Education

We have pooled thoughts on the NHS, how about education?

Many GNs have knowledge and experience here and I have none, but like most of us I have children and grandchildren. I look at the situation with schools in this country and dislike what I see.
Looking on the black side: (1) No prime minister since Blair has prioritised education and since 2010 secretaries of state have not been figures to command respect. (2) The neglect and running down of children’s social care services means that schools have become virtual ‘support banks’ for families in need, with burdens foisted on them that are by no means theirs. (3) Parents seem absolved of responsibility for playing their part in their children’s education, and public respect for schools and teachers seems to be at an all-time low. (4). Many school buildings are in gross disrepair.
There is clearly a link between these points and more could be added. What is on the white side? What is to be done?

Ach, its my guid Scottish education.

Anyway, what would you do to solve your imagined problem, ronib?

Please don't suggest charging individual students fees as I'll know that you really don't know anything about Scotland.

ronib Wed 11-Jan-23 10:21:03

Social inequality is not my imagined problem. For Scotland I often wonder why your population figures are quite sparse and England is very over populated. Surely first step is to encourage your bright students to stay in Scotland although I have to say that England has done very well out of the migration.

I have tried to understand the way Scotland funds degree courses and it is very complicated.

As you say, maybe start a separate conversation?

Because we have big f*** off mountains everywhere confused

ronib Wed 11-Jan-23 11:18:16

Volver are you part of some GN mafia network?

volver Wed 11-Jan-23 11:22:50

confused again....

volver Wed 11-Jan-23 11:23:31

What are you talking about..?

Fleurpepper Wed 11-Jan-23 11:27:33

Ronib, you have got me totally confused.

You were previously talking about someone/a child of yours with high grades not able to go to a Scottish University. Which seemed to indicate that person is Scottish and should be entitled to such a place?

And then you say ''For Scotland I often wonder why your population figures are quite sparse and England is very over populated. Surely first step is to encourage your bright students to stay in Scotland although I have to say that England has done very well out of the migration.''

so the person you are talking about is not Scottish?

Those repeated personal attacks on volver are totally our of order and should be reported.

Of course the person I am talking about is Scottish. She lived near St Andrews.

What do you not understand?

volver Wed 11-Jan-23 11:40:29

She lived near St Andrews.

Ohh, so do I. Maybe I know her.

Not the only person I know in St Andrews! What a nightmare! Joking 🙃

Fleurpepper's not my backup team.

You've got the wrong poster. Check your sources. 🤣

So what category of the forum’s rules does Volver’s comment on the b… F off mountains come under?

Are you surprised that I think you are working with Volver? Please explain

volver Wed 11-Jan-23 12:33:24

I've found Fleurpepper, that there are some posters here on GN, that think if two people think the same was as each other, but not the way they do, then the two must be a cabal.

Best to go and have your lunch, I think. I did.

The language (which is lightened by asterisk) is not against the Forum rules as far as I can tell. Volver wasn't directing the language at you, she was merely describing the mountains. Her comment actually made me laugh out loud even though we have quite different thinking on independent education.

I sometimes find myself disagreeing with Volver (and no doubt Fleurpepper) and sometimes agree with her but I certainly wouldn't think of myself as part of her back up team if I did defend her.

Well let’s just say that I choose not to describe mountains in this way! Yes this site is very Edinburgh fringe… thanks for the comment.

The suggestion that one person is working with another to mislead would be seen, I believe, as Troll Hunting, ronib. Troll Hunting is not allowed.

ronib Tue 17-Jan-23 12:54:13

DaisyAnne you might have gathered that this is the first time I have ever posted on social media. I am completely unaware of the concept of troll hunting. Thank you very much for explaining.

It’s an interesting experience, if somewhat time consuming to be on this site but I have discovered some interesting things.

ronib Tue 17-Jan-23 15:04:25

DaisyAnne are you allowed to be a troll on Gransnet? Using logic only, how can you ban troll hunting if there are no trolls to hunt?

I am not being flippant!

Trolls and Troublemakers

We hope you will find the vast majority of Gransnet discussions genuinely informative, supportive and friendly (even when we all disagree with each other!) Unfortunately, from time to time, all sites are visited by troublemaking "trolls", for whom friendly supportive chat is definitely not on the agenda. (For those who don't know, a troll is someone who poses as someone else in order to cause chaos, fulfil their own perverted agenda, or just for the hell of it.)

If you suspect someone of being a troll, please don't accuse them publicly on the discussion thread (if you're wrong, you could cause untold hurt; if you're right, you'll merely be giving them just the kind of attention they're after).

Instead, please report your suspicions to us (either by reporting a post of theirs or by mailing us at [email protected]) and we'll check them out.

Please bear in mind that we'd rather err on the side of being taken in than of accusing a genuine poster who's in need of support of being a troll.

All above taken from GN's talk Guidelines. Somebody who posts differently to someone else and says something you don't like, is not a troll.

HTH

ronib Tue 17-Jan-23 15:34:41

Volver cheers thanks again.

So it’s okay to post about the Scottish government capping the number of places for Scottish students at universities? I am not pretending to be someone else! smile

volver Tue 17-Jan-23 15:36:41

Of course its okay. As long as you don't mind being told that you're wrong. 🙂
