On 08 May 2018 I started this thread for those who wanted to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Many people have joined up and many pounds lost and a few gained.

We now have a small band of ‘regulars’ called Pears and Apples who have joined our ranks and they have brought new ideas and support. Many thanks girls what would I do without you all. I am so grateful you have stayed so loyal and been such good friends to us all.

Do join us the rules are simple.

Choose your own style of diet plan.

Check in regularly with a report of the highs and lows of the diet.

Have an occasional binge but get back on the wagon ASAP.
Pass on any useful diet tips.

So for example I started calorie counting with the NHS Diet Plan. I now eat what I like but make portion control my way of life.

You have nothing to lose, other than weight, on this thread.

Our mantra is - Eat Less for Life.

I weighed myself today and I have put on pounds. I was baking tea loaf and banana bread, fasting each night and having it to break my fast but I ‘ve slipped out of doing the fast. I’ve also got to cut out the bread. I knew I wasn’t getting enough exercise and was eating too much but avoided the scales. I’m also still using up lockdown stockpile food and not planning meals properly.I’ve got the grandchildren two days next week which will be exhausting but it means I’m having to tidy the house. Each time I go away I come back to even more mess; I’ve got to get on top of it. I still can’t walk very well. Some days I’m fine and another day the arthritis is awful, I’m sure it’s down to the damp weather. York is wonderful. Do you have a plan of where to go?

Whiff Sun 26-May-24 10:40:32

MayBee I can't have chocolate in the cupboard unless I have brought it for my baking but only if I use it straight away. If I buy it a few days before I can hear it saying eat me you have time to buy another one. Which I have done in the past. Ice cream is a big no no in the freezer as it will go in a day. Once brought a pack of small tubs intending to eat one a day . Yep eat all four the same day 🤦.

Hope your ears have been burning my talking about how wonderful you and your partner where when we met on my holiday and what we did. Oops forgot your lovely dog.

Got the travel bug so booked to go to York in September. And already decided on a couple of things to do so will get those booked this week.

Glad to say lost half a pound so back to my pre holiday weight. Just need to keep going and get more off.

Brought some new scales. I couldn't read my old ones without my specs and because I wobble more need a larger area to stand on. Still had Slater. I asked my daughter if she wanted my old ones but said no . Not putting that pressure on herself. She's slim and does boxercise twice a week plus running around after my grandson's.

My window cleaner painted my fences Monday and Tuesday. Then it rained Wednesday but finished them yesterday and painted the gravel boards and still had some masonry paint over so gave my bungalow another coat on the masonry bits. He painted it in the autumn. My fences look like new. My gardener starts this week. Had to admit defeat even though my garden is small I can't weed like I did lack of strength and not as stable on the rocks anymore. But will still potter and grow my veg .So my bungalow will look like new outside.
Raining heavy today.

Hope everyone has a good week.

Nanna Kate, Glad you had such a lovely time at your concert. You are very good at not having snacks, I must say I wouldn't count 2 fingers of Kitkat and sharing a Pimms as straying off an eating plan. This probably explains why at my weigh in this morning I hadn’t lost an ounce. When I stray it’s to eat a whole bar of biscuits or chocolates, I can’t have them in the house.
Whiffs holiday and yours Shirley makes me want to do something. Glad it was so good for all of you.

This happened to me last night. When I travel back to my house from my partners I tend to eat too much in the car ( I don’t drive his car and it’s a long journey). So I resolved to eat exactly what I would eat on a normal day. Which I did and felt much better for it. However, I had a packet of digestive biscuits in a bag. The dog woke me up in the early hours of the morning needing to go out and I decided, half asleep, to have a biscuit. Of course, being me I couldn’t stop at one and now I feel awful again. Post lockdowns I’ve actually been able to restrict myself to eg three biscuits or just one packet of crisps but every now and again ( usually when I’m tired) the old habits come back. I still can’t have things like a box of chocolates in the house.

SparklyGramdma ouch slipped disc that's painful. Welcome to the fruits . NanKate some time ago called it eating less for life instead of dieting which is a better way to things of it. Remember everyday is a new start and it's a marathon not a sprint. Took me decades to realise that.

I can sympathise with you as I did something no idea what to my back yesterday not as bad as slipping a disc but very pain and so annoying.

Hopefully I can still go to my sit fit class tomorrow but will have to see in the morning how I feel. It's the Brain Charity events day Wednesday and planned on going . Went last year even though I had sciatica I have been so careful as I didn't want to go with an injury this. But will have to see if I can go . With age we are supposed to gain wisdom someone must have my share 🤣🤣🤣🤣.

Anyway lost 3.5lbs of the 4lb I put on my hols. Every cloud and all that.

Shirley glad you had a good holiday and didn't put much on .I did joke with my daughter next year I will go to Norfolk as it's flat she said do you know how far it is. I live in the north west . It took me just over 5.5 hours to get to Berwick upon Tweed. That's my limit travelling on the train.

NanKate glad you had a lovely time at the concert . My mom loved a Pimm's I know there used to be various bases but thing there is only 1 or 2 now. Did it come with ,lemon ,orange and cucumber slice ? Pushed the boat out with that kit kat 😁. Glad you are back on track.

Allsorts look at this way shows you can maintain a weight just not the one you want. But look on it as a plus.

Very hot here again . Getting my fences painted Monday and Tuesday. Plus 12 bags of compost delivered Monday but won't be planting any of my seeds until my back is back to normal whatever normal is with me 🤣.

Keep hydrated have a good week all. 🥵

SparklyGrandma Sat 18-May-24 07:57:14

Thank you NanKate for starting these threads. I am an Apple and hope to loose 5 - 7 kg. I recently slipped a disc leaving me in pain and lying down a lot to calm it down.

I am trying to diet by smaller portions with fruit and veg each day.

What a lovely time Whiff you had with Maybe on your hols. So good that the hotel met your needs. A holiday to truly remember 👍

I have an admission to make to all you lovely Pears. On Thursday we went to an outside concert to see one of my favourite singers Van Morrison. It was great. However during the concert I broke my rule of not eating anything after my evening meal until breakfast the next day that’s 14 hours. I ate a two finger kitkat and shared a Pimms at the extortionate price of £12 😳 It may not sound much but I know the slippery slope for me is just to start having extras and then it becomes the norm.

I’m pleased to say I am back on track but it was a near thing. Snacking is/was my downfall.

Shirleyw Sat 18-May-24 06:38:24

Sounds like you had a wonderful time away whiff, that’s lovely meeting up with maybe.

I’ve been away for a week, Heacham in Norfolk, weather was great so plenty of walking and pleased to say I only put on 2 and a half pounds, that’s good for me being on holiday 😂.

Have a good week all.

To lose a pound a week you need to eat 3,500 cals less a week than your body needs.

Whiff Sun 12-May-24 10:33:32

Morning pears . I want to give a big thank you to MayBee ,her partner and dog. Some may remember when I said I was going to Berwick upon Tweed for my holiday the lovely MayBee said she would be there the same time.

After giving a description of myself via PM at the station I was with the travel assistance helper when I heard my name called. It was wonderful she is beautiful inside and out.

I had already booked my taxi to my hotel . Was able to book in early . And then went for a drink with them and they said they would take me to Lindisfarne the next day. It was lovely and took me to other places. . Wednesday I had a day in Berwick upon Tweed. I had forgotten what hills where like . But had a lovely day and the people where friendly. I had forgotten they would speak with a Scottish accent.

Thursday MayBee and her partner took me to their home it's in a beautiful place and a lovely home. MayBee and me when on a boat and had a 2 hour journey round the Farne islands. It was exciting seeing Puffins and other sea birds and lots of seals . The sea was clam and so clear. It was fun getting on and off the boat but we did it.

I stayed at the primer Inn as it had assisted rooms. And it was big and very comfortable. Staff where lovely and the chef cut my food up for me in the kitchen.

I ate all the things I normally deny myself and much to my surprise only put 4lb on.

Shirley well done loosing the pound. Think to loose a pound you need to eat 3,500 cals less than your body needs. But will check that.

Allsorts don't be so hard on yourself. This will be my third year trying to lose the last stone . Even losing the 7st I am and never will be a slim Jim. Putting weight on is so easy only wished it was so easy to loose. You will find a way that suits you. As you know I weight and count calories. But it's the only way that works for me. With the hot weather you may find you aren't so hungry and just drink more to keep hydrated. My eating habits won't change with the weather as my way works for me and salads don't fill me up.

I tried those diet drinks way back in the 70's/80's but didn't work for me nor did diet clubs. I hated being treated as a naughty child if I put on. But clubs do work for some people.

They way my brother loses weight is to cut all carbs out of his diet. But not for me as I need a balanced diet.

BigBerthal loosing 2 stone over 2 years is the best way to do it . As a quick weight loss I found didn't work for me because if I put on then the weight went back on and more when I stopped counting cals.

Summer wedding lovely have you got your eye on your outfit? You have got time to lose the last bit perhaps you need to increase you exercise and slightly smaller portions . But just keep going . The main thing is not to give up.

That's the lovely thing about this thread people pop in and out and always welcomed . NanKate started this lovely thread it's proves how much people love it and there are no nasty posters.

Will check my facts about the amount of cals to lose a pound . 🤗

Maybe, I understand what you’re saying I feel the same, I’m just so weak with snacks, nuts in particular. So many people on here just get on with despite the occasional setback. If I went a few days without food I would feel very thin although not look it. I must try harder.
Big Bertha, to lose 2 stone in 2 years is brilliant. I know from what others say you do get stuck at times although keeping to a diet, you just have to stick with ut, somehow I never reach tgst stage.
Shirley a pound is good, it’s half a bag of sugar. I think I have 7 bags of sugar to go😬

MayBee70 Thu 09-May-24 07:59:57

Allsorts

I have out on 7 lbs in last few weeks, never had such a rapid weight gain. I’ve been a bit grounded at home with a few health problems and inactivity and comfort eating has resulted in this.
Yesterday all shelves cleared of temptation, big bowl of fruit for when I want to snack , trouble is I never want fruit I eat it reluctantly as it’s good for me, I can eat every green vegetable out there though and enjoy them. I am considering kick starting for just one week on a milk shake diet, I have to get in that frame if mind and go for it so will research today and see which one has most nutrients, I will only do it for a week, no more.

I haven’t got time to say much as going out in a bit but I don’t think liquid diets work. I understand totally how easy it is for weight to shoot up quickly: mine does all the time. But I think it’s better to just go back onto whichever diet is best for you. My reaction in the past was always to try not to eat for a a few days.

BigBertha1 Thu 09-May-24 06:43:37

Hello again. I have been in and out of here but ask if I may come back. I've lost two stone in the last two years but am fining the last half stone the hardest. GD wedding in 47 days! I am using Nutracheck which I am quite enjoying and attending a support group but could do with a bit more. Happy to support others here too.

Hope your having a good holiday whiff, weather bit wet today but hasn’t been bad this past week.

Lost 1 lb, pleased with that.

Allsorts I keep my scales in the same spot in my shower room they are digital Salter ones . I found manual scales years ago gave a different reading depending on where you put you feet.
Thank you for the birthday wishes. You are very special to. Today I am a pensioner. Went to my daughter's fir birthday tea on Sunday they had a birthday banner up and my grandsons choose my birthday cake it was a chocolate caterpillar one. Even had a candle to blow out. This morning my daughter sent a video of them singing happy birthday to me.

Glad to say I lost the 3 quarters of a pound I put on last week .

At sit fit we had to take a tea towel. It was to work our biceps. You had to hold it tight arms out straight and go above your head 12 times. Them same again but had to pulse it for count of 5 before over your head. Then still with arms out straight and tight tea towel twist it left then right like steering a car 12 times each way. Lastly still holding it tight arms out stretched twist from the waist to the left then right 12 times each side. My biceps hurt afterwards but ok today.

No class until 20th bank holiday next week and instructor on holiday on 13th.

Going to enjoy my holiday next week and have a few treats. So expect to come back plus a few pounds. But trying to be good this week and hopefully lost a bit on Sunday.

So cold here today got my heating on for a bit.

Take care everyone.

I weighed myself this morning, I have one day a week when I eat what I like this means I have something to look forward to. I got on the scales this morning and thought I’d lost 7lbs in a week, thought that’s a lot I feel the same, moved the scales out again to check, I hadn’t lost anything, I moved those scales 6 times and it registered different every time, so in truth I don’t know what I am. I think I’m a lot more than I thought as nothing fits me. Those sacked are manual Salter so don’t understand how they are wrong they are quite new. 😬

Go a very special lady on here, you know who you are, Happy Birthday x💐

We all have setbacks Allsorts. I agree with whiff we all keep going on this thread even if we have breaks and our weight rises. It’s life. Just keep going you will get your Eating Less for Life mojo back. 👍

Whiff Fri 26-Apr-24 06:39:27

Allsorts you haven't given up and that's the main thing. Everyone here no matter how many sets backs we have we don't give it. Only wish I had done that decades ago. I don't think those height weight charts have changed since the 70's it's all BMI now. According to the BMI calculator I am still obese . Which I think should be overweight .

It's like shopping for clothes none of the shops have the same measurements for each size. Peacocks I can get away with size 14 tops but M&S it's 16. 16 for trousers in both shops .

But as long as I feel I look good and feel confident I wear what gives me the fit I like.

My brother over did things on Monday and was in lot of pain by Wednesday but rested yesterday and the pain has gone. He can swim and drive on 29th and seeing physio on 2nd. They should be happy with him .
Hope you have a good week Allsorts and everyone else.

Allsorts Fri 26-Apr-24 06:18:55

Hi everyone, I hit a bit complacent, I had lost 7lbs still another 8 or so to go, then I had an Easter egg and ate the lot, gave me my sweet tooth back, in just a few weeks put back on 4 lbs, I just have little staying powers but know many of you and trying again.
NanKate running round with grandchildren keeps you fit.
Whiff you do well keeping on the straight and narrow, you are very determined, your brother obviously the same.
Saw a recent picture of me with one of my grandsons, I was below his should height, I used to be known as tall, now I find I'm classed as on the short side. I still use the height I was fifty years ago to establish what I should weigh, when I go to what I think I am now I need to lose another stone,

Whiff Wed 24-Apr-24 06:20:31

NanKate glad you had a lovely time with your grandsons . My daughter and her boys where here the weekend . They have both grown again. The 6 year old comes to my shoulder and his 3 year old brother just above my waist. They are always taken for being older. Their dad is 6'5" . But they are a joy ..They had been to France for a week so full of things they did.

Shirley well done staying the same . BBQ and birthday cake a wonderful combination. Going to my daughter's on Sunday for my birthday tea. So imagine they would have made me a cake. My birthday isn't until Tuesday and I become a pensioner.

In Merseyside once you reach 60 men and women get a free bus / local rail pass. I was 61 when I moved here saved me a lot of money having it . Yesterday my new one arrived still can use buses and local trains here but now use it for buses in England and Wales not sure about Scotland. All ready for my holiday. Luckily the train strikes are 7,9 and 11th. I travel on the 6th back on 10th. My first holiday in 19 years really looking forward to it. Have some plans but it will depend on the weather for one thing. Going to my brother and sister in law I don't count as holiday as that's visiting family. Didn't realise the 6th was bank holiday when I booked my room in November. But it doesn't make a difference to my travel arrangements. As I need an assisted room going to the premier inn. They have ones for wheelchair users and ones for people like me. Plus very few private hotels cater for the disabled and charged extra if you are on your own . Why I will never understand. At least with premier inn you are charged per room.and always get a king size bed. Having the meal deal breakfast and 2 course dinner works out cheaper.

Put on the three quarters of a pound I lost last week. But when I weigh myself yesterday had lost it . But I only take Sundays weigh in.

Sit fit was fun as usual next week we have to take a tea towel. No idea what we are doing with it . Then no class for 2 weeks as our instructor is going on holiday for a week 13th. So will make sure I put more welly into my exercises at home. Mind you thought I would put on Irish folk songs to do my exercises. When I started marching it was a very fast jig so changed the music back to Abba.

Have a good week everyone. 😊

Shirleyw Tue 23-Apr-24 04:49:13

Morning all, stayed the same this week I’m pleased to say and that’s after a well fed bbq and birthday cake at my daughter’s at the weekend.

Hope your all doing well….wish the weather would warm up a bit more now.
