Bananas!

Want to keep your bananas fresh for a week? If you buy them once a week as I do, you probably find that after a few days, they're black and soggy. So here's what to do. Separate the bunch, making sure that the opening bits at the top stay intact. Then carefully and tightly wrap each banana completely in foil and put them all in the veg box in the bottom of the fridge. You can re-use the foil several times if you're careful.

Prepare to be amazed! Oh and by the way, it will only work with bananas that are firm and unblemished. Also, don't tell me life's too short to wrap up bananas! grin

I'm going to be trying this when I buy my bananas tomorrow specki4eyes. I never put bananas in the fridge so I hope you are right grin.. only time will tell I guess.

Me too. I'm fed up with buying them and finding they've gone speckly and brown within days. I only like them when they're just off green!

I hang mine on a hook in a very cold room. In fact, I have found that many which are speckled on the skin are actually perfectly sound inside.

I think once they go speckled the texture changes and even though they are perfectly ok to me they taste like cardboard.. here's hoping the foil wrap works..

Anagram Wed 02-May-12 22:42:32

Absolutely, tanith - that's exactly it! They don't taste the same once the skin starts to discolour.

I seem to be able to digest speckled bananas far easier than those that are more firm,I am the only one in our house who eats them so I only buy 3/4 at a time.

The starch changes to sugar when they ripen. I prefer them spotty. Mashed into yoghurt for breakfast.
Oh dear - now we have really gone bananas! As if hairy armpits and knee sniffing weren't enough. [hysterical emoticon]

I cant eat green firm bananas, they have to be lightly speckled wink then they taste like a banana

I'm the only banana eater in the house too (unless the DGC are here) and like them fairly unripe, although they often give me terrible heartburn. I'm going to try wrapping them up as speck suggests. If they've gone past their best I pop them in the oven, complete with skins still on, until they're completely black and soft. Cool them a little, peel and serve still warm with a scattering of demerara sugar, a slosh of brandy and a spoonful of cream, creme fraiche or something similar - delicious

I must try this! I have far too much banana bread in the freezer, made when they become over ripe!

I love bananas but my favourite way of eating is cut in half lengthways, and fried with the bacon on Sundays. Bacon and banana is a match made in heaven for me. grin

Bags Thu 03-May-12 08:03:10

Sounds delicious, chrissy! I'm going to try it.

I have a Lakeland banana bag for the fridge. It feels like bubble wrap between the layers and it works a treat. The skins don't always look nice after a week but the insides are perfect.
I love bananas and so do the GCs. We have made 'do-it-yourself' banoffee pie at the dining table with individual flan bases or meringue nests, Carnation caramel condensed milk and squirty cream, a bit messy but fun!. smile

nanachrissy I love the sound of bacon with fried bananas yum yum!

nanachrissy Fri 04-May-12 20:27:05

Yes they are yummy. They must be cooked until they are really soft and the bacon is crisp. wink

I slice mine! Slosh rum over and brown sugar! Microwave for a bit. Then serve with ice cream (home made) cream or ceme fraiche!

Annobel Fri 04-May-12 21:01:30

You don't set them on fire?

jeni Fri 04-May-12 21:04:47

Only accidentally. They really are scrummy, quick and easy! ( but don't let glass know about themgrin)

Just seen Jodie Prenger on TV saying that on the Biggest Loser they used to freeze skinned bananas then put in blender to make an ice cream-like dessert. Apparently it was delicious but healthy.

Annobel Sat 05-May-12 09:26:43

A friend who had to be on a low fat diet used to blend frozen bananas with buttermilk or reduced fat yoghurt. Might just try that.

pollytunnel Sat 05-May-12 09:48:21

I love them the spottier the better..more digestable...I have also done the rum and brown sugar thing under the grill but not often too many calories....banana plain yog and Jordans crunchie will set you up for the day....well it does me....

Bags Sat 05-May-12 11:29:16

Lovely ideas! I'm going to try both the cream and yogurt ones. Will use full fat yogurt though as I've no truck with foods that are made artificially low fat.

Well I have to say so far specki4eyes its worked, I took one of my foil wrapped bananas to eat after my swim this morning and it was perfect, still slightly green and very firm just how I like them.. so its been in the fridge since last Thursday and by now if not eaten they would be unedible to me.. but delicious to some of the other posters here lol.

Thanks for the tip I've also passed it on to my daughters..

Anagram Tue 08-May-12 13:15:19

I've got one in the fridge as well - I'd almost forgotten about it! We've got one of the same bunch left as well (which OH will eat!) so I can compare them. Will do that later.
