Swim wear

I’d like to get swimming again but what to wear? It’s not that I’m fat (just slightly overweight need to shift that last 7lbs but never will) but more that I’m an odd shape.

Think old lady (80) with tummy and love handles.

Been looking at swimming costumes and thinking, no, no, no. Not for me. Any suggestions please before I give up?

Look at Bravissimo, M & S or a sportswear company.

Please do not give up there are so many lovely swimming costumes about suitable for all sizes and ages.

There is so much on the market just now, but mostly on-line. There are some specialist sellers who will ask for measurements before sending, but even this isn't a guarantee of fit.

Lots of people go for two piece ones now, separate tops and bottoms but not bikinis! which are better if you're not an average shape.

I buy mine from specialists anyway since I had a mastectomy, but I'm sure some of them are fine even if you have two boobs!

Many women now wear the body suit type too which cover everything.

Please don't give up- just keep looking and trying them on!

I share your problem. I'm 72 and swim three times a week at the local health club. I used to buy skirted swimsuits from M&S which suited me and were supportive in the boob area. They no longer stock them. Sadly I am fat with wobbly thighs and this style is the only one I feel comfortable in. My costumes have faded over the years and really need replacing. M&S have just got a new style of skirted costume. It's awful, far too low at the front, no support and generally a bad fit. I've tried a few from catalogues but they have the same problems. Sorry I can't offer a solution but I will follow your thread with great interest.

I get Anita from amplebosom.com. They are expensive, but I get them in the sale and they last much, much longer than cheaper ones.
A lot of women at my local pool wear Lands End or Cotton Traders, and team them with Capri leggings.
I don't like 'skirts' which flap about, but don't really care about wobbles and odd shapes - I know folk have much better things to look at than me!

Thanks for these ideas. I’m following them up. Trouble is all I’ve liked the look off are being modelled by … models!

I’d like to see what they look like on someone my shape. I’ve seen a couple that are a possibility so will sleep on it. 💤

What about Lands End? They have skirted swimsuits and even some swimdresses! So many options.

I got some (swimming) board shorts from there and swim tops to go with it, which are good if you don't want to bear all.

I recently needed a new costume for hydrotherapy and bought mine on Amazon, the choice was great. They had plenty with skirts and tummy control although that wasn't what I needed. Have a look you have nothing to loose.

Could you go to swimming pool as a spectator and have a look at what women are wearing and then perhaps you might get the opportunity to ask someone where they have bough their costume from. Or if you know someone who is in a swimming club or regularly swims, they might have some good ideas. I eventually found a reasonable one and therefore bought two in the sale so that I alternate each costume and they seem to last quite well, but it is important to get swimming so I dont know if your pool allows you to wear a t shirt over something, that may feel better for you . Good luck and keep looking as I think you will find the swimming worthwhile

I got my t-shirt style rash vest tops and shorts from Amazon, they cover a multitude of sins 😁

silverlining48 Thu 29-Aug-24 18:52:57

I wear a tankini, a separate top strappy t shirt style, and decent size bottom. Much easier to go to the loo and if the top isn’t too tight, it covers a multitude. Not that should bother anyone.
I am short and overweight but I don’t let that get in the way of a swim. I was in the sea yesterday, it was glorious.

From my experience of Aquafit - anything goes! Nobody is looking at you. Whatever is comfortable is fine.
I have swimsuits from M&S bought over the years. The most recent was £10 in the sale.

BlueBelle Thu 29-Aug-24 19:29:58

When I swim in the sea if I join the wild swimmers group I can assure you there is every size you can imagine short, fat, very large, thin, tall, skinny, lumpy, love handles big legs, small skinny legs old faces young faces and no one cares a dam
I was in the sea yesterday and today after work weather is glorious at the moment

Other bathers may not be watching me but Big Brother certainly is.

Yesterday adverts for swim wear appeared on my mobile - specifically for the more mature laydee. How scary is that?

Anyway for RosieBee this site looks interesting Fullfitall Swimwear.

I like bra-sized ones and also use www.amplebosom.com/
Or
www.fantasie.com/uk/en/swimwear/swimsuits/c/204/

I don't like the skirted ones anymore (though I used to) as I realised they made me look "dumpier" than a regular shape.
I choose a fairly busy pattern now that isn't too dark. It disguises more lumpyness than a plain one!
As I'm not dark skinned a lighter colour background does not make me look so pasty white.

I do swim 3 times a week and they are surviving well.
I make sure I wash by hand after each use.

I hope you find something satisfactory soon.

It definitely happens! After a recent hospital stay everytime I went online I got huge adverts for sharps disposal units, for weeks! Also, Facebook recommended me a friend in "friends you may know" . It was woman who had been in the bed near me. They know, you know!

Actually RosieBee do NOT order from the site I mentioned. I’ve just read their reviews on Trustpilot.

I'd never heard of Fullfitall, so I checked out their website.

Fufitall swimwear also does not give an address on their website, only an email in the contact details. This is their "bio".

About Us
FullFitAll is an international B2C fast fashion e-commerce platform. The team mainly focuses on women's wear, but it also offers men's apparel, children's clothes, accessories, shoes, bags and other fashion items. FullFitAll mainly targets Europe, America, Australia, and the Middle East along with other consumer markets. Its business covers more than 220 countries and regions around the world.

I suspect another Chinese company. Their returns policy is not good and they only tell you the returns address after you order. Terrible!

MiniMoon Fri 30-Aug-24 12:10:01

I bought my swim dress from this company. www.swimwear365.co.uk/womens/swimsuits/swim-dresses/_/N-19Z1z141vjZ1z141vb
It fits beautifully and covers my lumpy bits.

Absolutely right. We grans are getting more canny nowadays.

Definitely! There are too many scammers out there. If its not a well known brand and sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I have particularly unlovely legs, and the rest of me is not exactly beautiful. I decided that, as I didn’t want to show the world what age and Surgery have done to my body, I would buy a. Burkini. Two pieces, a top which covers your bottom and has long sleeves and the bottom part which is like a pair of leggings. Job done, elegant and confident building.

henetha Sun 01-Sept-24 11:10:36

I like tankinis. A separate pair of shorts with a pretty loose top. They hide a whole lots of lumps and bumps.
They are available in lots of shops, online or not.

Overthemoongran Sun 01-Sept-24 11:20:28

Some years ago I was lucky enough to find a Tu skirted costume that I really liked in Sainsbury’s, even better it was in their sale for £8. I bought one, tried it on and went back and bought two more. All my holiday pictures show me in the same costume, people comment on how well it has lasted smile. I go to the pool 3 times a week, the lifeguards must get fed up with watching the same costume plough up and down year after year!

Tanjamaltija Sun 01-Sept-24 11:23:13

Get 2 tops and 2 bottoms and you can mix-and-match and go to the loo much easier, as well, as a bonus.
