On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears and Apples who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

Hello everybody, I’m so sorry to hear of your pain Whiff - we can all be wise after the event, I’m great at doing too much. I’ve had golfer’s elbow since January which means I can’t do as much knitting/sewing/gardening as I like. A friend suggested 20 mins rest for every 20 mins activity so I’m trying that. Have also been drinking much more water with lemon and will definitely try the fruit tea. I substitute with cauliflower rice too but didn’t know about the frozen stuff, will try that too. I’ve lost another pound and three quarters this week which is great as I haven’t felt that I’ve been missing out, like NanKate I’m keeping an eye on portion size. Keep going everybody and thanks for you support.

I am definitely going to try the Iceland cauli rice SachaMac .
In fact I could eat that Chilli meal right now. It looks Yum.
Thank you.
Wishing everyone the best possible week. 🌻

SachaMac Mon 15-May-23 17:41:57

Hi just wanted to pop in and answer your question about cauliflower rice TillyTrotter I buy it frozen from Iceland in a big bag with four packs in each bag, it cooks in 3 mins 40 secs in the microwave. I love it and although I can have ‘free’ proper rice on SW I find if I want good weight loss I do need to regulate the carbs. You can of course grate a fresh cauliflower but the frozen is much easier. I’ll attach a pic of my rice and SW chilli whole plateful free and also low in calories.

Morning all, welcome foxyglove & saunton.

Lost 2 lbs this week I’m pleased to say. Been changing my eating and drinking habits this week, think I got a bit of the arthritis setting in on my right hip so been reading up on it and having raw cider vinegar and honey daily also black strap molasses also snacking on walnuts and raisins, just a small handful mind due to the high calories content. For my weekend tipple I stayed off Bacardi and coke I been having organic red wine and managed to get a bottle from Abel and Cole with no sulphites, was ok, drinkable, not cheap either. Shall see how it goes, need an x ray really to determine it .

Weather was good yesterday but not as good as predicted, Saturday was cold. Have a good week all.

Whiff Sun 14-May-23 18:00:44

Four well done with the loss. Losing weight is odd you can over eat and lose weight but stay strictly to your cal allowance and stay the same. No rythme or reason to it. After weeks of staying the same put on 1.25lb this week but it's my own fault as I have over eaten.

legs are hurting since yesterday but I over did it in the garden used the 4 bags of compost my daughter and family brought me for my birthday. Was in the garden for 3 hours . Instead of resting sorted out all the threads one of my craft group brought for me on Thursday after putting them on thread holders sorted out into my thread boxes but instead of being sensible and doing at the table and being level. I did it on my foot stool which is level with my armchair but it meant I was leaning forward and putting pressure on my knees and lower legs. Hence pain and my legs are swollen .

But I must be out of sorts as I have a large mouth ulcer and very tired all week during the day. Which has made my HPX syptoms worse. Hence the 2 large burns on my hands which I didn't feel straight away when I did them on the oven getting the cake and biscuits out for my craft group. Glad to say they all went.

SachaMac brilliant weight lose bet you have lost a few inches as well as the lbs .

I like fruit tea but leave the teabag in while drinking it. That's the good thing about it it's still nice it you forget it and it goes cold like I do often.

Busy week exercise class tomorrow, hair cut Tuesday ,12 bags of compost being delivered on the morning and then at my daughter's on the afternoon, Thursday craft group,Friday need to rest because Saturday going out to dinner with my daughter then going to the theatre to see Keith Brymer Jones which is my mother's day present.

Have a good week everyone.

What is going on Pears???
It must be the 'Silly Season'
I've LOST very nearly one whole pound
But there's no rhyme or reason!!!!!

That's the limit of my poetry you'll be pleased to know !
I honestly cannot understand how this has happened as I have comfort-ate big-time this week and have really sinned with yummy toast on several occasions and covered it with peanut butter.
Hopefully I won't pay for it at next Sunday's weigh-in so I will have to make an extra effort this week, but I really cannot understand it.
I do apologise to struggling Pears as I know how it feels to try really hard and not get a result - it's tough - but hang on with us and we will all get there - slow but sure will win the race!
Have a good week everyone!

SachaMac Sun 14-May-23 09:33:53

I don’t like plain water either DamaskRose I’ve recently tried the cold fruit tea infusions in my water bottle, they’re really nice & have subtle flavours, I was surprised as I didn’t think I’d like them.

DamaskRose Fri 12-May-23 16:42:09

Well done SachaMac! I can’t remember who recommended drinking water but I’ve been trying to do that. Don’t like plain tap water so have sliced up lemons in the freezer and put a slice of that in which I enjoy much more. Good luck saunton!

TillyTrotter Thu 11-May-23 19:43:04

Welcome Foxygloves and saunton to our supportive thread.
We all have ups and downs with our scales but no one judges and you will always find kindly suggestions and advice here.
I am back to half fat butter, skimmed milk, apples and generally swapping out unhealthy for healthy options without making meals too miserable.
I hope to achieve a loss of 1 or 2 lbs by the end of next week.
Well done Damask, very good result!

NanKate Thu 11-May-23 19:40:55

So pleased for you SachaMac keep us updated with your progress. 👍

SachaMac Thu 11-May-23 18:30:18

Hi all and welcome to Foxygloves and suanton I’m sure you’ll both enjoy being part of the ‘Pears’ as Whiffsays we all have our own way of going about things but have the same goals in mind.
I recently rejoined Slimming World as I needed the accountability, someone weighing me officially once a week and writing it down in black & white. I had been dilly dallying on and off and my weight was creeping up. I’m pleased to say I weighed in this morning and had lost another pound making a total of 11.5 lbs in 8 weeks. I have also used Nutracheck to count calories in the past and found this to be good. I’m really enjoying group at the moment but that’s partly because they such a nice crowd (a bit like on here) and we have such a good leader. Good luck whatever route you take, have a good week everyone smile 🍐

NanKate Thu 11-May-23 07:54:17

Welcome suanton.

Great advice from Whiff.

Keep with us through the ups and downs. You will not be criticised, just supported.

Whiff Thu 11-May-23 07:18:10

suanton welcome to the fruits. I am addicted to weighting myself everyday but only take what I weight on a Sunday morning naked . Since I started my weight loss journey I have written down my weight in a note book. I started this journey in 2017 and I can see how far I have come since then. Plus I measured myself . The other week I got a tape measure and lay it flat to the inches I had lost but it wasn't until I put it round my body to what it used to measure I realised how different my body is.

Why don't you measure yourself and weight yourself and put it into a notebook and set a day for your weigh in and remeasure yourself every 2-3 months. If you record it every week you can see how you are doing.

I count calories and write down everything I eat and drink after weighting and measuring. Even on dates I over eat I still work out the calories so I know how much over I am. I know I am obsessed but that me .

You have to want to lose weight for you. As I have said many times it's a marathon not a sprint. NanKate calls it eating less for life and that's what it is. You have to change your eating habits but still have a treat just not everyday.

If you have foods you can't control eating don't buy them. I had to do that I know my weaknesses . But you can have healthy satisfying meals takes a bit of working out but soon becomes second nature. I cook from scratch as I don't like ready meals plus I can make lower cal versions that are a bigger portion therefore more filling.

Everyone here has their own way to lose weight you have to find yours. But be kind to yourself . If you have a bad day it's only one day . Each day is a new start.

This is a happy friendly thread no judgements and we talk about other things than weight. But we are all here for eachother. NanKate started it 5 years ago and it's a testament to how much it's loved by all who join it and feel happy here.

Read some of the previous pages they may give you an idea which way may suit you. Good look on your journey and look forward to hearing how you are doing. 🌹

suanton Wed 10-May-23 22:42:31

Newbie here! I find getting weighed somewhere once a week helpful but really don't want to go back to slimming world. The whole accountability thing. Anu thoughts?

Whiff Wed 10-May-23 06:52:50

DamaskRose that's a good loss. It takes eating 3,500 cals less than your body needs to lose a pound in weight. So I have always been happy if I only lose quarter of a pound. Every bit helps.

Even staying the same weight I now look on as an achievement as it means I can maintain a weight not the one I want but it's better than putting on.

Glad you find the group helpful I know they have helped me through things other than losing weight. A brilliant support no matter what is going on in my life .

DamaskRose Tue 09-May-23 13:57:50

Don’t hesitate Foxygloves! You’ll be made very welcome and you’ll get lots of encouragement and helpful advice. I’ve found, I’ve only been here for a short time, that we all want to support each other and that’s what I need. And to be accountable because I don’t want to join a RL group.
So - I’ve lost a pound and three quarters this week! Not a huge loss but I’m so encouraged (after being nearly in tears last week!) and am trying to take lots of the advice I’ve had on here. A huge thankyou everybody!
Well done everybody who has lost and keep going if you haven’t - it’s been an unusual weekend!

Shinamae Tue 09-May-23 11:11:06

Five years, absolutely brilliant!
I have dipped in and out of this thread. The last few weeks calorie counting has not worked for me at all. I am still 11 stone five so a week ago. I started a very strict 16/8 fast, my eating window is 11 am to 7 pm as I work till eight. This means I have to take a ready meal into work when I have my break at five.
I am an apple and seem to be in the minority on this thread, but never mind, I have no backside stick thin
arms and legs and all my weight gathers in my mid section.
I am 70 and still work part time in a care home which is great exercise for me which is just as well because I don’t tend to do anything else 🤷‍♀️I work 4 afternoons a week to till eight. We have a lift, but I only take the lift if I have something like a trolley to take upstairs. Otherwise I use the stairs.
Apologies for the punctuation. My iPad has a mind of its own and I cannot be bothered going back and correcting it. 😬

Whiff Tue 09-May-23 07:34:27

NanKate realised we must have posted near the same time. Great minds😊.

Foxygloves I try and stick to 1200 cals a day but do sometimes go to 1300. But if I stick rigidly to the 1200 I usually lose weight. Remember sometimes you may think you are hungry but in fact thirsty. So if you feel hungry have a drink and see it it's that before eating a snack . Because of my way of eating explained on previous page. I can work out most of my cals for the day and know how many I have left for extras.

I go to a sit fit class at my local church it's not church run but our instructor rents the room for a hour. Don't think sit fit exercises is a easy and you won't get a workout . One week she had 'another one bites the dust 'by Queen on we did fast sit down marching arms and legs to it we where dieing when it ended thing it was 12 mins long. She just said well that was longer than expected but well done for lovely high knees . We all bust out laughing. Then straight into the next exercise. I am still the youngest in my class now at 65 oldest will be 91 soon. Usually 12-14 of us. Glad the bank holidays are over as because our class is on a Monday.

Remember to measure yourself before you start losing weight. If you start exercising you may find as I did once I started to exercise once I got to 15.5st. One week I put on but lost inches. Apparently I built up muscle and it weighs more than fat. I have mobility problems but still can exercise and funny enough I love doing it.

NanKate Mon 08-May-23 21:50:11

When I do calorie counting I give myself 1400 a day as I find on 1200 I feel hungry and am liable to give up. Of course the weight loss is slower.

Foxygloves Mon 08-May-23 21:33:13

Thank you!
Well tomorrow the exercise bike I bought from QVC in a panic last week goes back as I have nowhere to put it and I know I would not stick at it and it was a waste of money.
I have a Fitbit and have put the app on my iPad that records my calories .
Do you reckon 1200 a day is a good target? I don’t know how some people manage on 800 eg on the 5:2 diet. That’s hardly anything as the calories build up so quickly.
Remember the song that went
“It’s illegal, it’s immoral, or it makes you fat!”
It seems very much like that.

Shirleyw Mon 08-May-23 20:32:56

Gosh , 5 years, congrats apples and pears. Thanks to you nankate for starting it, much needed. I was in my late fifties when it started…now I’m Kenny Ball, when I’m 64 . 😅

Whiff Mon 08-May-23 17:56:48

Foxygloves there are old timers and newbies here all are welcome. NanKate has made this a fun place for us and I know I have made friends since I joined. It's a fun happy thread . As I have said many many times losing weight is a marathon not a sprint. What I love about the pears is it's free. You don't need to spend money on faddy diets like Jane plan and the like.
For me diet clubs don't work. Think on the previous page I wrote about what I eat and why I do it that way. It's a long post. Because of my health I found a easy way to have healthy satisfying meals. Plus it's cheaper cooking from scratch and no weird additives .

When I have friends or family stay they are happy to eat my way. But I always do a naughty pud and make a cake or biscuits.

We don't just talk about losing weight so it's a thread for anything goes . Like my love of craft and gardening. Lots of my seeds I planted some with my grandson are all growing and it will soon be time to plant my beans and other things into large pots to grow outside.

Don't worry about fitting it as we are all shapes and sizes from all over the country or world .

NanKate says it's eating less for life which sounds better than dieing. Welcome to the fruits Foxygloves.

NanKate Mon 08-May-23 17:52:42

Foxygloves no need to tiptoe in here. We are just a band of Pears and Apples wanting to lose weight and become fitter. Some of our members have been here from Day 1. Everyone is friendly and helpful. Please just jump in and be part of this thread.

Whiff is the one to follow for calorie counting, it has worked for her. I try to eat what I want but in small portions.

Quite a few of us have health issues such as underactive thyroids and mobility issues which can slow things down.

Just hang on in there.

Foxygloves Mon 08-May-23 10:14:22

Tiptoeing in hesitantly as you all seem to be good friends and know each other.
Eldest D gave me a bit of a pep talk aka lecture last week telling me all the things I know already.
I am 2 stone over weight and both feeling and showing it. I have wardrobes full of lovely clothes which either do not fit, or, if they do, I no longer look good in them. At 75 I know I have slowed down, I walk every day but get breathless going up hill and fortunately my dog appreciates the chance of a sniff and a wee!
I have done assorted diets over the last 20 years - actually Rosemary Conley accompanied by her aerobics class was the most effective but fashions change and I understand that her fat free philosophy “at all costs” is not actually a good idea.
So, LSS what do you recommend?
WW looks complicated, SW appeals but sounds too good to be true (unlimited anything can’t be possible) I have even toyed with Diet Chef and Jane Plan - calorie control by ready meals delivered once a month. But again, I can’t believe that is good for one.
I live alone and admit portion control can be a bit hit and miss, plus the temptation to finish what I have cooked, even if it was meant to last two days.
I approached my Dr but got no help whatsoever! Getting desperate if I am being honest.
Help! (Please)

TillyTrotter Mon 08-May-23 10:05:00

Thank you NanKate for starting this thread, I had no idea it began so long ago as I am comparatively new on it.
👋 to all Pear’s .
We must all have enjoyed foods over the past few days of glorious celebration that we would not usually eat.
For me it is ‘back on it’ today, and at weigh in I have not gained any in the past week (amazingly) so the scales sit at 10 st 4 lbs.
Would really like to loose those 4 lbs in the next 4 weeks and I will be aiming for that.
I’ve not had cauliflower rice - can you really taste the cauli SachaMac ?
Good Luck to everyone, and cheers to NanKate and Whiff 🥂 and our new Majesties. 🤴 👸.
