How often do you weigh yourself?

I do most mornings just to keep tabs, I don’t think I’d call myself obsessive and I don’t stress out if it’s gone up, it just keeps me on the straight and narrow.

What I cannot understand is when I read about ladies who have lost a lot of weight and are delighted to be now be still over 11 stones and they say they are now a size 10 . How can that be ? I read it so often .

I find it odd that anyone should see it as obsessive. I do many things on a daily basis to maintain my health so I age as well as I can, to me it's self care. We have an increasing problem with obesity in the UK and it costs the NHS a huge amount of money as well as damaging people's quality of life. Surely if anyone is taking steps to keep to a healthy weight that's something to applaud? Describing it as obsessive sounds like a put down.

Thanks for replies, glad I’m not the only daily weigher.

Casdon

I can’t remember the last time. If my jeans are tight I cut down - I’ve got a barometer pair with no stretch that tell me, otherwise I don’t think about it.

Me too.

I weight myself every morning, and I don't consider it excessive. It is part of my morning routine; I don't get too uptight if I am a couple of lbs up, but bear it in mind, and keep an eye on it. I am aware that fluid retention can be an issue at this time of year.

Weighing myself is now just a part of my care, like brushing my teeth, drying my hair after a shower, weight can creep up at my age, and a couple of lbs is easier to lose than a sudden, surprising half a stone!

Well done Sallyw. Some may think it obsessive to weigh daily but I get that it’s important to be observant about putting weight on again. Some may not need to, but some people do undoubtedly put weight on more readily than others, regardless of what they eat.

I can understand however if there is a history of an eating disorder best to steer clear of frequent weighing.

Another vote here for every day weigh in. If I didn't do it for a week a couple of pounds would creep in then I have to loose it all o ver again. The daily weigh in keeps me on the right track, if its up a bit I walk more and eat a bit less. Without knowing the daily weight I’d eat too many treats then suddenly there’s three more pounds crept on.Not at all obsessive, just my way to keep the pounds at bay. I have lost 14 pounds in 12 months and would hate to see it all pile back on again.

Every day now. I lost around six stones in 14 months and dread putting it back on. If it does go up a bit it is easy now to get it down. I also still track what I eat. May sound obsessive, but I have always put weight back on in the past. I also still exercise regularly and don’t drink alcohol anymore. Works for me.

I weigh myself every morning - if I've put a couple of pounds on, I cut down on treats for a few days or until I've lost the gained weight. I'm only 5' tall and additional pounds show very quickly, so I do have to be careful and have managed to keep under 8st, which is a 'normal' weight for my height.

I step on my daughter‘s scales every once in a while just to check I’m about right.

My late DH used to weigh himself once a week or so. We returned from three weeks visiting our daughter in the US and, despite eating a lot more than usual, when he weighed himself on our return he had lost several kgs. That was the only symptom he had but was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and died a year later.

I'm sorry, but to me, weighing yourself everyday is obsessive - no matter how you try to justify it.

I haven’t weighed myself in a few years. I haven’t bought any new clothes in that time and everything still fits. So that’ll do me 😊

JamesandJon33 Thu 27-Jun-24 18:04:47

Practically never. I have been on a low carb diet for seven years. My clothes still fit. So…..

SporeRB Thu 27-Jun-24 18:00:04

Sorry, I meant to say I am on a low carb diet, not low calorie diet. Limit the amount of white carb - bread, potato, rice, pasta.

My scales are right beside shower and I automatically step on each morning. Obsessive? Not at all (strange thinking!) but certainly interested. Not worried about an extra lb or two. Invariably comes back off in a few days.

Once a month on the 1st of the month.
Gallbladder disease gifted me a 3 stone weight loss in 2020
(2 stone of it necessary). I have returned to a comfortable weight , healthier than before and want to keep it that way if Poss.
Every day weighing seems a little obsessive to me also (I speak as an ex- teen anorectic) Your weight can fluctuate throughout the day. But hey , whatever gets you through the night.
Don't spiral into excess if you can avoid. We'll all lose plenty of weight after our deaths!!!!!

Happygirl79 Thu 27-Jun-24 17:07:05

Once a week.

Zoe.com (Tim Spector) is great for food information, even if you don’t use their app or follow their programme.
They give informed up to date information about healthy eating for weight loss, and why calorie counting doesn’t work long term.

Norah Thu 27-Jun-24 15:11:29

Every morning when we get out of bed.

I attempt to stay on the straight and narrow, seems to work.

SporeRB Thu 27-Jun-24 15:03:09

Right now, every other day since I am currently on a low calorie diet (again!).

So far, I have lost 2kg roughly 4.5lbs over three weeks so I am very pleased. I still have a long way to go to reach a healthy bmi. I am only size 10, the problem is I am short.

TillyTrotter Thu 27-Jun-24 10:09:22

Every 2-3 weeks. The kilos/pounds can creep up on me.
It all goes round my midriff and thighs and it’s not a look I like so am always trying to keep my weight down.
I am on the cusp of 11 stones and would like to be 10.

Farzanah Thu 27-Jun-24 10:01:28

That doesn’t sound too bad silverlining. I didn’t diet but found its best to readjust eating habits because it’s well documented that diets don’t work, at least not in the long term.

Kate1949 Thu 27-Jun-24 10:00:47

Every day like the OP. I am not overweight and my BMI is 23. However, I have blubber around my stomach and middle which I don't want to get any bigger. If I have a bad day food wise, I try to have a good day the next. It keeps my weight reasonable, although I'd love to be slimmer. I find that this way keeps my weight from going up and up.

silverlining48 Thu 27-Jun-24 09:54:48

My aim is to reduce my bmi by 2, then I would be FAT or more politely, overweight, instead of obese. Happy days!
