Hi guys! As the title says, I can’t write an essay properly. I did not take school seriously and my teachers didn’t really care either. I’m now 23 and wanting to go to college, still unsure of what I want to do, but I do need all of my pre requisites, except Comp 1, which I made a C in, and always struggled with essays. Are there any tips you guys have writing essays? Any practice courses, etc. Thanks, sincerely a 23 year who regrets not paying attention in school.

ETA: I did look on Niche to see the school districts overall academic grade, and it’s a D+.

This BBC bitesize page is a useful place to start.

Don't despair. You have plenty of time to catch up. I think what would help is reading a lot. It doesn't have to be "highbrow" but reading a variety of materials will help you with writing. And, as fancyflowers says, online assistance, such as BBC Bitesize, can also help with how to structure more formal writing.

There is no doubt that practice makes perfect. So keep plodding away.

I don’t suppose that I could begin to put together a half decent essay now, after not needing to do so for 20+ years.

You will get there - no doubt.

Are you in the UK?

Have a look at local college prospectuses. Some hold adult education classes, usually in the evening and weekends. I sat my GCSE Maths when I was 62 so there is no upper age limit. Home tutors may be able to help or point you in the right direction. Don't resort to AI. You are perfectly able to reach your ambition of writing an essay by your own efforts. Booker Prize, here you come. Good luck.
