On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears and Apples who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

I agree the quilts were beautiful Whiff we didn’t vote as it was well into the afternoon when we got upstairs and by then I think the voting was over. It would have been hard to pick a favourite.
I was torn between the Bee and the Hare on the punch embroidery. I have started the hare and it’s quite addictive, can be a bit of a pain re-threading the needle though & my eyes start to get a bit tired but it’s looking good so far smile

SachaMac we when to the Dapple grey for lunch but where there just after 12. Did you vote for your favourite quilt. Mine was the Greek style one and my daughter's was the one with the large panels showing all things in the garden . But all the quilts entered where fabulous. Who knew they could be so different. I was explaining to my daughter how punch embroidery worked. I loved the bee the owner had done. I didn't buy anything as I have 2 cross stitch projects on the go. Plus 6 kits and a Tomte door stop I want to make for my youngest grandson but that's for Christmas. Have to think of something for his brother . I made him a Tomte door stop couple of years ago. Lot of my work I put on the cross stitch thread. My craft group of a Thursday is growing in numbers. We are a strange group in another life we would never have met but love of craft brought us together. And we are our own support come therapy group as we talk about anything and everything. Just so happens we all have illness and disabilities but it is a group open to all just happens we all have health problems.

TillyTrotter we all have our ups and downs with our weight but the main thing is don't give up. I am still going and been at it since 2017. It's hard to keep going but it's well worth it. 💐

I was at the Quilt and Stitch event in Uttoxeter yesterday Whiff I probably passed you, I went with two friends. We went to the Dapple Grey pub for lunch, we were in there eating when the 3pm alarm went off. I had the roast beef dinner as I thought that would fit in best with my plan.
Did you get anything nice, I got some lovely Liberty fabric to do some quilting & bunting and a couple of punch embroidery kits, a hare and a daisy. Thought it would stop me snacking if I can sit doing that.
Love your dragon, have a great birthday, my mouth is watering at the thought of those cakes.
Have a good week all.

TillyTrotter Mon 24-Apr-23 09:07:59

Your baking always sounds lovely Whiff and will be much appreciated. Who doesn’t like homemade?
No loss for me either - it’s a plus 1 lb.
I’m not happy about it but I love pastry too and ate a tasty chicken and mushroom pie last week knowing it’s not a healthy option.
Good Luck everyone for this new week.

VioletSky Mon 24-Apr-23 07:50:39

No loss for me this week but I didn't gain so very happy 😊

Have a great week all

Sarahmob lovely to hear from you and you give me hope one day I will get to the weight I want.

SachaMac brilliant weight lose. Wear your sticker with pride when you get it.

TillyTrotter and Four I had a husband who eat what he liked and never had a weight problem . He would bring home treats but he was brilliant and when I decided to diet he supported me and never criticised when I gave up. But he loved me no matter how big I got.

Weight stayed the same really must put in more effort. Did have a blow out yesterday . I won tickets to the Quilt and stitch village at Uttoxeter racecourse so my daughter took me yesterday. And I treated us to a pub lunch. It was a Marston's pub and it had cals on the menu but just choose what I fancied. Had a delicious leek, cheese and potato pie, chips ,peas and a homemade York pud and gravy. Didn't eat all the chips but the pie was heavenly. Haven't had short crust pastry for years. Will put more Welly into my sit fit class this afternoon. Because of bank holidays there will be no class for 2 weeks then back for 2 weeks then yet another bank holiday. Thank goodness my craft group is on Thursday's. Made gingerbread last week everyone loved it hadn't made it since my husband died. Cut into 16 pieces. Making cakes this week as it's my birthday at the weekend . But our numbers are raising so will make 2, Victoria sandwich and marmalade cake. My daughter and grandsons taking me for lunch on my birthday no idea where but it will be fun.

Have to tick the next age range bracket on things as I will be 65. But age doesn't bother me. In my head still 50 but my body at the moment feels 90 as in a pain flare but don't let it stop me. If I did I wouldn't do anything.

Finished my dragon cross stitch must finish my Amsterdam scene and peony ones before I can start on a new project.

Have a good week all.

Good luck with the sticker Sachamac You have done really well.
Like several others on this thread, my problem is that I am not always able to choose what I do and don't eat!
I am so lucky is still having my hubby, but he is the main cook and he seems to be able to eat whatever he likes with no ill-effects! Life's not fair is it!
Salad season is here though so I am able to adjust a bit by having 'whatever he decided we're having' but with salad rather than chips etc.
I have been really strong willed this week and even watched him scoff biscuits!!! I have managed to lose just over half a pound so I am happy with that.
Good luck fellow strugglers! flowersflowersflowers

TillyTrotter Sat 22-Apr-23 09:12:35

Splendid SachaMac 🙂 . You will get that sticker soon.
I have my nose to the grindstone, cutting out the carbs and drinking more water ….. watch this space.
Have a good weekend everyone.

SachaMac Fri 21-Apr-23 13:56:43

Hi all, just a quick update, I lost 3lb this week which has put a big smile on my face. Just 4lbs to go before I get my first stone sticker. Have a good weekend everyone and good luck with your results.

TillyTrotter Fri 21-Apr-23 09:35:24

* Well (grrr spellcheck)

TillyTrotter Fri 21-Apr-23 09:34:39

It is heartening for all of us Sarahmob and We’ll Done to you.
Another weekend is nearly here and my DH loves treats at the weekend (he says he is good all week) and the fridge is already full with cheesecake, clotted cream and Rose chocolates.

It makes it so difficult for me (I can hardly not go in the fridge and therefore see it), but it is part of the willpower thing isn’t it?
No one makes us eat the “sins” only us.

Be strong Pear’s and Apples - we can do this (or “you’ve got this” as they say on TV.

NanKate Fri 21-Apr-23 08:01:26

Thanks Sarahmob just the sort of encouragement all us Pears need. So pleased for you 👍💐

Sarahmob Thu 20-Apr-23 21:09:10

Hi Ladies, I just thought I’d pop in to say hello as it’s ages since I’ve been on. I want to encourage you all to keep going and say that it’s possible to keep it off once you hit target. I hit my target several months ago and although my weight fluctuates slightly (when we went on holiday for example) I am maintaining that loss. The support and encouragement that you all gave was invaluable to me.

Shirleyw Thu 20-Apr-23 16:56:59

Hi Damaskrose, the nhs weight loss app is very good, it’s what I do.
My d/h is like yours, he likes snacky things, in the evening he sometimes munches away on Pringles, he knows when to stop though, and is a slender shape.
Enjoy the rest of your holiday.

NanKate Thu 20-Apr-23 15:26:41

Hello DamaskRose. Can I recommend that you go onto YouTube and find a beginners session of either Tai Chi or Chi Gong, very similar. They are free.

This will help you to become more supple. I use a chair to hold onto if I have to raise one foot off the ground. You could start with a short session of say 15 mins.

Best of luck.

TillyTrotter Thu 20-Apr-23 13:59:04

Have a good holiday Damask. My DH is a feeder which is why I find a bowl of crisps and nuts by the side of me without my asking for them. Can I resist them 😱

DamaskRose Thu 20-Apr-23 10:49:57

Thankyou for the welcome and for Whiff’s advice. I have not weighed myself and haven’t got a tape measure as I’m on holiday. I’ll do that when I get home, definitely. Like Whiff my mobility is limited in that I can’t walk far so I’m going to look for an exercise class in my local town or even online though I know it’s harder to discipline myself alone. DH doesn’t mind what I look like and he loves snacky things (and never puts on an ounce!) so they’re always in the house. But really with me it’s all down to discipline and if I’m accountable to this group hopefully that will help. Thanks again to all of you.

SachaMac Wed 19-Apr-23 15:07:35

Hello DamaskRose welcome to the group, you will certainly find lots of support and plenty of helpful tips on here. I have recently rejoined Slimming World and I’m doing well (slight blip after Easter) I weigh in on Thursday mornings. I agree with Whiff on not buying in trigger foods, if I do I am just tempted to binge on them, for me that’s chocolate and cakes. I’m enjoying snacking on fruit and feel better for it. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

TillyTrotter Wed 19-Apr-23 09:45:38

Welcome DamaskRose I love your name.
The support you will find on here from Whiff and the gang is
tremendous.
You and I share similar body shapes and I am on a see-saw constantly, but will keep the momentum going.
I am sure we can help you to lose that half a stone.
They say a small amount is harder to lose than when you have more than a stone to lose, but it is possible, and you can do it 🙂

NanKate Wed 19-Apr-23 08:00:42

Another welcome DamaskRose. Good advice from Whiff as always. You will receive support from our lovely members. Never feel reluctant to say if you have had a bad week, it happens to us all. Onwards and downwards 👎

Whiff Wed 19-Apr-23 06:28:50

DamaskRose welcome . Don't forget to measure yourself at the start of your eating less for life as NanKate has renamed dieting. Remember it's not a sprint but a marathon. Do not put to much pressure on yourself if you have a bad day just brush it off and start again the next day. As you would have read people here have different was to lose weight which suits them. For me it's weighting and measuring everything and counting calories. I don't buy foods I have no control over ice cream, chocolate and biscuits .Cheese I buy a 400g block and cut into 8 and freeze . Went a make a lasagne or pasta bake I just use a cube to make the white sauce but only use milk and flour with the cheese crumbled in and cook all in one using a whisk. Because of the fat in mature cheddar you do not need to use spread as well. Saves calories and no one has ever noticed the difference.

I am happy to lose quarter of pound a week but some weeks I stay the same or like this week put a pound on but I haven't given up. And that's the main thing don't give up. I lost 7st the last 2 years still trying to lost the stone and bit but if it takes me years I will do it one day. Started my journey in 2017 over 19st size 32. Once I reached 15.5st went to my first exercise class because of my mobility I was born with a rare hereditary neurological condition which effects my limbs etc. The instructor altered the exercises so I could do leg exercises holding on to a chair and sit down for arm ones.

Once I moved house found a sit fit class due to Covid that closed. Then found another sit fit class run by the council when the funding was cut. I found the class I go to now every Monday afternoon. I can do the exercises easier than I can walk. But our instructor pushes us she's in her 60's I am the youngest in the class at 64 oldest member is 90. Usual 12-14 of us each week. I love it and always feel better afterwards. We do some exercises sitting down some standing back of the chair.

I am a size 16, 12st + . I wasted decades of being obese but my husband loved me for me . I was 11st when we met he was always 10-10.5 st until in his 30's then 11st. He loved me and supported my when I tried to weight but never criticised when I gave up. My weight never bothered him he loved me and still fancied me until the day he died.

Remember lost weight for yourself as it's the only way it will work took me decades to realise that. Good luck on your journey.

DamaskRose Tue 18-Apr-23 21:16:35

I’d like to join in please. Today I started the NHS calorie counting diet. I am technically overweight and they have given me a target of half a stone to lose in 12 weeks, I would like to lose a stone over a period of time, don’t care how long it takes as long as I can keep it off. At this point I just hate how I look, I’m short and just feel dumpy! But I need support and am really hoping you kind ladies will give it. Thankyou.

Whiff Mon 17-Apr-23 05:35:04

Tilly well done 2lb off. That's the thing with weight loss it's swings and roundabouts. But the main thing is not to give up and carry on. Which everyone here does.

CocoPops well done with the lose . I think every bit counts and a loss is a win.

SachaMac holiday times are hard especially Easter and Christmas with so much chocolate and other goodies about. Also if the weather is awful or you have visitors you don't get as much exercise as usual. And your daily routine is throw out the window. But you keep going and that's an achievement.

Four well done staying the same especially with all the treats about.

Had a very stressful parts of the week and put a 1lb on. As some know about my son . It's coming up to 3 years since I last saw him so decided to try one last time. Which of course put the lid on the coffin . Abusive text followed so spent the day crying. Then pulled myself together but stress ate. Made some scones as I wanted something but eat all 8. Which I knew I would but didn't feel guilty because I needed something . Lucky to get away with just putting on a 1lb. Especially with the amount of olive spread and jam I put on. But it was my jam so not as sweet as commercial made.

My daughter and family came back from holiday on Tuesday and on Thursday had her eldest for the day. He was here before 9 so after a play we made strawberry biscuits. He asked a few weeks ago. I had made my oat and marmalade cookies both boys eat one but didn't like them . He said they needed to be more bitter . Think he meant sweet as it was made with Seville oranges with reduced sugar. He suggested strawberry . So I got some dried strawberries. While dried blueberries, cherries and cranberries are lovely. Strawberries are a disappointment.

We made them and while they where cooling planted all my veg seeds and put them in the greenhouse. Played a sort of football. Did my best but when you have rubbish balance and use a walking stick nannie was wobbly but he still had fun.

After lunch walked to the free library at the church we went for the Easter egg hunt. I took some books for it and he choose a book for him and his brother. Then we went to the park as it was on our way back to mine. He be friended a 7 year old he's 5. While they played I talked to his dad. They had a lovely time. It was dry, sunny but there was a cold wind . He had about half hour play and then we went home. Got talking to a lovely lady and her dog. My grandson isn't used to dogs but they hit off and she loved him stroking her. Her owner said she was a rescue dog. And had been used by a man who bred pit bulls as a victim for him to train them to fight . Humans can be so cruel. Said she was a mess when she first had her but you never have thought she had such a terrible life.

Had a hot chocolate when we got back and I made scones while he watched TV as I wasn't happy with the biscuits. My daughter and grandson came about 5. And my grandson cried he didn't want to go home. Proves I can't be the horrible mom / nannie my son makes me out to be. The little one wanted lots of kisses and cuddles.

Having the eldest on the 2nd as the teachers are on strike so we will go out for the day given him 2 options so he can choose where we go. At their house on Wednesday for playtime and dinner.

MayBee I have homemade soup everyday of the week when home and find it filling. Because it's boiled it's hot and slows down my eating so it fills me up. Yesterday's lentil and whatever soup was made with 160g red lentils ,carrots, leeks, sweet potato, courgette and rainbow chard which I grew. 5 veg oxo's , s and p plus lot of dried mint. All cooked in my largest saucepan and once cooked blitz with my hand blender delicious. Plus as it stands in the fridge in a large container it gets thicker so always add some extra water to my 4 label fulls of soup to reheat. Lasts me 6 lunches. Don't laugh but I have made my soup from cauliflower, broccoli, sprouts and onions at times as it has been the only veg I had in the freezer plus lentils of course. But it tasted lovely.

I don't buy bread products unless having visitors as I can't leave it alone. Love the stuff.

Exercise class today and craft Thursday baking week so will be taking some goodies in .

Have a good week everyone.

MayBee70 Sun 16-Apr-23 22:34:58

I’m now staying at my partners house for two more weeks. We would have been going back to mine today, then extended it for a week and I’ve now realised there’s something I really want to go to the following week. My back has been bad, the weather has been awful and I’ve put on pounds but it means I’ve got two weeks to turn things round. I feel so much better when the weather warms up. So two weeks of walking, doing the 16:8 diet and eating well.

VioletSky Sun 16-Apr-23 12:13:09

Sadly it's nearly over

The first week I did well because of the Going Through Stress Diet (which I do not recommend) but I made up for it the second week with my daughters making easter cakes etc

But I'm not giving up, like all of us smile
