Hi - is it just me - or don't jersey royals taste anything like they used to ?
I have just spent nearly an hour scrapping the little blighters - after spending a fortune on them - only to be disappointed as usual

Yes, they're tasteless if you buy them from most supermarkets, but I've had some lovely ones from a local greengrocer who says he won't stock them when they're too early as they've been over-produced and don't have that lovely Jersey soil taste about them till later in the season.

That's worth knowing.

Thanks for that - I will try again later - no more buying them from 'every little helps'

Try Cyprus potatoes, too. They came into Waitrose Towcester about 5 weeks ago. Actually on holiday there at the moment. I also steam and not boil. Also have Cypriot recipe (spastes) for new potatoes cooked in red wine. Not as boozy as it sounds. They are bashed a little whilst fresh, dried and then deep fried for 3-4 mins. Put seasoning and fresh coriander in pan with little olive oil, then put potatoes in and pour in 1 glass of wine. Cook gently for about 20 mins and keep turning them to stop sticking to pan. Let me know if you try them.

nannachrissie That recipe sounds fab and I am fond of Cyprus potatoes, our local greengrocer will not stock first crops of Jersey's he wait 4/5 wks into season then he only buys them in the boxes that come direct from the growers,he says that they loose their taste if they left open to light in the big supermarkets where they are sold loose, but I must say when you get some nice ones they are fantastic.

I have never been able to beat the taste of Charlotte potatoes. My home-grown ones were disappointing last year, but Monty Don says his earlies were poor, it was the weather conditions , they would break up during cooking, even when steamed.

We get Cornish new potatoes down here in our local greengrocer and they are delicious - won't buy jerseys if these are available. Also if you can, buy jerseys at a greengrocer rather then a supermarket. [and I work for one!!!] as they are better.

Cheshires are nice if you are lucky to get them at the right time, but the best pots I have ever had was up in Scotland when we stayed at a lodge in Dunoon we went to one of those fabulous houses that open up the front lounge as a restaurant and had the most flavoursome moist pots ever I always meant to go back and ask the owner what they where but never got around to it.sad

ameliaanne Mon 30-Apr-12 16:43:29

Cheshires and Pembrokes for me when in season. I could eat a whole plate of them with nothing apart from butter & salt and pepper! Haven't bought Jerseys for many, many years.

Anagram Mon 30-Apr-12 16:44:53

Same here, I much prefer the English varieties. Anglesey new potatoes are delicious, too!

dorsetpennt Mon 30-Apr-12 16:52:30

Anagram when you say English varieties do you include jerseys in that?Might upset a few people otherwise.

Anagram Mon 30-Apr-12 17:23:40

No, I wasn't including Jerseys (Jersey isn't in England, is it?).

dorsetpennt Mon 30-Apr-12 22:49:06

Well part of the UK I guess - although they have a small sort of government - I'm always doing that forgetting that something English is England not the UK. I may sound English but wasn't brought up here and keep getting things a bit awry, sorry.

Anagram Mon 30-Apr-12 22:55:09

That's OK, dorsetpennt! We Brits can get a bit pernickety about our boundaries wink

Has anyone else tried Edzell Blues?

The Channel Isles are British Crown Dependencies. They do not form part of the United Kingdom. The same goes for the Isle of Man.

With regard to Jersey Royals, I wonder whether they are being grown differently I believe that they used to cover them with some sort of seaweed - maybe they have stopped doing that? They definately taste different to how they used to taste

miltonmum Thu 03-May-12 16:52:11

Could never understand all the fuss about Jerseys - overrated and overpriced but perhaps I bought them too early in the season. I'll have to try them again. Love potatoes cooked in many ways.

artygran Thu 03-May-12 20:08:02

Had my first Jersey Royals today. Very disappointed with the flavour, same as I was last year. Agree they are grossly overpriced. Don't think I'll bother again. Pembrokeshire 'tato newi' are delicious, and Cornish ones also.

pompa Thu 03-May-12 20:43:01

Loved the ones we had today.

Nelliemoser Fri 04-May-12 15:38:53

Charlotte potataoes really are the best!!! Specially snacking as cold leftovers, spread with a little mayonnaise and a sprinkle of sea salt. While you are cooking the next meal.

Nelliemoser Fri 04-May-12 15:44:09

I didnt proof read that well. I can spell potatoes. Can anyone tell me how to edit a post. smile
