3 years 7 months ago on 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our new mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

So Onward and Downward Pears ??

Morning All...So I have been testing out My Fitness Pal and I promised to report back.

I find it easy to log my food and calories each day. You can search for bought brand named items on the data base and up they come with accurate calories recorded, which is useful.

For home made things I have been putting in the items and amounts used and working out and adding calories and then saving it as a meal to use next time I eat the same thing. It takes time the first time but makes it really easy after that to just add the meal to your food diary, which includes the calories.

Overall I am finding it quite useful but it's early days so I'll report back again after a couple of weeks. I am only on the free part of the app and I don't plan to pay to upgrade, so not sure what difference that would make.

Anyway so far I'd say it is worth trying out if you are calorie counting

Whiff glad it was no infection. Well done for losing ladies! Half a pound for me!

fourormore Tue 18-Jan-22 10:32:01

Thanks for your update about My Fitness Pal Madgran
Did you have the scary privacy notices that I had? Perhaps it was because I was an existing partaker?
I am no tech-ace and things like that, that most people ignore concern me! Scaredy-cat that I am!

Madgran77 Tue 18-Jan-22 16:14:08

No didn't see anything scary. I agreed to share any food details that I uploaded but that's all. , ie if I put baked beans and tge calories and portion size on database I agreed that other users could see it and load it for the food re order if they wanted to

Bought a packet of cashews with the intention of using them in a stir fry, but before I made it I had eaten the lot. I can’t be trusted with them, so stir fry’s in future will be nutlets. I had done so well, apart from my Sunday day off. Starting fresh again, just one blip.

fourormore Wed 19-Jan-22 09:31:08

Allsorts I'm glad 'Sinday' went well for you - one blip is nothing and if you have 'Sinday' to look forward to each week the blips somehow don't happen?
You may find that over time it doesn't work for you but it's all trial and error - what works for some doesn't for others!
Good luck everyone!

Whiff Wed 19-Jan-22 17:24:15

That's what I love about this thread we all have the same goal but different ways to get there. And can get ideas from eachother .

My exercise class went well today. Only one exercise and cooling down stretches done on a chair. The rest we did standing up. Did it without my stick but had to hold the back of the chair a couple of times. No break between exercises. Our instructors showed us the next exercise before we finished the one we where doing. It was great fun. And because we are a smaller group able to talk more while having our hot drink and biscuits. Looking forward to next week.

Take care all .

NanKate Fri 21-Jan-22 15:43:20

I agree Whiff we all bring something to the table here.

I have to hold onto the chair too when I do my Qi Gong, well just the one legged bit ?

Have a good weekend Pears and Apples. ?

VioletSky Fri 21-Jan-22 17:11:22

It's been a stressful week, I hav e eaten all of my feelings and more...

I don't know if I can pull myself together for the weekend but will try

Happy Friday all

Sarahmob Sat 22-Jan-22 13:03:15

I have ‘sinday’ too and I’m convinced it’s kept me on track over the last 20 months. Particularly when it comes to cake (my downfall). I can now eat a piece on a Sunday and not look to finish the rest through the week. I look forward to my ‘treat’ and really enjoy it.

Shirleyw Sun 23-Jan-22 04:14:13

Honestly, up again…2 and a half , I thought I’d of stayed the same…just going to have to pull my finger out.

Soon be February , crocuses and snowdrops will start to poke through, love that. Fed up with this cold weather. Soon be spring ?

Sarahmob Sun 23-Jan-22 08:42:23

Good morning Pears,
I’m pleased to report another 1 pound loss this week. It’s been a busy one so that helps, although I’ve had the munchies at times in the evening so have really had to employ some will-power. Let’s hope he sticks around.
Shirley try not to get too despondent and stick with it. I’ll be pleased when the better weather arrives too, it’s been so cold and that affects how and what we eat.
Been good to read your posts and ‘catch-up’. Have a good week everyone.

fourormore Sun 23-Jan-22 09:22:26

Another member of the gang who has had a dodgy week!
These few weeks are going to be difficult I know as we have alternate weeks with the decorator in - I'm not blaming him!!!

He coming tomorrow to start the next room - but well worth the temporary upheaval. If we had an extra room to dump everything it would be great but we have to squeeze as much as possible out of the 'Working room' into an already fully furnished room. Having a small house is lovely (until times like this!) but it will be brilliant when it's all done.

This week I know I have broken a few rules so I'm not complaining that I have stayed the same. My friend Will, (Will Power) has definitely left the building. I have succumbed to biscuits etc. in between all the decluttering and we've been out for a couple of lunches.

I am expecting the next few weeks to be much the same but will concentrate on staying the same or losing a little. We all need to not over-expect too much of ourselves when various things are going on in life. That's the beauty of this thread - there is always encouragement when a member's circumstances cause them to lose heart temporarily - together we get each other back on track!

Good luck everyone as we start another week!

Dorsetcupcake61 Sun 23-Jan-22 11:00:37

Hmm not a good week here but have at least stayed the same. I hope you are fully recovered Whiff, that sounded very scary.
Keep on keeping on everyone. Spring is round the corner!?.

Madgran77 Sun 23-Jan-22 11:33:09

Stayed the same ...and I know the reason! Self sabotage, "rewards" cos I'm fed up! Interesting one this, rewards as a child tended to be food. I suspect I am a text book acase of childhood practice linked to adult "comfort eating"! Oh well, still filling in my fitness pal and consequently learning a lot about calories!!

Whiff Sun 23-Jan-22 11:49:32

Another one who is up this week only 3/4lb did think it would be more. Had seeded rolls ,bagels and crumpets in. My daughter and grandson's where here for lunch on Friday. Trouble is had the things in for a few days so had one of each and of course had to use the left overs apart from the 7 crumpets which are in the freezer and staying there.

Wish someone would invent individual boxes with a time lock on it that goes in the freezer. That way I could set the lock to only open 1 box a week. Any budding inventors out there ?

On thing about being on this thread if we have a bad week no one treats you like a naughty schoolgirl that's why I hated slimming clubs. They even in the days I went back in the 80's and early 90's where expensive . I tried 3 different ones over the years but only went 4 times at the most. It was awful.

Spoke to my neurologist on Friday by video call my daughter brought her tablet and set it up for me. He was pleased with the seizures stopping but said if even if the arm and leg jerks start again because I am the lowest dose means can go up if need be. He never had the report about my blood. I had some taken to be genetically tested. But Covid hit and tests for that took over. But he did say genetics had come along way in 2 years. He will let me know when they want more blood. I asked if he wanted to talk to my daughter so they had a talk about me .

Since my husband died I never hid anything medical from them and the times either of them took me to see a specialist they came in with me pre Covid of course. I do tend to down play things. But it's good the doctors have information from the children's prospective. Ironically it was my son who took me to see my neurologist. He was a loving caring son once.

Had a letter from my cardiologist and found out what they where looking at with the MRI. They were looking for any abnormal connections between the chambers of my heart. There aren't any and said my heart function is strong. But they want me to have an ultrasound as there is still something wrong . Not worried as they are looking after me.

Four once all the decorating is finished it will be worth all the up heaval. And will look beautiful for the spring.

Sarah well done with the pound lose. How I wish I could just have 1 slice of cake. I don't make myself any as I have no stop where certain foods are concerned. That's why I like going to my daughter's I have a biscuit as my treat . I do have a biscuit after exercise class but only one and try and not have a chocolate one. But some weeks they all had different amounts of chocolate so I choose the one with the least.

Shirley you will soon get it off. I'll be glad when the spring arrives to. I can get back in the garden. But it's lovely to see the bulbs getting bigger. Have a crocus open in my front garden. And the bungalow at the end of the road their cherry tree is full of pink blossom. Have you noticed it's getting dark a bit later. Mind you February and March can be bad months weather wise.

Anyway rambled on as per usual.

Have a good week you lovely bowl of fruits??.

VioletSky Sun 23-Jan-22 11:52:03

Sorry so many are feeling a bit down for being up..

I'm scared to weigh myself!

It's just a blip though, when you reach your goals you will be up and down all the time as that's normal, water fluctuations, normal.

Keep on keeping on, any changes made are going to have a positive impact on health.

I'll weigh soon. Maybe

Whiff Sun 23-Jan-22 11:57:44

As usual takes me so long to type new posts pop up.

Dorset I am fine thank you. Staying the same is an achievement. It shows when you get to the weight you want you can stay there.

Madgran glad you are finding the fitness pal useful. It's amazing the amount of calories that are in some foods. Especially foods that you would think where low cal. Keep going is a marathon not a sprint.

?

Madgran77 Sun 23-Jan-22 13:53:32

Whiff Yes interesting re calories. Trouble is tge self sabotage comfort eating doesn't stop me eating them even when I know the high calorie content! ?

Whiff Sun 23-Jan-22 13:59:32

Madgran I am so used to weighting and measuring everything even when I over eat I know by how many calories. Madness I know but it helps me limit the damage. If I am having a bad day I allow myself 300 extra cals. And I stick to it. It doesn't help me lose weight but limits the damage. ?

Madgran77 Sun 23-Jan-22 14:22:32

Something to think about for me Whiff .. as I trudge past the lovely little bakery not far from my house, with savoury goods and delicious cakes, when in the doldrums!! ?

Pixieboots Sun 23-Jan-22 22:00:33

It seems Will (Power) has been deserting a lot of us. Not too pleased with only a pound loss but I’ll take that over a pound gain. For those with gains ~ they are small gains so dont despair. Hope there are more losers next week??

CocoPops Mon 24-Jan-22 04:48:37

No change in my weight this week. I am plodding on with the Low FODMAP diet for IBS and am feeling better. The next stage is to introduce one of the High FODMAP foods ( eg onions) and see if it triggers symptoms again. Interesting times!
Have a great week everyone.

Nansnet Mon 24-Jan-22 05:01:40

Well, Mr W Power hasn't shown his face to me at all this past week! All my good intentions have flown out the window! I don't know why I do it, but every time I have a good couple of weeks, and manage to lose a few pounds, I end up sabotaging myself and regaining it all again ... literally!! All the naughty things that I know I should avoid have crept back into my diet this week, and I've not bothered to write anything down in my journal. Why is that?! I know from past experience that if I write down what I'm eating it really helps me to stay on track ... so why did I stop?!angry

So, here I am back at square one again! I will not let this defeat me! I'm wiping the slate clean, and starting afresh as of right now!

Whiff Mon 24-Jan-22 05:34:49

Pixieboots a pound is a lot. If you look at a pound of sugar it's a lot. I am happy if I only lose quarter of a pound a week.

I am 63 of a generation that was brought up to believe you had to lose 2lb a week every week to lose weight. Also the age of the stupid diets cabbage soup, boiled egg and grapefruit,PLJ before every meal etc.

When in fact slow and steady gets the weight off and more importantly keeps it off.

I spent decades going on a diet being unhappy because I didn't lose 2lb and lost 2-3 st then one week put on so I gave up. Put the weight back on and more.

Luckily I had a husband who loved me for me no matter what size I was.

I finally realised it's a marathon not a sprint . When I got jaundice and couldn't do anything for 5 months I decided I had to finally tackle my morbid obesity for that's how big I got. Well over 19st size 32. That was in 2017. I am size 16 still trying to lose the the last stone and half to get to my goal. It isn't a stupid goal but 11st.

But I will no give up until I reach my goal. It's a marathon not a sprint. And NanKate has given dieting a better name eating less for life and that's what I have been and still doing.

We put to much pressure on ourselves as women to look and be a certain way when in fact we have to be true to ourselves. Eating less for life means we put ourselves first for once. Because as women we tend to put other people's needs before ourselves. Or is it just me.

Taking your measurements helps because some weeks you may not lose weight but inches especially if you start or do more exercise. As muscle weighs more than fat.

The hardest thing about losing weight is deciding to do it and sticking to it. Putting a time limit on losing a certain amount of weight by a set date never worked for me so I haven't set myself a time limit. If it takes another year to get to where I want to be so be it.

Cocopops glad your IBS is getting better and hope you can eat more things soon without triggering another bout of it. ?

Dorsetcupcake61 Mon 24-Jan-22 06:10:26

Good morning fellow pears! As always I often check in but dont have time to add anything!
This morning I felt I had too.
Many of us seem to be struggling and finding it hard to keep on track,me included.
This morning I woke up feeling quite out of sorts-anxious etc. The strange thing being I have absolutely nothing I can pin it on. There have been times over last few years when I have had good cause!
Maybe it's the time of year-dull January? Maybe it's the current world situation which is very unsettling? Either way thank goodness for my fellow pears and a safe place we can be honest?
