Banana poisoning! Does it exist??

I eat, I'd guess, 5-8 bananas a week. I love them, they're very cheap, convenient and filling plus Slimming World tell me they're not fattening.

Someone said to me "You'll get potassium poisoning"! Is there such a thing? If Yes, how many is too many bananas? smile

I've done a quick google and I don't think you need to worry until you start eating 20 plus a DAY

FlicketyB Tue 16-Oct-12 16:15:05

regularly

A natural source of serotonin as well smile.

Personally I think bananas are disgusting, but I know loads of people who eat one every day (and have done for years) with no ill effect!

isthereallthisis I hope that's not too many <pushes today's pile of banana skins under desk and hopes for the best>

Unless you have a serious endocrinology disease e.g. renal failure or diabetes, you don't have to worry about eating a lot of bananas.

I go through phases with bananas - usually associate them with dieting! (low-fat yoghurt and banana) shudder at the thought)

I love them too, but only when they're a bit green - as soon as speckles start appearing I leave them for DH, who likes them overripe (good system!)

Just eaten a banana then saw the title of this thread!!! Nearly collapsed!!! However, seems all is well wink

Yer doomed....

jeni Tue 16-Oct-12 16:48:06

If you get cramp a banana day can help!

crimson Tue 16-Oct-12 16:48:08

Association with dieting = cottage cheese sad.

Riverwalk Tue 16-Oct-12 16:55:29

jeni and a gin & tonic!

Greatnan Tue 16-Oct-12 17:00:56

I take one on all my long walks to prevent low blood pressure - plus a bottle of water, of course.

FlicketyB Tue 16-Oct-12 17:15:38

I don't like them either.

Grannyknot Tue 16-Oct-12 17:23:07

ana we have the same system, I like them greenish DH likes them when they are almost overripe. Or for both of us, when they get a bit soft - bacon and banana on toast - yummy. Brown the banana in bacon fat. No diet there! I've never heard of anyone getting banana or potassium poisoning.

jeni Tue 16-Oct-12 17:23:40

Don't like gin!

Nelliemoser Tue 16-Oct-12 17:29:37

I like my bananas barely ripe. I can't stand them in the house when they start to smell.

Riverwalk Tue 16-Oct-12 17:55:13

Jeni well if you don't like gin you could always have the tonic with vodka!

In theory if someone eats enough pineapple it can dissolve their innards. This is because it contains a protein digesting enzyme! [grizzly halloweeny emoticon]
You can harness this in the form of a marinade (if you wanted pineapple flavoured meat - yuk)
GN has gone all chemical. Just been posting about aluminium on another thread.
Oh I do love science.

crimson Tue 16-Oct-12 18:13:02

Oh you've made me think of that poor girl who lost her stomach after drinking that cocktail sad.

annodomini Tue 16-Oct-12 18:22:04

That's OK then. I usually have a banana at breakfast time with yoghurt and Oatibix.
