kitty

A bit late reading this thread.

Very funny. Do you think the 'Hunt' eat a lot of quorn. smile

My mother used to boast that my great-grandfather hunted with the Quorn. In turn, I used to quote Oscar Wilde about 'the unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable'. She was not amused.

A few (many) years ago,as a supply teacher, I had to cover a Domestic Science class, it wouldn't be allowed these days. The mixed class of 30 kids had all brought their ingredients to make spaghetti bolognese. Two girls working together had brought some sort of meat substitute in powder form and they tipped the whole lot into a saucepan with water and a tin of tomatoes. They had no idea what they were doing ( nor me, I taught French!) and as soon as I turned my back the substitute meat starting growing and growing and billowing all over the cooker ... the class went wild and abandoned their 'cooking' to come and watch! Definitely my worst class ever and completely put me off soya mince shock

Joan! I looked at the links you sent on soya products but is there any proper evidence. ie evidence substantiated by peer reviewed research into adverse effects of soya products. The Scientific American study was not conclusive. but looked at the rather conflicting research.
Optimum choices.com is a commercial company trying to promote alternative products "they would say that wouldnt they."
I would want a lot lot more evidence than that. The worlds press is dreadful at reporting scientific information usually wanting to get a quick headline rather than a full discussion of someones research and the limitations in these results.

Yes, I deliberately put those sites that are ambivalent, because the evidence is not 100%. However it is enough for me not to buy soy products such as soy milk or soy meat substitutes. We all get lumbered with the stuff in bread and other products - try buying bread without soy - very hard to find.

I have heard that poor people in America end up with lots of soy products when they are on food stamps, and there is anecdotal evidence that this is causing early puberty in girls from poor families. Again, I have no proof.

In the end, I prefer natural old-fashioned food: my sister, in France, has a great rule for food - if it has to be made in a factory, or your great grandma would not recognise it, avoid it like the plague. She is a transplant recipient on immune-suppressant drugs and has to watch her health. Every 6 months she has blood tests and they are always perfect. She is the star transplant patient in Paris, and her surgeon is thinking of doing diet tests based on her dietary findings.

When your own life depends on it, you try to get the diet right.
