On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears and Apples who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

I'm not going to get the jab, but I don't look down on those who do. I'm not saying that anyone here is doing that, but I have heard rather condescending comments about it, as though only those who suffer deserve to be slim. As we know, it's not always as simple as that, is it? Sometimes it's the luck of the draw.

My 'workouts' (if you can call them that - they are really easy) are called 'Strength With Alex' and are free on YouTube. As I said, I can feel the stretch of my muscles, which has to be a good thing, and I can do them without getting breathless.

NanKate Wed 08-Mar-23 12:44:33

Nor me !

I agree completely Whiff especially about not giving up. Remain focused despite having ups as well as downs, I won’t stop trying.

Whiff Wed 08-Mar-23 09:23:05

Doodledog my GPs do prescribed slimming classes for people they have 3 months free . Plus my council has activite aged sit fit exercise classes for 12 weeks free. That's including cuppa and biscuits. Also they have a healthy eating class where they give out healthy eating advice and recipe cards it's free. Recipe cards are on offer in some supermarkets and all supermarket websites have recipes.

This is no quick fit jab because unless people eat a healthy diet and cut out high cal and fatty foods they will only lose a little weight. This jab is an appetite suppressor . How many people carry on eating when they are full . I know the old me did .

I know someone where I used to live had a gastric band fitted they didn't lose the weight they should have because she liquidiser cream cakes ,melted chocolate so she could still have all the high cal foods she wanted and made herself sick and used laxatives to try and lose weight without putting the work in.

Like any drug there will be side effects to this jab. And celebs who have lost weight using it got paid to use it. It's like celebs who lose weight by doing weight watchers they get paid for doing so.

I made myself morbidly obese but then made myself lose the weight. Still battling to lose the stone and bit but if it takes me another year or 2 I will make it in the end.

We here all know there is no quick fixes to lose weight . It's hard work and flustrating but we have eachother for support. And the main thing is not to stop trying.

NanKate Wed 08-Mar-23 08:54:11

Whiff I so admire how you have lost weight by sheer determination. I’m in two minds about the jab.

Doodledog since I was forced to reduce my thyroxine by my doctor I have put on some unwanted weight. I am now seeing a consultant who has agreed not to reduce them anymore as I said I would take responsibility for my own health.

I suspect many of us pears/apples will have a lifelong battle with weight, but at least we have each other for support and I feel without you all I would have got a lot bigger, so thanks. 👍

Doodledog Wed 08-Mar-23 08:15:56

Many, if not most illnesses and medical conditions are lifestyle related one way or another though. I have no problem with quick fixes if they save lives (or improve them). The cost will be more than covered by the taxes paid on the sorts of food that cause obesity, as well as on other risky behaviours (smoking, drinking etc). Maybe a course of classes on diet and exercise should be a condition of getting a prescription though. I also think that if the government is serious about the ‘obesity crisis’ they could subsidise the cost of healthy options and run a series of public service ads with simple recipes for things like soup that people could make very cheaply. Recipe cards could be given out with prescriptions or on tv and online ads.

I think that would go a long way, but the trouble is that people like me are fully aware of how to eat cheap and nutritious food (and a lot of the time I do) but I’m still overweight. Some of that is because of my thyroid and some because of asthma-related lack of exercise, but most is probably just because unhealthy food tastes good grin.

I am making an effort with that though, and doing a 15-minute strength workout twice a day. It’s not aerobic but if I build up muscle strength I should be able to move about faster and build up lung strength as a result. That’s the plan, anyway. I’m not going to weigh myself but measure success by how well my clothes fit (they are tight just now, and three sizes bigger than I’d like).

Whiff Wed 08-Mar-23 06:49:56

GPs are going to be over run with people wanting the weight loss jab. As people will see it as a quick fix and they can carry on eating as normal and lose weight.

Before my weight loss journey I was in the morbidly obese category and had been for decades but knew there is no short cut to lossing weight.

It makes me so annoyed that money has been wasted on developing this which could be better spend on new treatments that are not of a person's own making.

I was morbidly obese because I over ate. Not through any medical condition . I know there are some medical conditions which can make people obese but again they can be control if the person stops eating to much.

There are no quick fixes to losing weight it's hard work .

Just needed a rant.

Thanks Whiff

luckyrose62 Mon 06-Mar-23 16:22:12

I was thinking about fat less fruit cake just the other day Also some good ideas there thanks. I have had a weekend of a couple of meals out so don’t expect to lose any this week.

Whiff Mon 06-Mar-23 06:00:26

Shirley well done with the pound loss. I am 64 started my weight loss journey in my late teens hence the faddy diets. Well remember having slimming pills from the doctors years later found out they contained amphetamines no wonder I lost weight but felt loopy. 😜

Shirleyw Mon 06-Mar-23 03:55:09

1 lb off this week, could of been better.

Oh yes whiff PLJ, lord that was some years ago lol, I too tried that before meals….never made an iota of difference for me 😅

VioletSky Sun 05-Mar-23 20:40:04

I've not managed another whole pound yet but soon hopefully

Whiff Sun 05-Mar-23 16:03:34

Four it's a loss and that's the main thing. And you haven't given up . We all just keep plugging along.

TillyTrotter always fall asleep in front of the TV when been with my grandson's. No short sleeves for me with my flabby arms 3/4 if not full sleeves no matter how hot. 😊

fourormore Sun 05-Mar-23 11:29:20

Last week I was irritated because the scales stopped 0.2 before 2lb lost. Somehow 2lb seems so much better that 1.8lb doesn't it! It was a loss though so I was happy.
Teach me to be irritated - this week I ONLY lost the 0.2lb!!!
Slow but sure - at least it's downhill and we will all keep going!
'Well done vibes' to everyone who has lost - 'Don't give up vibes' to those struggling flowersflowersflowers - and extra flowers for those like Luckyrose who are finding it hard to get motivated. Oh how we have all been there grin

TillyTrotter Sun 05-Mar-23 10:22:30

Your little GS’s sound full of energy and fun Whiff.
I am expecting to see a gain but have stocked up with apples for snacks and have not bought crisps (always a downfall for me).
I think you will be glad of the low cal hot chocolate drink as it is going to be a chilly week ahead.
Keep going everyone. Short sleeved days are ahead.

Whiff Sun 05-Mar-23 10:14:52

Well another week gone by. Weigh the same as last week decided this week to cut out my yogurt and fruit pud after my dinner and have extra low cal instant hot chocolate instead . Hopefully that might do it.

My daughter and grandsons here yesterday afternoon. The tablet increase has started to kick in and can move my knees when walking. Which pleased my grandson's as we could play dodge ball. I have 2 soft small footballs . Mind you it should be called let's hit nannie and laugh as she misses when throwing the ball. The little one is talking none stop now and sings his own little songs. And his brother is full of things he is doing at school. He went as the highway rat for book day..

We'll have a good week pears .

Whiff Sat 04-Mar-23 07:40:54

TillyTrotter it's become a habit to weight and measure everything and write it down and count the cals. First week was the hardest but got used to it. But like I said everyone has to find a way to suit them this is just my way.

I spent decades on fabby diets PLJ before food, cabbage soup diet, only eating green food etc. Even those Carnation food replacement drinks and weight watchers ready meals . Never worked. This suits me and it's the only way I lost the weight.

You will find your way and then it will become a way of life.

TillyTrotter Sat 04-Mar-23 07:21:35

Sorry my first sentence is a bit garbled. I am not long awake 🙃

TillyTrotter Sat 04-Mar-23 07:20:29

Whiff I admire your dedication to weighing your meal basics it takes dedication to the cause of portion control.
Of course my ‘control’ comes and goes - I get distracted - and the next thing I know I’m adding crisps to my lunch and a couple of biscuits to my afternoon cuppa.
But each day we can choose to start anew and it’s never too late.
The tea bread sounds tasty I have always liked malt loaf too.

Luckyrose brilliant 3lb loss. I solved the problem of what to eat years ago when I started on eating this for life. But I live on my own so only myself to please. Because of health problems can't cook fresh meal everyday. So have 50g dry weight porridge made with coconut milk or if I fancy skimmed milk add 20g honey. Don't need the honey with coconut milk. But coconut milk does taste coconutty. Cooked in the microwave.

Lunch is my lentil 150g dry weight and whatever soup the whatever is what veg I fancy lasts 6 lunches. Have it for lunch everyday even on the hottest day. I have found eating hot food slows eating down and keeps you full longer.

Dinner I made enough for 6 dinners either chicken which I shred into small pieces or Quorn mince, chicken pieces or 8 sausages browned and cut into 8 pieces either with pearl barley put in dry from start of cooking 150g or 100 -120 g of pasta last 20 mins. Dished into oven proof dishes and put in the fridge. Soup is in a large lidded plastic box.

My soup I am eating at the moment works out at 104 cals and my chicken stew 155 cals. I only use I large chicken breast. Tonight's portion I have added 35g bulgar wheat which adds extra 126 cals and if my cals are down will add extra veg as well.

I try and stick to 1,200 cals a day.
I do have treats but make sure I count the cals. I don't buy foods I have no control over. But every 2 weeks bake to take to my craft group. Pushing the boat out this week with a very wicked chocolate cake as one of our group has breast cancer and having her op the following week.

Seeing my daughter and 2 grandson's tomorrow so made a fatless tea bread for them. It's very tasty and doesn't need any spread on it. It's requested often at my craft group.
Here it is

225g of dried fruit I like to use a mix of cranberries blueberries and cherries but you can use normal dried fruit. Don't put cherries in for craft group as one doesn't like cherries .

I use a 400ml mug

Half a mug of tea I use 3 tea bags of Assam tea or what tea you like but not herbal or fruit tea. I had some winter spice ones from Aldi they where lovely in it. Leave the tea bags in and pour over fruit. Once cold cover and leave over night. Squeeze tea bags and discard.
When I used winter spice bags did need any extra spice.

But if using just tea add teaspoon of mixed spice to fruit .

Half mug of light or dark brown sugar.

Full mug of SR flour

I medium egg

Mix well. Put into lined 1lb loaf tin. Oven temp 160°c 50-60 mins until skewer comes out clear.

Once cold leave at least a day before cutting. It gets sticky think it's the reaction between the fruit and sugar makes it so. Keeps a week if you can resist it. Freezers well .

MayBee smoothies are nice but quickly drank and I found doesn't fill me up. That's why I eat like I do. Salads and sandwiches are also eaten quickly. I think eating hot food slows you down and fools your stomach into think it's eating more than you are. Well it works for me.

But everyone has to find their own way.

luckyrose62 Fri 03-Mar-23 10:57:44

Thanks Whiff I did have weight loss at my first sw weigh,in 3lb. The trouble is I keep waking up thinking what shall I eat today and then getting low mood I think it’s more the thought of writing it down for the consultant. You are all a great inspiration to me

MayBee70 Thu 02-Mar-23 21:47:59

I’m eating healthily but still far too much. I make smoothies that are just concentrated calories! I still haven’t been to the gym because I’ve been waiting in for a builder to come and give me a quote for some work but he hasn’t turned up. Desperate for some warm weather but I think it’s getting colder!

SachaMac Wed 01-Mar-23 13:16:42

Hi everyone, I agree TillyTrotter it is bitterly cold, I have just been a walk with my dog and was pleased to get back for a hot drink. I have been up to Scotland for a few days and it wasn’t as cold there. I have not really followed any plan whilst away but had some delicious food including porridge at breakfast and didn’t feel the need to keep snacking so hoping I’ve not fine too much damage, will weigh in at the weekend. Ive just set my soup maker going with some veg that needed using up so I’ll have a healthy lunch ready in no time.
Lovely to see signs of spring in the garden. Have a good week all.

TillyTrotter Tue 28-Feb-23 10:33:54

It does give a satisfied feeling which I liked, and will try and keep it going.
How is everyone doing this week? It is so cold again and that is when comfort food beckons to us.

Whiff Sun 26-Feb-23 19:03:14

Tilly bet you felt a million pounds . I know it's supposed to be dollars but I am English. 😊
