I saw, but didn't enter, a garlic restaurant in San Francisco in which everything was made with garlic- including a garlic ice cream.

Nonu Mon 16-Jul-12 19:13:02

OOO Don"t think even I could fancy garlic ice cream, where abouts in S>F> was it ?

I love garlic too. I harvested a really good crop a few weeks ago, currently drying out in the shed....about 3 dozen huge bulbs. I think all the rain helped. smile

Can't remember exactly where, but I think it was either in or near Chinatown.

Love garlic especially when it's pickled yum yum.

Grannylin Mon 16-Jul-12 19:36:23

Best value I've found is to buy garlic in a net of three from Lidl..89p..and they are big!

I don't live far from the Isle of Wight where I believe is the premier garlic farm in England. We love taking the ferry and making a day of things by going to the garlic farm to have lunch in their restaurant or 'cafe' as they like to call it. The food is really good with much emphasis on local food and of course garlic with everything!!
When I can buy cheap garlic I buy a lot of it and bottle in olive oil, ready chopped, so that I can spoon it out when required.

Am I the only one not keen on the way garlic has crept into nearly everything these days? I like it in moderation, but not to the extent of having to pick the cloves out because I don't actually want to chew them...

I have to be careful with garlic, because I work with some people who don't like the smell [although one of then sometimes smells of garlic himself confused]. I therefore feel that a law should be passed making everybody eat garlic all the time so we all smell of it and don't notice it. I also love the smell of wild garlic. Which reminds me of someone telling me years back of going a courting one night and not noticing that he and his girlfriend were romping in the wild garlic [not hay]. Everyone else noticed, though grin.

jeni Mon 16-Jul-12 20:39:03

Yes. You probably aresmile

Anagram Mon 16-Jul-12 21:00:10

sad Or the only one who'll admit to it! wink

In the days before garlic became widely used in this country, I was in an Austrian train with two friends when a portly gentleman got into the carriage. The hitherto unfamiliar aroma of garlic filled the atmosphere to the extent that we thought we'd be gassed. Nowadays we probably wouldn't turn a hair or we would have been consuming it ourselves, but back then, in 1964, it was so alien to us, shrinking Scottish violets.

jeni Mon 16-Jul-12 21:27:27

I've eaten garlic as long as I can remember?

Anagram Mon 16-Jul-12 21:40:30

What, even in the olden days of your youth, jeni? I don't think my parents, let alone grandparents, had even heard of it! grin

eGJ Mon 16-Jul-12 21:41:42

I've been recommended a Garlic Wash.....................no, not for me, but to put on my hostas that are being devoured by snails & slugs!!

jeni Mon 16-Jul-12 21:44:59

I was in Venezia from age 1 1/2 for a couple of years. My parents liked the local cuisine, we always eat Italian!

Anagram Mon 16-Jul-12 21:46:24

That would explain it, jeni!

Grannylin Mon 16-Jul-12 22:21:36

Went on the school French exchange for 3 weeks when I was 14 and ate garlic everyday and have done ever since[smelly breath emoticon]
