Do you think I can eat..........

It says a lot about our guilt-ridden and rule-ridden society when having a little wine or a peanut butter butty during pregnancy is regarded as naughty (not to mention pork pies at any time!). It also says a lot about our ignorance about pregnancy when the 'naughtiness' has no discernible effect

I think it was Helena Bonham-Carter, wasn't it, who told interfering busybodies who said she was being immoral for drinking coffee during a pregnancy, to F* off. Good for her.

I do not recall being advised on diet at all way back in 1968, I ate whatever I could keep in my stomach, I suffered with morning sickness for nine months.

My body told me what I could eat - and drink - when I was pregnant. A nice half of best bitter didn't seem to do any harm when pregnant or breast feeding. I was, however, relieved to use pregnancy as a good reason not to 'taste' a neighbour's disgusting home-made liqueurs.

I went off all alcoholic drinks and coffee, together with smoking cigarettes, long before my pregnancy was confirmed so my body was obviously telling me something. However, there were no instructions about not eating unpasteurised cheese, pâté, ham, shellfish an whatever else you can't eat while pregnant these days.

I think the list of banned foods – listeria being regarded as a major risk of some of them – says something worrying about food production these days.

Either that or the fact that we worry too much. What, exactly, is the risk of listeria when pregnant? And how different is that risk from the risk to people who aren't pregnant? If the risk is negligible in the first place (I'm not saying it is; the word 'if' is important there) and not much less negligible during pregnancy, it still isn't a big risk. I know this reasoning is not applied to other health risks we are told about (not by the media, anyhow), so I wonder if it has been applied here.

I agree that one's body does 'tell' you what is not right during pregnancy, to a large extent. It seems to be true that a lot of people are not body-aware though, and maybe that's the real problem.

Bags I think the risk is to the foetus in the case of listeria rather than the mother.

Bags That was pretty much what I thought. Absentdaughter's most recent sprog popped into the world at the end of March and I remember her enthusiasm for tackling smoked salmon, Camembert and pâté in April.

I longed for curry, asparagus, strawberries and pickled gherkins!

You are not alone in your shame, Nanadog! Last night I ate the cooking chocolate......sandwiched between gingernuts ! I'm booking-in to glass's thread again tomorrow!

Shame on you *Marelli' that's far more indulgent that a few chocolate buttons. Besides I'll have to go and buy some more now and that will involve a mile round walk. That should take care if the extra calories. I think you'll have to run a marathon at least!

I cleaned the windows ( just a bit, and not very energetically, either) Nanadog ! That might make up for a quarter of a gingernut!

Put on a record and dance around the room? Perhaps draw the curtains if the windows are clean now?

PS did you hear about absent ironing in front of her window? Seems she sometimes does it in the all together but shhh....

I've put the shopping delivery away. Loaded and emptied the washing machine.

Last time I danced round the room - I tripped and sat on a reel-to-reel tape recorder brought by my sister. ....it did survive!

And I made a chocolate cake with sugary filling and ate it, over a week admittedly, - but!

Well, after we've all been soooooooo energetic, I think we deserve a rest . Don't you?

Reel to reel Alie what year was that?

She brought it in hopes that we could play some old tapes that I still have from the 60s. And we did. Heard an old ex-boyfriend singing and playing guitar! From student days. Amazing that they are still audible. A bit faded, that's all.

But I still can't play the BIG reels, one of which has my grandparents on for a few minutes somewhere! This is a 7" reel not 5".

A thought - any one here got an old player that can play these??????

Not pregnant ,well don't think so anyway,but my guilty Indulgence is salt and vinegar crisps,not any old ones though it has to be mccoys,can get through any packets in a sitting given the chance,to the point of making my mouth really sore,does it put me off does it eck.
Pregnancies in late 70's early 80's no food restrictions that I can recall,I am surprised we managed to bring healthy offspring in to the world,think around that time was probably a nice. Time to have babies,enough knowledge by professionals to help keep you safe,but still a time to enjoy your pregnancies in peace without being given to much worrying informationtotallydifferent to the stories I hear now
