxx

Whiff Fri 12-Feb-21 06:09:39

Shirleyw thank you. I had my first antibiotic last night. Hopefully by tonight will feel bit better.

The boiler saga continues last evening it made the noise again at 6. Phoned engineer like he asked . But he was home so he listen to the noise said switch it and them switch it on again. No noise. And worked perfectly. Normally I would have it on now but wouldn't switch it on until nearer 8 in case it makes the noise. As he wants me to phone him if it does. So wrapped up in bed at the moment. Get up at 7. Nice and warm in bed.

My daughter made me laugh she asked if my kidneys and boiler where linked. Think both are trying to drive me mad.

Had a what's app call with the friend I made at the U3A. We normally just chat on phone or text. She's 64 having her 1st vaccine next week. So maybe not long before I get mine. Used to love our met ups . She's a talented water colour artist. Showed me a lovely winter scene painting she did of Yorkshire where she comes from.

Well keep warm everyone as it's going to be another cold one. Mind you just read parts of Dartmoor are on ?. No danger to people or animals. Our crazy British weather.

Shirleyw Thu 11-Feb-21 19:04:56

Hope you rapidly improve whiff, I have those occasionally , not nice... i try and keep my water intake up...i go to peoples homes and i dont like using their toilets so i used to not drink much on the day i went there hence i picked up infections..
Thats good your brother and sister in law are on the mend. You can relax a bit now whiff....
Its been bitterly cold in Bedfordshire. Im glad I finished work today and dont go back till Tuesday.
Have a good weekend guys and stay safe....and warm....Spring will be here soon.

Whiff Thu 11-Feb-21 16:45:28

Wish my body would behave itself. Sorry going to have a moan. Got another kidney infection. Spoke to the Dr trying me with a different antibiotic that won't upset my tummy. At least the pain isn't as bad as last time. Just waiting for them to be delivered. Wish I had some ice cream and chocolate. Good job I don't buy it.

Had some good news my brother and sister in law are slowly getting better. They fancied a bacon sandwich for breakfast and could taste it. My sister in law could smell the citrus cleaner my brother used and she has a bit more energy. They both have tight chests but not as bad as it was. I have been worried about them.

Hope everyone is well and keeping warm. ?

Whiff Mon 08-Feb-21 07:56:31

Shirleyw fantastic weight lose you should feel justly proud of yourself. I could use your mojo as mind is hit and miss at the moment.

Thank you Dorset I will text them this afternoon to check up on them. Just hope it doesn't send my sister in law into a MS episode.

Very light dusting of snow on the lawn and boarders none on roofs or pavements.

Keep warm everyone.

Dorsetcupcake61 Mon 08-Feb-21 07:28:31

Morning all?. I do hope your brother and sister in law are on the road to recovery Whiff. It certainly seems at the moment that there is a greater personal knowledge of people becoming unwell, certainly the case by me which has gone from having lowest rates in country to being in top 20 highest.?.
It did sound as though you had a lovely day with your grandson though?. I hope you continue to feel better ?.
Well done Sarahmob. That stone mark always feels a bit of a trial but worth it when past it!
I must admit Sisteract I'm not the best at fluid intake. I'm good first thing then it tapers off! I think most days I just scrape the minimum, must do better!
Much to my youngest daughters disappointment Fourormore we still have no snow and be surprised if we do. Very chilly though.
Ah if only the excess skin sprang back as quickly as in my youth! I agree it's so frustrating when celebrities deny the help they have from plastic surgery whether face or body. There are a few people who genetically are lithe and wrinkle free, but not many. I read an article in the Guardian at weekend about how influencers may be made to declare what filters they use on photos. I feel quite lucky to be part of a generation that didnt grow up with such pressure. !
Well I have had a lovely weekend pottering. Breakfast and then time to set laptop up. Let's hope for well behaved technology?.
Keep on keeping on everyone. I think it's often such a bumpy road where good intentions are often met by trials and tribulations.on good days the motivation and methods come together. It's hard at the moment, its cold and everyone is stressed to some degree. I do think every little helps though whether it's a bit of extra movement or only having one biscuit instead of two. I'm bearing in mind Spring is around the corner and wont be able to hide under baggy jumpers!
Stay well and safe dear pears?

Shirleyw Mon 08-Feb-21 06:54:05

Hi all on this cold and snowy morning. Think the heating will be on all day.....bills will be sky high lol.......
well done on the losses
Lost 2lbs this week and Im now a healthy weight so it says on nhs better health....the top end so i shall hope to carry on to lose a bit more'

I'm 5'8" , I was 15.4 now 11.9....

Hope you all have a good week

Whiff Mon 08-Feb-21 05:35:14

Cocopops well done with the loss. Unfortunately there is no magic formula that will make the flab disappear. Especially after having children. I look at myself and think if I was in a wind tunnel with my flabby thighs and bingo wings I would take off. When I take my bra off at night I have to laugh I can image the comments my husband would make. But for all the flabby bits I am happy I lost the weight.

That is what annoys me about these women in the public eye who make out after decades of being fat and they lose 4+ stones their skin magical becomes all flat and taught. When the only way that happens is with surgery to remove the excess skin. That's what I admire about Lisa Riley she was honest about have surgery also about the pain and problems healing. Especially her legs. Also about the cost and time it takes for the swelling to go down. Hear ended my rant.

Thank you Cocopops and SisterAct for your good wishes. My brother has heart and lung problems and my sister in law MS. Luckily her son who lives with them is fine so far.

My friends nephew is 44 and was seriously ill in hospital with Covid but was sent home. Unfortunately he has started to cough up blood but he is home and his GP is monitoring him. Heard yesterday he had a bit to eat which is an improvement.

Stay safe everyone.

CocoPops Mon 08-Feb-21 01:22:52

Dear Whiff I am thinking of you.
Hello and welcome Lizbeth
Well done losers.
My weight is 128.2lbs today, a loss of one pound. My BMI is good but I wish the flab on the old tum and inner thighs would magically disappear!

SisterAct Sun 07-Feb-21 20:24:39

Love and prayers Whiff

Whiff Sun 07-Feb-21 15:28:48

Just spoke to my brother. They are both in a bad way. Neither can taste or smell and feel as if they are covered in bruises but not a mark on their bodies. Hope it doesn't get any worse. Stay safe everyone.

Whiff Sun 07-Feb-21 12:23:20

Well done on the losses Dorset,Sarah and Four. SisterAct staying the same is an achievement. Don't be hard on yourself.

My weight has stayed the same. Think my upset tummy counteracted my over eating. Because my tummy was so raw I eat more to try and easy the pain. Glad to say feeling better today only a couple more days of antibiotics. Never want a kidney infection again. I didn't do any cross stitch until Thursday. My daughter said I must have been ill. From Sunday all I wanted to do was lie on the settee which isn't me.

Had my grandson for 5 hours yesterday. We made chocolate chip cookies for him to take home. He helped me prepare our lunch. Because I said nannie was poorly and couldn't play our usual games . He played by himself and sang to me. He's 3. We played some games but not the usual chasing eachother round.

The new house is lovely. Had cuddles with the baby and fed him. My son in law had cleaned the carpets upstairs they were damp so only saw the downstairs. See the rest another day. My grandson showed me round he was like an estate agent pointing everything out to me.

Cold here but no snow. Don't normally get much snow up here to windy.

Had some worrying news this morning my brother and sister in law tested positive for Covid. Both have health problems. Just hope they don't have a severe case.

Have a good week everyone ?

fourormore Sun 07-Feb-21 10:53:40

Morning everyone! After a really strict week with myself I have managed to rid myself of 1.2lbs which is a start.
I had a bad couple of dodgy weeks when I did stray so I only have myself to blame!
Being shut in I made myself an 'indoor' exercise regime which was quite heavy going. My plan was to combat the world of weightloss! No such luck I didn't follow it (!) so not worth the paper I had printed it on grin I've made an easier one now which should be followable!
I have been really strict this week, so I am happy with the result - just need to keep it up now. hmm
I too would like to send a huge welcome to our newbies -
it's great to have new friends and fellow strugglers because that is what we are - strugglers but first and foremost friends
Stick with us and you will receive loads and loads of encouragement!
Have you seen the snow in Shaftsbury Dorset??? Think we're really lucky being that tiny bit further south!
Have a good week everyone - don't give up!!! flowersflowersflowers

SisterAct Sun 07-Feb-21 09:33:23

Hi welcome Lizbeth. I have only been on a few weeks and been made really welcome.

Glad things improving for you all Whiff. You are inspiring to me.

If I’m completely honest I’m gutted re my weight this week staying the same again ? I’ve had no snacks so it must be portion size and perhaps carbs. I don’t know wether to start counting calories or do a couple of weeks low/no carbs
NanKate I might start the NHS app

I started new medication Tuesday and ?no side effects. I know if I loose weight this will help. I just need to stick with it. Sorry for the moan.

Well done Sara and good to know your tests negative. We have no snow either. I’m knitting a Humpty Dumpty jumper for my Grandaughter. Doing age 1-2 looks like it might be a dress for her !!!

I’ll keep busy Dorset up my walking and drink more ! Mean water, tea, coffee ??? honestly

Have a good week and I may pop in during the week.

NanKate Sun 07-Feb-21 08:52:32

Hi girls.

Whiff you are not overstepping the mark at all, I’m just grateful to any of our group for being welcoming the newbies.

I’m no more important than anyone on this thread. We are a great team ?

Sarahmob Sun 07-Feb-21 08:17:42

Good morning all, and a welcome to you Lizbethann, I joined this thread nearly 6 months ago now and have received nothing but friendly encouragement.
Weigh in day for me today - 1 and 1/2 lbs down this week, and I’ll take that as a decent loss. I’m getting close to changing my ‘stone number’ and find that to be a real incentive to stick at it and ignore the chocolate fingers that are in the pantry (they were a Christmas gift that I’ve managed to ignore).
I’m so pleased to hear that you’re feeling better Whiff, and that the COVID test was negative. It was good that the move went smoothly too, not an easy thing to do when you’ve got such a young baby.
Dorset, I’m pleased that training is going well, and well done on your loss. Being busy certainly helps with eating control, I find not having time to ‘think’ about food is good for me.
I’m now self testing twice a week for COVID - I think the govt diverted all those tests they’d bought in for secondary schools to all teachers instead. It’s a bit of a palaver and not pleasant, but it’s good to know that I’m clear twice a week at least, and helps me to feel more secure about doing my grandsons childcare on Mondays/Tuesdays.
We’ve had no snow here, although it is cold - I had to take my car to the tyre fitters yesterday to have a slow puncture sorted and now they don’t allow you to wait in the building so had a very cold trudge around our town whilst it was being sorted.
I plan to stay in the warm today and finish knitting a matinee jacket for my friends daughter.

Have a good week pears ?

Dorsetcupcake61 Sun 07-Feb-21 07:50:08

Good morning ladies ?. Well it's very chilly here but no sign of snow. The BBC weather site promised light snow over several days but that has changed to just cloudy. We rarely get snow here so get quite excited, then very fed up as everything grinds to a halt?. Still it's nice to look at when you are sitting indoors and have nowhere to go!
Much to my surprise I have lost 1 and 3/4 lbs!
Looking back over the week I have been quite sensible I suppose. Breakfast was a slice of toast with marmite. Lunch soup. Morning and afternoon I would have a biscuit. I kept my evening meal simple a bought ready meal on a few occasions or one of my own from the freezer. Yoghurt for pudding.
Mentally I was quite tired so I was in bed by 9pm. I did notice on Friday I stayed up much later and had an attack of the munchies. I remember someone who had maintained weight loss once saying about the evening munchies check you are not just tired or thirsty!
It definitely seems to be the case with me last Friday.
So I'm prepared for this week. My online shop has healthy snacks. I've made ready meals for the freezer and bought a few in case I fancy something different. I'm not a massive fan of ready meals but sometimes they have a place. Last week I tried an individual portion of Aunt Bessies vegetarian toad in the hole. It was lovely,I couldnt make better myself! It's one of the few dishes that is a real hassle to make for one. On the other hand the following day I tried a Kirstys lentil shepherds pie. Not pleasant at all so threw away most of it,which probably balanced the calories of the toad in the hole!
I have certainly baked less, well not at all! Home baking is so much nicer. I never buy bought cakes. Biscuits im ok with and one malted milk is fine. Home made biscuits are simply to nice?.
The one exception is Whiffs cake above which I made when she first kindly gave us the recipe. Its absolutely lovely and so much healthier! I'm going to hopefully make a version today, maybe apricot and cranberry as have those to use up. A slice will be nice during afternoon when training!
Good luck fellow pears! Whether up down or the same have a lovely week and keep safe?

Dorsetcupcake61 Fri 05-Feb-21 17:47:08

Hi Whiff that is such brilliant news about the test and feeling better??. Glad the move went smoothly. Training for job going well, like most things there seems a mountain of stuff to learn but I'm really enjoying it! My surface pro is tidied away,I will set it up on Sunday. Chores done ready for a weekend of crafting!
Welcome Lisbeth?. I completely understand how you feel as I'm in a similar position. I dread to think what the scales will show next week! On the positive side I removed the ice cream cones from my online order, I did leave the liquorice all sorts though?. Stay safe ladies?

Whiff Fri 05-Feb-21 16:36:48

NanKate I hope you don't think I am over stepping the mark. It's just I read the thread and saw Lizbethann55 's post and her saying "I am mortally ashamed ", made me want to write to her. As I thought it was a sad thing to say about yourself. And I know how much you and everyone has helped me in a lot of ways.

My daughter and family are in there new home. They got the keys lunchtime.

Made my mom's tea bread but used dried prunes. I love dried prunes.

NanKate Fri 05-Feb-21 14:31:47

Lizbeth you are more than welcome here. Let us know your plan for losing weight and becoming healthier. You will find lots of advice on this thread. As my 9 year old grandson said ‘when I have finished these sweets I am going to eat healthily’ ?

Thanks Whiff for being our permanent Welcomer here, a very important role. I do hope you are feeling better, keep us posted.

Whiff Fri 05-Feb-21 09:44:45

Lizbethann55 first off be kind to yourself. Took me a lot of decades to do that. You are amongst friends here . I am so glad I found it . No one here is unkind to eachother. There was one but NanKate sorted her out.

I realised it's a marathon not a sprint. I am happy if I lose quarter of pound a week. At the moment my weight has slowly gone up a bit or some weeks stayed the same. But this is my 4th year of the new me. You have to find a way to lose weight that is right for you. We are all different. I count calories. Weight and measure everything. Even when I have a bad day still weight and count calories of how much I have gone over. I have to weight myself everyday but only take what I weigh on a Sunday in the nude.

I was a size 32 now 16. I had to stop buying foods which I can not control. Chocolate, ice cream ,cheese and biscuits. I used to always have 5, sorts of cheese in and live on my own.

I eat at lot more veg and fruit. I have my whatever soup for lunch everyday. I make it from red lentils plus whatever veg I have fresh or frozen. Porridge for breakfast made with coconut milk. Dinner is a stew which lasts 6 times. I alternate between meat and Quorn.

Everyone has a different way that works for them. I exercise usually daily but have lapse the last couple of weeks due to ill health. But must get back to it. I do them sitting down or holding onto the back of a chair. I am not ancient only 62 but have neurological problems which effects my balance.

The support I have here not just with weight but everyday life has made me happy. And I think happiness is under rated. If you have read the thread you see we talk about various things. And on that note.

Had my Covid results this morning at 5am they were negative so put in the code and out of isolation.

Yesterday didn't have any kidney pain and didn't just want to lie down all day and feel miserable. I am used to pain as been in it for 33 years. But this pain was on another level. Never want a kidney infection again.

My daughter and family where out of isolation Tuesday midnight and last 2 days has brought over a car load to store here . Today is moving day for them. I asked if they needed washing doing. My youngest grandson is growing out of 0-3 month clothes and she kept his brothers baby clothes and they are here. So got the first load of 3-6 month clothes drying and another load on. He was 10 weeks old on Monday.

Dorset hope you are enjoying the job and getting the hang of it.

Thank you all for your good wishes.
Have a good day pears ?

Lizbethann55 Thu 04-Feb-21 20:25:07

Can I join please? I had got down to a size 16 pre Covid and have , I am mortally ashamed to say, put it all back on plus more. I feel fat and lazy and disgusting. I did join SW but didn't really like it, but I do know that the fact that there are other people in the same boat helps.

Dorsetcupcake61 Tue 02-Feb-21 07:49:10

Good morning all, well I'm all ready for work, and no I'm not in my pyjamas(casual leggings and jumper!).
Whiff,it was lovely to not have to negotiate a one way system to go to the loo!
The morning did have a stressful start as my wifi disappeared?. It wasnt a local thing but after a call to my supplier was resolved, still not sure how! Amazingly I made the course on time.! Its just as well I'm the sort of person who doesn't like to leave things until the last minute. Its 7.30 and laptop set up and?.
It's amazing how quickly you adapt to virtual training. It really was very good.
Having done the first day in office the only difficulty was the difference between operating on a tower computer and a laptop. Very subtle differences such as how Apps work and how you switch between windows. It took a few hours to get the hang of it so hopefully all be good today. The trainers are really lovely, very supportive.
The day passed very quickly. I'm very happy to WFH for this part of training as dont need to be in office for it. Hopefully by early March will have had vaccine and be safer to be out and about!
I must admit last night I was in bed by 8.30 as felt my eyes start to close ,woke up a few times as always do,but very brief and roused by alarm at 7am! It must be all that brain activity! Have a lovely week everyone ?

SisterAct Mon 01-Feb-21 20:13:45

Coco pops thank you for the info re statins, I will have a look.

Hope you feel better soon Whiff.

Thank you all for making me feel so welcome have a good week
