On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears and Apples who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

Pity my tummy feels better. Currently trying to stay awake because I’ll be driving home when the family get back in the early hours and I’m in a house full of crisps and biscuits. Having not wanted to eat them all week I’ve caved in today. Mind you it’s only been one day. I usually attack the Nutella when I’m here!

MayBee I am windy but have no excuse of stomach problems. My mom had IBS she had to take fibregel when her stomach was upset I remember they came in different flavours but they helped her. I don't know if you can still get them ?

MayBee70 Mon 02-Sept-24 19:28:46

Had it continued I would have seen a doctor but I was told by a consultant years ago that I had IBS so I was going to treat it as such and, if the usual treatments didn't work, make an appointment. I've literally thrown the kitchen sink at it and it's worked. My stomach was really bloated so all that gas had to go somewhere! Good job I've only got the dog for company!

Whiff Mon 02-Sept-24 18:21:00

Shirley 4lbs double yippee 😀. Because of my HPX routine helps me cope with it been like it my whole life but didn't get my diagnosis until April 2022 because it's rare and had my whole genome genetically tested.. My neurologist or his colleagues never had with a patient with it. Having problems with my left leg and seeing my neurologists registrar in November as my neurologist book until late December. Plus I think it will help his registrar seeing something with something rare.

MayBee all the cleaning you have been doing is exercise. So you have been burning cals that way . Glad you are pleased your thighs are slimmer.

Sorry to hear about your stomach problems. Have you seen your GP about it and seen a consultant who deals with stomach problems and had a diagnosis ? That way you can get proper medication for when you need it.

It's good you know some foods to avoid. I have 2 friends one can't have gluten and the other one can't have gluten or eggs and has Gilberts can't remember if it call syndrome or disease . But it's effects her liver.

If not I would get an appointment and a referral and correct diagnosis. Sorry you have been suffering so much . You need to drink 8-10 drinks a day and some just plain water. Coffee can cause stomach problems to be worse . But tea and fruit tea shouldn't cause problems . Milk can cause stomach problems to be worse its something to the lactose in milk .
No idea if any of that helps ..But take good care of yourself.

I’ve lost quite a bit of weight but not necessarily for the best of reasons. I’ve had terrible stomach problems for weeks. Started off with heartburn, which I’ve never had before. Got through a bottle of Gaviscon which I’ve never taken before. It then moved downwards resulting in the most awful pain from trapped wind. Put me off eating and was just sipping hot water. Thankfully activated charcoal ( something I had in the dogs medicine box but never thought to take it myself!) helped and then I moved on to Colpermin, which I haven’t had to take for years. Touch wood I’m ok now ( was getting rather worried to be honest) but I’m going to have to be careful with what I eat. I know certain foods cause me problems but I tend to slip into bad habits. And I don’t drink enough water! Great thing is I’ve lost weight off my thighs, which is always the first place I put weight on and the last place I lose it from. I just need to get more exercise. Currently commuting between my daughter’s house where I’m dog sitting and my house. I go back twice a day and do a two hour stint of decluttering/cleaning/tidying up. It’s amazing what you can get done when you focus totally on cleaning ie no iPad or tv plus the fact that when you leave it clean you’re not there to mess it up again. If I had one more week I reckon I would have totally got on top of the whole house, but I’ve only got one more day.

Oh whiff…being suspended lol…glad your back to post on here….i see a thread about someone being banned and they are wanting the person back….seems very rife.

Your very consistent with your keep fit whiff…..well done.

lost 4 lbs whoop whoop.

Weather still pretty good…only a couple more weeks till Autumn.

Whiff Sun 01-Sept-24 17:54:02

NanKate I was suspended and thankfully not banned otherwise I couldn't post. But if you look on the chat forum you will see a couple of posts about banned posters and people asking why. The thread I wrote on was taken down because so many people got their posts deleted. I wrote about some people are bulletproof and can hurt people and get away with it. My post was deleted and the person who reported me owned up to it . Hence my suspension. But I already knew it was her as she is like that.

NanKate Sun 01-Sept-24 17:11:56

I’m mortified Whiff you have been banned. They need their heads looking at. So glad you are back. 👋👍

I like your idea of calorie counting Whiff

Whiff Sun 01-Sept-24 16:52:18

Couldn't post last week as I was suspended from the Thursday until Friday . Lost 1lb last week up 2.25 lb this . Have water retention again but also had a couple of bad days as I didn't realise how much getting suspended upset me . For 2 days I couldn't even read the site as I was blocked . Then I could read but not post.

You made me laugh about your fit bit Shirley . I have upped my pedalling on my static pedals I do 400 a day now . Plus the 7 exercises I do before hand.

I look at the cals on packaging NanKate and make note of them in a note book either per gram or per item as in biscuits . As different brands have different cals. But I have been counting cals from 2017 so know the cals per grams of the foods I usually eat. Anything new I write in my book.

I first used a old rosemary connally cal book. But wrote in it. Until I dropped it into some water I looked for a cal book but decided to make my own . Sorry not much help.

NanKate Sun 01-Sept-24 06:47:21

I’ve decided I need to go back to counting calories. Can any of you recommend an online or book calorie counter. Thanks.

Shirleyw Thu 29-Aug-24 20:47:02

Thanks whiff. Not quite, I’m nearly down a size.

Weathers been fab. Have done lots of walking to improve step count. Have treated myself to a smart watch…..it takes longer getting to my step goal that the Fitbit, I’m sure my Fitbit counted steps whilst I was sitting knitting 😅😅

Whiff Mon 19-Aug-24 10:57:46

Allsorts hope you are feeling better. And I know you can loose the weight as you never give up. I like both almond and oat milk for my porridge but decided just use skimmed milk with honey for it . As I always had skimmed milk in tea and cooking . Having to take my BP 4 times a day my poor bicep is hurting at least today is the last day and will have my 28 readings for my GP and hopefully beable to give them in tomorrow see how I feel as I am going out . If not will pop them in on Thursday as the surgery is in the same road as the library where I go for craft group.

Shirley well done you must have gone down a dress size or more now.

Yesterday I had put on three quarters of a pound but when I weight myself this morning had lost 3lb since yesterday. But my official weigh in is Sunday so the gain stands. Since having the water retention have been recording my weight daily to show my cardiologist when I see him.

Anyway I carry on the good fight. Sit fit this afternoon. Have a good week all.

Shirleyw Mon 19-Aug-24 05:41:02

2lb down , we have a quiet week this week so should knock off a bit more. It’s so difficult to be good when you go away for a bit.

Allsorts Thu 15-Aug-24 07:40:41

Can't believe the typos after I pressed send. This is my old I pad that does this type of thing, that's why I binned it, but sometimes I drag it out and this is how it repays me.

Allsorts Thu 15-Aug-24 07:38:34

Hope you find an skater strive milk Whiff, I gave true everyone out there and they all ruined the taste of my tea, the unsweetened Soya I coukd use on breakfast cereal, but I use ss milk for my read.
Had a health issue for days, couldn't eat a thing, not lost a pound this week but haven't put anything on. No biscuits, sweets or biscuits are coming through my door. Why do people buy you sweet things when you gave said you cant eat them, my son brings in cakes every time he visits, says I don't need to diet. I suppose they see me as old do what's a few pounds. I want to feel better about myself and fit in my clothes, so I give them away. Determined to get another 7lbs off and I will still be 7/10 overweight but at least I will get into my clothes. I'm not a pear I'm top heavy but my waist is coming back, still too big but now not as big as my hips.
You are all doing well, we have our moments as we all like our food and I in particular can fall off the wagon. That's another story I'm not drinking alcohol until Ives lost this weight either.

Whiff Mon 12-Aug-24 17:59:58

Put on 1lb this week which isn't bad as my legs swollen again.
Went to see my GP about my heart blood test results. Going to refer me to cardiologist and may have an echocardiogram. Referring me for bone density scan because of my falls and my mom had osteoporosis. The GP had been with the practice for years but first time I had seen her. She total me I was overweight told her I knew but had lost 7st and trying to loose more but every time my legs swell my weight goes up. Asked what I ate so explained my meals . Told not to have coconut milk as it's high in sugar.😠. So cancelled what was coming with my Sainsbury's order tomorrow and ordered some unsweetened almond milk and unsweetened oat and see which I like for cooking my porridge. Got to take my BP twice a morning, twice in the evening for a week and take in results to reception. But she must thought I was an idiot as she put 4x7 = 28 results 🤔. But at least she listened to me.
Asked if I exercised so told yes everyday and told her what I did. Told her about my sit fit class she didn't seem impressed. But explained what we did. Sit fit is not a soft option as our instructor makes us work. Plus we do stand up exercises holding on to the chair . Last week we had to toe walk twice up the aisle of the church then heel walk twice. Glad to have the chairs to grab hold on to.

So just got to wait and carry on as usual.

Hope you all have a good week .

NanKate Sun 11-Aug-24 08:03:54

Allsorts my apologies I have just re-read my earlier message to you and it doesn’t sound like I meant it to. What I was trying to say is that losing weight by any means is not easy. We all struggle on this thread to keep going and not to give in to over eating, but sometimes we fail. The good thing about our lovely Band of Pears is that we start all over again. Best of luck.

Whiff Sat 10-Aug-24 12:52:48

Allsorts just keep on trying to loose weight . You haven't given up just had a series of blips.

I am going to ask my daughter and brother not to buy me any Turkish delight this Christmas. I used to be able to stick to 2 pieces a day but last year I had 3 boxes and eat a box a day. 😱. My daughters in laws usually buy me a tower of 5 boxes with different chocolates and biscuits . I can't ask them to stop as I don't want to offend them and would rather have them than books or toiletries as they are never what I like. This year already decided to not open the boxes and take the contents still unopened to my craft group . But keep the boxes as they are usually beautiful and I use them to sent people gifts.

Looked at my NHS app last night and my blood test results were there and it says abnormal and when I read the results they where double what they should be. So decided to phone the surgery on Monday and get an appointment to see a GP.. I had a letter asking me to book an appointment this morning.

But not worried as I have had this problem for months . Legs swollen again and will get the quickest appointment I can and miss things I go to if they have an appointment on any of those days. BP within my normal range . If it had been urgent they would have phoned me with an appointment yesterday. As that's what they have done in the past.

But I must knuckle down and get my weight off so being very strict with myself and dropping my cals by 100 a day hopefully that helps.

Keep going Allsorts this Eating Less for Life isn’t for cissies. I really believe losing weight is easier/harder for some than others.

I notice when I am out and about women my age 77 who are slimmer than me, seem to be more agile and move quicker than me. Of course health and mobility are different for each individual. I just try to make myself the best I can depending on my health at the time. Good luck.

Allsorts Fri 09-Aug-24 08:06:52

Haven't posted for a while but looked in, reason being my original overweight when i started was one stone overweight but due to my birthday and other, and bixed if chocolates I really didn't want but I ate, my weight ballooned to 21 lbs overweight, I've never my life been so heavy, nothing fit me. Why do people buy me chocolate when I have asked them not too. I have managed to lose 7 lbs but eating no bread, sugar or meat Monday to Friday, I can’t keep up too long like this so I will continue no sugar or bread, plus walk 2 half hours a day, I'm determined to lose another 7 lbs in the next 6 weeks as I've a short break planned, that way I should be half a stone overweight, which i haven't been for over ten years. I just hope i can keep it up as I'm easily tempted. What is nice now there are a few of my clothes i can just about squeeze into. Ive even bought a pair of trousers one size too small and cut out the labels, plus a swimsuit, as soon as i get I to that swimsuit i will join an aqua class.

Whiff Fri 09-Aug-24 06:26:25

Shirley well done loosing . Grandchildren certainly keep you on your toes or literally in my case. As they say nannie can you walk like this. As they walk about on their toes. But I can as it's one of the exercises at my sit fit class we toe walk and heel walk funny enough I can walk better that way than my normal wobbly walk . 🤷

NanKate Tue 06-Aug-24 07:45:44

Well done Shirley 👍

Shirleyw Tue 06-Aug-24 07:38:47

Lost a pound in last couple of weeks…being active with the grandchildren at the moment so I’m keeping fit 😎.

Hope your all well and enjoying the summer.

Whiff Tue 06-Aug-24 06:07:54

NanKate think it is. Hopefully the results of the blood test I am having today will give answers and I can get it sorted out. Haven't had this problem since I was on Amlodipine which the AF nurses took me straight off it this was in 2021 as it causes swelling and they hate GPs prescribing it. Had problems in the past with my potassium levels but have been on low potassium diet for over 15 years which sorted out that problem. Because I don't eat meat and had problems with low folic acid in the past I take a B12 ,folic acid ,plus cod liver oil ,vitamin C and a combined calcium vitamin D and K tablet everyday. When having my yearly bloods done I always have a fasting cholesterol test as it gives the best results and that was 4.4 down from 5 last year. All the other blood results where normal . I take Flecainide and Apixaban for my heart . I am not worried about my heart as I know when I miss heart beats because I can hear my heart beat in my left ear when I have palpitations or heart flutters I just relax and do my pre natal breathing and it's over within minutes. Since being on the heart medication don't get them very often. Because of the hole in the side of my heart which is small I do get breathless at times but don't get chest pain. And until I do it's safer to leave the hole alone as it could damage my heart more trying to repair it.

I know how to handle my health problems but it's so annoying about my legs as it limits what footwear I can get in from day to day. Good job I kept my tatty old trainers🤣.

NanKate Mon 05-Aug-24 21:30:12

Whiff is some of your weight gain to do with water retention, as I know you are very careful about the food you eat?

In this warm weather particularly my left ankle really begins to swell up and feel uncomfortable.
