On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears and Apples who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

TillyTrotter Sun 26-Mar-23 20:17:24

A new week coming up and “Good Luck” to all in the Pears and Apples with keeping our meal portions balanced, and may we have the strength to resist the snacks.
I will weigh at the end of the week,

Cake too 😑

MayBee70 Sun 26-Mar-23 18:12:55

My stomach swells when I eat bread even though I’m not gluten intolerant or anything like that.I feel so much better when I don’t eat it but I then slip back into the habit of eating it again.

VioletSky Sun 26-Mar-23 14:55:14

It seems strange something so bland is such a bug factor but I can see it is.

For instance, if I'm hungry I will often snack on toast thinking I'm choosing the better option.

Omelette is amazing, quick and easy so I might go for that in future

fourormore Sun 26-Mar-23 14:46:52

Violetsky bread really does it for me and I don't know why as I never have it 'as well as' - it's always 'instead of' and it's such a shame as I do like bread! The proper stuff not cardboard rubbish!
I went wrong this week as I was having poached eggs on toast needing two slices of bread. The problem was that the two slices were fine but a single yummy crust was left and I succumbed blush so I deserve the gain this week!
Whiff sadly this week's gain cannot be blamed on the short break - we haven't gone yet! It is this week so I'm not hopeful when I weigh next Sunday hmm

VioletSky Sun 26-Mar-23 13:07:30

4 pounds is incredible!

I've also had a bread week, I went off porridge. No progress.

Bread just might be the issue here too!

I'll cut it out next week and see what happens smile

Whiff Sun 26-Mar-23 13:01:44

SachaMac brilliant 4lb glad SW working for you.

Four the main thing is you had a good break and relaxed with Mr F . You like the rest of us don't give up and that takes a strong woman . It's easy to give up but you don't nor does anyone else. That's what makes this thread so special we are a group of fighters no matter what is going on in our lives we still have the determination to lose weight.

Well I have stayed the same weight for 7 weeks now. But I look at it as a win as it shows me I can maintain a weight not the one I want but still it's a win. Thankfully I am back to my normal self well as normal as I ever will be 🤣. But who wants to be normal we are all unique.

My daughter and grandsons came yesterday and the eldest harvested Kale, chard and rocket out of my greenhouse. While his brother thought it was funny to slide the door into nannies bum. Finally found a biscuit I make that neither of them liked. My oat and marmalade cookies. The eldest said they needed to be bitterer . It was my homemade Seville orange marmalade and it's quite sharp as I don't put in full amount of sugar I just boil it longer. I don't like sweet jams and marmalades . Anyway my daughter and son in law will enjoy them.

Have a good week fruits. 🍐🍏🍑

fourormore Sun 26-Mar-23 11:11:57

Sadly, the 2lb lost last week has been found but I've had a bit of a 'bread' week and normally bread causes mischief!

We have a few days break this week with dinner, bed and breakfast included so not looking promising for next Sunday's weigh-in blush but we need a break and summer salads are coming so no real worries.
Good luck to everyone else - onward and downwards!

TillyTrotter Fri 24-Mar-23 20:56:17

Delighted with your good news SachaMac . SW is working well for you 🙂

SachaMac Fri 24-Mar-23 20:16:31

Hi all, I’m pleased to report I lost 4lbs during my first week back at SW. I’m very happy as I had a three course meal out on Sunday with my family for Mothers Day. I tried to choose wisely & I steered clear of wine and had a dessert instead. I’m enjoying the plan and have been trying a few different recipes. I’m loving SW recipe for oat pancakes with fruit and Greek yoghurt for breakfast.
I wonder if your leggings have shrunk MayBee70 I brought some new jeggings from M&S and they have been getting tighter & tighter, I then realised they were not tumble dryable and I had been throwing them in the drier as the ones I’ve had in the past have been. I’m sure they’ve shrunk.
Hope you are all having a good week.

TillyTrotter Fri 24-Mar-23 18:54:09

When shopping for what to wear on my legs I am always drawn to styles with elasticated waists.
They are comfortable, unrestricting as the day goes on, and also will accommodate a temporary weight increase of a couple of pounds.
(MayBee owning varying sizes is another way of dealing with our weight when it goes up and down).

MayBee70 Wed 22-Mar-23 17:47:45

MayBee I hope there isn't a widows stoop as I've been one since I was 45. I have enough problems without the thought of that. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Your leggings might have shrunk in the

Alas. I have so many pairs to encompass my varying waistline they hadn’t been washed! The trouble with living in black leggings is it’s very difficult to differentiate between them. I do live in one pair: some short’ish sports leggings with a grey stripe down the leg but they have grown outwards with me.

Whiff Wed 22-Mar-23 17:06:19

Hand trembled and pushed the button .
Wash.

Luckyrose your weight may have even out. Until you brave the scales you won't know. Glad you are feeling better.

On my never ending diet if my diet slipped I used to then gorge on all the things I hadn’t been allowed to eat! I try not to do that these days and treat each day as a new day.

luckyrose62 Wed 22-Mar-23 14:12:23

I am getting into bad habits excuses excuses………I have had a dreadful cold and have snacked. In 3 weeks lost 5lb so pleased but fear I have put on 1lb so must get out of snacking and stop using excuses I like it here

MayBee70 Wed 22-Mar-23 12:46:07

I thought I’d posted this but can’t see it. Maybe I clicked the wrong button. Anyway, I’m now at my partners house and have weighed myself on scales that I haven’t used for 4 months and I’m shocked to find that I don’t seem to have put weight on. Trying on leggings to take away with me they were all really tight so I assumed I’d put on at least half a stone. So, hopefully I can build on it over the next few weeks. For once my knees are ok but my back is sore. I seem to be developing a widows stoop. When I took my car for its yearly MOT and walked round the little town where I take it I’m always aware of previous visits. The town is on a steep hill and I walk up and down the hill while I’m waiting for my car to be checked. This year I realised that I was leaning forward as I walked. Bit of yoga or Pilates is needed I think. And I must restart the 16:8 diet.

Whiff Mon 20-Mar-23 16:53:28

Thank you for the tips. I have been sleeping with pillow between my knees until last night when I didn't need it. Went to my exercise class only one exercise I couldn't do. Had my heat pack on since I got and my back feels ok. 🤗

MayBee70 Mon 20-Mar-23 14:34:21

I found that sleeping with a pillow between my knees helped when I had sciatica. If I slept on my side I then moved it under my knees. I know I rave on about my Shakti mat but after a day working on the garden I could hardly straighten my back so I slept on my Shakti mat and it had eased up the next day.

SachaMac Mon 20-Mar-23 14:31:16

Sorry to hear you’re suffering with
Sciatica Whiff I can sympathise. One tip my Osteopath gave me was to apply an ice pack to the lower back for ten minutes every hour or so during the acute phase. I found that helped as it brings down inflammation. Hope it’s easing off,

Love the jacket too NanKate

NanKate Mon 20-Mar-23 07:23:46

Thank you so much Whiff for your very kind words, so appreciated. 💐

What I like is we are a supportive club, there for each other. Onward and downward dear Pears.

Whiff Mon 20-Mar-23 06:51:32

NanKate the only way to end up on the floor is if I fall. But at my old active ageing class learnt a way to get up if I fall in my bungalow which works for me. Falling outside then I have to have help . When I get in and out of a car I perch on the sit and my legs have to be lifted in and out and have a pull to get out. If it's a taxi driver I always say just sling them in. The drivers here are lovely not once have I been refused the help.

Shirley well done with the pound.

My daughter and grandsons came yesterday afternoon. Had a lovely time . We both love the pottery challenge and my mother's day present is to go with my daughter in May to see Keith at the Playhouse plus dinner out. Brought tears to my eyes. Must be getting softer in my old age .😁

Been doing gentle exercises all week and going to sit fit this afternoon but will only do what I can. But I love going and really missed it last week . Will be going to craft this week as well. But not setting the tables and chairs out. But it's baking week so my offerings will make up for that. Not that they ever expect me to set the room up . It's I hate doing nothing if it's something I can do. 🤗 to you all.

Whiff Mon 20-Mar-23 06:35:07

Have to do this is 2 posts as memory is rubbish at the moment. Four brilliant weight lose. Have a wonderful time when you go away. No doubt you and Mr F will do plenty of walking so you may not put on much at all.

Kissngate she sounds like the slimming club leaders of old. Which I hated. This was back in the 80's went to Slimming magazine clubs (remember when there used to be a magazine called that ) tried 2 different ones and hated it yes I lost weight but when I stayed the same or put one we had to stand up. It was like being bullied all over again as I was at school for being the fat kid. Then tried weight watchers that was even worse so vowed never to join one again.

But I did and its called Pears run by a wonderful woman NanKate best part about every member of it is welcomed and no one belittled or made to feel a failure plus it's free. Full of helpful advice, support and friendship. Best club to join💐

SachaMac glad your class is so different.

TillyTrotter the heat pad has helped a lot the pain in my thighs and bottom has gone just a bit still in my lower back . It was lovely to sit on the pad and there is nothing worse than pain in both bum cheeks . You can't get comfortable anywhere. Haven't needed my extra tablet for nerve pain for 2 days. So just back to my normal dose.

Shirleyw Mon 20-Mar-23 04:06:02

Hope your sciatica has improved whiff.
Like your jacket nankate.

Lost 1 lb this week. Could be better.
Nice not to have it so cold, we had a lovely walk around Wrest park yesterday , just a denim jacket instead of raincoat or the big overcoat.

NanKate Sun 19-Mar-23 20:50:38

Whiff sciatica is miserable. I’ve had it a few times and only got rid of it through acupuncture. My lovely man who gave me the acupuncture also gave advice on exercises. In fact I did them this morning as I felt a twinge at the top of my leg.

This is only for folks who can get up and down from the floor, so beware. I do use the sofa to push myself up.

Exercise 1 get on all fours on the floor and slowly stretch one leg out and raise a few inches for the floor. Gently lower the leg. Do the same with the other leg. Repeat a few times.

Exercise 2 lie on your back on the floor and them curl into a ball as much as you can which James says releases tension on the spine.

These exercises work for me.
