On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

However the 2 Gransnetters who have stayed the course from the beginning are Fourormore and Shirleyw who have helped to keep me on the straight and narrow, most of the time ?, and kept up our spirits.

We now have some other excellent new regulars who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.
Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my mantra.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Please join us at this difficult time in all our lives with the Pandemic.

So Onward and Downward girls ??

Well done to you to Shirley and fourormore. We’re already tier 3 so no place else to go unless they lockdown again. Our rates are falling - a fortnight ago we were number 3 on the worst list but today we’re not on the list at all. I just wish (as a teacher) that they’d shut the schools to all but key workers children again. We have bubbles ‘popping’ all the time.

Shirleyw Mon 14-Dec-20 01:36:30

Honestly, 1.30am and wide awake so just got a cuppa and popped on scales ?....2lb down ...well done sarah on your 2 lb loss also...and yours fourormore....I need to up my fitness though, I'm always on the go but need to do core work to tighten up that waist....

I've a feeling we will be going up a tier too....is it Thursday when we find out?

fourormore Sun 13-Dec-20 20:48:02

Good decisions Whiff - we're doing the same with our family. It will be hard but a small sacrifice now can be celebrated later.
Spoke to the same friend today and she has been feeling off colour today. Not Covid symptoms so hopefully she will be ok for the jab on Thursday. Obviously I would hate for her not be able able to have it but it would be ironic hmm if she has a temp or something that meant she couldn't have it that day?
I just cannot comprehend why anyone would take the risks especially when they know they are on the extremely vulnerable list hmm

Whiff Sun 13-Dec-20 16:41:58

Fourormore well done at the loss. I talked to my brother he was hoping if they changed tier they could visit. But told him it's not worth. Even if they go to tier 2 same as me we are not supposed to met indoors. It would be a drive of 100 miles. We both have work planned on our homes in February so said hopefully with the vaccinations it will be safer to visit Easter. He has heart problems and my sister in law has MS.

They have been taking all the precautions same as me. He has 3 children but wouldn't see them at Christmas they are bubbled with his father in law. At least there is what's app face to face chats.

Your friend is playing russian roulette. Even with the jab you still need to take precautions. Some people have no common sense .

fourormore Sun 13-Dec-20 10:38:34

Well done all of us as we persevere against very difficult times when it's so tempting to spoil ourselves a bit!
The blip I had last week has gone thank goodness - this week I have lost 1.6lb but most of that was last week's blip so I'm not that good hmm
Good luck everyone for another week - Like you Whiff I fear cases will rise following the 'free for all' over Christmas. Sadly it looks like our relations, that we really want to visit, will be moving up a tier after the review this coming week. People are not using common sense - an 85yr old friend of mine has regularly taken a bus into town, met her friend for 'coffee' and often then the pair of them have gone on another bus for a little ride!
She was excited a few days ago as the surgery phoned with a Covid jab appointment for her this week as she's in the extremely vulnerable group. Why doesn't it dawn!!! sad

Whiff Sun 13-Dec-20 08:35:25

Sarah brilliant weight loss. A lot of people will be glad of all those parcels. It's hard for some families at Christmas normally but this year there are more in need than ever. At least the people you are helping will have a happy one.

Here's hoping with the vaccine by Easter life will improve. For most of the world.

Just hope people still take all the precautions. In a way hope they don't alter the tiers as the number of cases will rise and to many people will carry on abusing the system. They should read some of the Coronavirus threads. It's horrifying what some are going through. So far no one in my family have got it but someone will eventually. It's a terrifying thought.

I’ve read several of JoJo Moyes books NanKate, she can tell a good story. I’ve been reading Lucinda Riley’s Seven sisters series, they’re excellent.

NanKate Sun 13-Dec-20 08:22:20

Brilliant Sarah 2 lbs and just before Xmas too, which is an excellent time to get ready for the festive season.

I love reading too, recently discovered Jojo Moyles. ??

Sarahmob Sun 13-Dec-20 08:06:11

Good morning all, pleased to report another 2lb loss this week. All that running around after my grandson last weekend must have had a good effect.
It’s great to hear that there are lots of readers amongst you, I’m an avid reader although I tend to read on my kindle or iPad these days. I’m reading a book at the moment as it was too expensive on kindle and I was able to get it from the local library. I love that I can read in bed and not disturb my DH when I’m reading as I’m finding sleep a bit elusive some nights at the moment.
I’ve got a busy week this week - I organise the Christmas food relief and toy parcels at my church and have food for 300 hampers waiting to be packed and delivered along with toys for over 400 children. Maybe when that’s successfully completed the sleep will return. I will finish work on Thursday too after the department of education asked us to put in a training day on Friday ( as I’m a supply teacher I don’t do inset days).
Hope you all have a good week and that the scales go the way you want them to. ?

Whiff Sun 13-Dec-20 07:26:53

Morning pears. Glad to report a lose this week quarter of a pound but that's fine by me. Keep it up next week and hopefully a pound. Did my exercises for longer each day. Seems to be working.

Got my grandson this morning. We will be making scones for him to take home. No temptation for nannies. Then nannies workout ! I mean playtime.

Have a good week everyone.

Dorsetcupcake61 Sat 12-Dec-20 13:13:03

I know what you mean Whiff. A dear friend used to wrap presents so beautifully they it was like a present in itself! However hard I try it always looks like an impatient 5 year old did it?.
I'm sorry about your son and daughter in law. I know it's not the same but I became estranged from a long standing friend four years ago. It was painful at the time, very much so. Fortunately now they are a passing thought every now and then. People can be very strange, but then they can also be very lovely like your new neighbours. All we can do is focus on good?.
Hmm scales. I will cautiously step on scales on Monday. I seemed to have gone between being very occupied with crafts and almost being to busy to stop to REALLY indulging in my sweet tooth. Very silly of me!

Whiff Sat 12-Dec-20 11:30:33

Dorset my wrapping is terrible but if it was perfect it won't be me.

Must tell you all what my neighbour from 2 doors away has done. He brought me a card and an indoor rose plant to wish me Christmas cheer as they didn't know if I would be on my own this year. I moved here August last year. Loved the bungalow and area. But didn't know what the neighbours would be like. I needn't have worried they are lovely including my neighbour the back of me. Since moving everyone I have met up here has been lovely. So friendly and helpful.

Pity my son and daughter in law have treated me so awfully. But don't hate them for what they have done. I have no room or want hate in my life. I have lot of family and friends who love and care for me. Plus all you pears.

Here's hoping the scales show some movement tomorrow.

Stay safe everyone.

Dorsetcupcake61 Sat 12-Dec-20 08:47:03

Ah Caramac Whiff?. I remember spending my pocket money on Enid Blytons Adventure series. To this day I find one of the greatest pleasures is finding an author you love and realising there are lots of books to look forward to!
Well done on the Chutney! I have often looked for recipes for food gifts but never actually made. Just remembered that hand scrubs were something that looked a good idea! Maybe next year.! This year I seem to have done a lot of knitted things for family. I've also discovered diamond art which very absorbing and so will be making a few book marks! Last year I did do a popcorn gift. I bought cheap pretty jars which I filled with pop corn kernels and then made popcorn seasoning which put in spice sized jars. It was quick to do,and quite cheap.
Wrapping! If it's not in a box I find one?

Whiff Tue 08-Dec-20 13:58:24

My parents took us to the post office every Saturday to get a 6d book and a chocolate bar. My brother and me always had a caramac , mom bounty and dad a mars bar. That's were my love of reading came from.

Made 12lbs of spicy tomato chutney this morning. Be ready in 4 weeks to eat. While it was cooking started to wrap some presents. Love choosing and buying them but am an awful wrapper.

Dorsetcupcake61 Mon 07-Dec-20 17:52:07

I agree Whiff, I love the look, feel and smell of books. I think a particular joy is sharing a book as well. The kindle app on my phone has come in handy when travelling as only have one real book with me if flying. I also use it to read in bed! I do love being surrounded by books and on the occasions I've been in houses with no books at all I find it quite odd!

Whiff Mon 07-Dec-20 16:16:07

Dorset I have a Kindle with some books on but to be honest love the feel of a book in my hands. And like seeing them on my book shelf.

Dorsetcupcake61 Mon 07-Dec-20 14:13:21

Glad the move happened Cocopops ?,well done on the loss too! Ah,Shirleyw and Beechnut Baileys and Christmas treats. I'm not a big drinker, but I do like the Baileys type liqueurs. M&S also did a gingerbread one?. I suppose it's fine if you stick to a teeny tiny liqueur glass but the levels of sugar is pretty horrific. As a diabetic that was the reason I stopped drinking it. I must admit I am trying to be really sensible this year. I think most of us can go a bit OTT at Christmas and by December 29th are yearning beans on toast! As it will just be me this year I really feel I must strike a balance. I dont want to sit here and only have an oatcake as a treat but a family tub of Quality Street isnt a good idea either!
Indeed Whiff ,my eldest daughter left a lot of her University things here which a decade later, with her knowledge were donated etc. Books are my weakness. What I tend to do now is get one off fiction on my kindle, special books are bought!

Beechnut Mon 07-Dec-20 07:47:43

Hello everyone. I can see that you’re making an effort to lose before Christmas and hope I can too. I bought treats when the Christmas food started to be displayed but the last two weeks have told myself when shopping NO just look at the treats DON’T put them in the trolley.

Well done to the losers and those trying their best.

Whiff Mon 07-Dec-20 06:01:27

Well done to Dorset, Cocopops and Shirleyw on your loses. Fourormore more it's a blip. You have a lot to worry about at the moment.

Dorset after my children left home they took everything they wanted but left some thinks. Luckily nothing food wish. I didn't get rid of any of their things until I put my house on the market. When I asked them if they wanted their things they were surprised I had held on to them. Neither wanted anything so all of it went to the charity shop. One good thing about moving house was it made me get rid of all the things I was holding onto that I didn't need. As I downsized I found I love my pared down life style. I had over 600 books. I love reading got rid of a lot that I won't read again. But I counted how many I kept a few months ago when I sorted them out into boxes by author .372. Filled my bookcase and when I have read all them. Replace them with ones out of the boxes.

Cocopops I am glad your son is in his new home. Property buying in this country takes for ever. At least he can get it the way he wants it. As anyone owning their own property it is a life long commitment and you can always find things to do. Luckily since moving here August last year had a lot of work done. Next year only the living room and hall need decorating. And some paving done in the garden. Then it's done. Garden is a work in progress.

Shirleyw luckily I don't drink due to tablets. So I am not tempted by the wide choice of alcohol. Before I got ill loved a glass of St Emilon a dark red wine yum.

Have a good week everyone.

Shirleyw Mon 07-Dec-20 03:26:05

That is good sarah, well done, and hope you enjoyed your lovely walks on the beach...can't beat the sea air. Well done on the 1lb loss cocoa & *dorset. *whif maintain is also good.

I lost 2 lbs this week. I'm determined to last till Christmas Eve but it's getting increasingly difficult when I go round m&s food hall ?. I won't buy it but I spotted 'trifle' liqueur and a salted caramel brownie liqueur....similar to baileys....I love a baileys at Christmas and fancied the brownie one for a change. ..sickly I know...then thought to myself....no....not having any of those for a Christmas tipple this year, shall stick to the wine.....the calories in those must be a ridiculous amount ....

Have a good week guys....

CocoPops Mon 07-Dec-20 00:09:38

Glad to know you are feeling better*Whiff*and well done Sarah and Dorset.
I weighed in at 129lbs today, a loss of a pound.
After a worrying time over house buying my son moved in to his new home on Thursday. What a relief! He'soverjoyed to have a home of his own after years of renting. smile The new oven doesn't work so fingers crossed that'll soon be fixed! Wood floor being fitted to the ground floor this week and carpets and furniture to choose. A lovely project.

Dorsetcupcake61 Sun 06-Dec-20 13:52:12

Good afternoon all?. Well done Sarah mob,I hope you had a lovely walk on the beach.
Fourormore I'm glad your relative is rallying. Keep on keeping on. During stressful times I think all we can do is try and be as sensible as we can and not get to despondent. I know over the past month or so my weight has been up and down like a yoyo, as has my motivation !
I'm glad your sciatica is improving Whiff?. Cold and sunny here!
Well I lost a pound which quite surprised by as I'm not following a strict regime of any kind. I think it has helped that I have resisted the temptation to add any treats to online order. I tell myself if I have desperate urge for a biscuit I have the ingredients to bake them, and so far I havent bothered?..I suppose I'm being firmer in acknowledging my weaknesses, I know that if I order more than an individual treat I wont ration them out sensibly, and of course the opportunity to impulse buy is zilch!
That said I did find unexpected temptation today. The radiator in my back bedroom is leaking. British Gas are coming out. Unfortunately the bedroom is full of my daughters belongings from when my daughter moved out of her flat! They were pretty good and leaving space to get to what I needed but I wanted to make a clear space for engineer.
There were a few bags of non perishable that my daughter said I was welcome to have. I fully appreciate her decision and feel it was the right one but it was quite sad to go through items that were a reminder of a couple lives together. It's probably me just being sensitive, who else would get a bit emotional over a years supply of tinned goods??
There were some interesting things though. Unicorn syrup anyone? Lots of sauces and baking ingredients. Jams etc. There were also two cartons of weight watchers brownie mix which I didnt even know they did,but might be interesting!
What did I find tucked in another box? 2 jars of sweets and a carrier bag full of mini packs of Maryland cookies?. I was for a moment bewildered by my daughters secret stash when remembered they would have been for when she started a cupcake business! Fortunately her tastes in sweets have always been very different to mine,so other than a small bag of dolly mixtures I'm not bothered. The cookies may take a bit of will power!
Have a great week everyone ?

Whiff Sun 06-Dec-20 10:38:53

Well done at the loss Sarahmob. My weight has stayed the same. But have been doing my exercises all week managed to do stand up ones as my sciatica is feeling better. Managed to sleep on my side last night. We had a frost this morning. My daughter lives 10mins away they didn't have it. Have a good week everyone.

fourormore Sun 06-Dec-20 10:36:19

Been careless this week as need to instil into my brain that I have to accept not being able to go out to exercise. The sad result is a gain of a pound.
I cannot fret over it but just resolve to try harder this coming week as I know I did slip up this week and give in to temptation! blushblushblush
Thankfully our sick relation seems to have rallied yet again which is wonderful, but he remains very weak and certainly plays havoc with our emotions!!! I don't think I have ever been on such a huge rollercoaster and it's worse for the family that are with him. I am telling myself to get my '****' in gear - tomorrow starts another week! grin

NanKate Sun 06-Dec-20 07:43:19

Well done Sarah incorporating exercise in your weight loss plan is excellent.

I realise though that not everyone can do this, but chair exercises are available too.

So let’s get moving, me included. ?‍♀️
