Bags I think the risk is to the foetus in the case of listeria rather than the mother.

Bags Sun 18-Nov-12 11:51:52

Either that or the fact that we worry too much. What, exactly, is the risk of listeria when pregnant? And how different is that risk from the risk to people who aren't pregnant? If the risk is negligible in the first place (I'm not saying it is; the word 'if' is important there) and not much less negligible during pregnancy, it still isn't a big risk. I know this reasoning is not applied to other health risks we are told about (not by the media, anyhow), so I wonder if it has been applied here.

I agree that one's body does 'tell' you what is not right during pregnancy, to a large extent. It seems to be true that a lot of people are not body-aware though, and maybe that's the real problem.

I went off all alcoholic drinks and coffee, together with smoking cigarettes, long before my pregnancy was confirmed so my body was obviously telling me something. However, there were no instructions about not eating unpasteurised cheese, pâté, ham, shellfish an whatever else you can't eat while pregnant these days.

I think the list of banned foods – listeria being regarded as a major risk of some of them – says something worrying about food production these days.

My body told me what I could eat - and drink - when I was pregnant. A nice half of best bitter didn't seem to do any harm when pregnant or breast feeding. I was, however, relieved to use pregnancy as a good reason not to 'taste' a neighbour's disgusting home-made liqueurs.

I do not recall being advised on diet at all way back in 1968, I ate whatever I could keep in my stomach, I suffered with morning sickness for nine months.
I am with Helena Bonham-Carter, nobody's business.

I think it was Helena Bonham-Carter, wasn't it, who told interfering busybodies who said she was being immoral for drinking coffee during a pregnancy, to F* off. Good for her.

It says a lot about our guilt-ridden and rule-ridden society when having a little wine or a peanut butter butty during pregnancy is regarded as naughty (not to mention pork pies at any time!). It also says a lot about our ignorance about pregnancy when the 'naughtiness' has no discernible effect wink

Sbagran Sun 18-Nov-12 10:27:19

Just shows what a farce some of these preachy books are doesn't it Bags
When I had my three way back in 1979, 1982 and 1983 I was instructed to drink extra milk for calcium when expecting No1 - cut out milk when expecting No2 and when I was pregnant with No3, milk was back as an essential and intake should be increased!
My midwife, when I was carrying the two younger ones was also a family friend and when out socially encouraged the occasional brandy and babycham! The secret is surely 'sensibility' - excess of anything wouldn't be good but surely a little of what you fancy ..... grin
Wish we had your 'verynaughtymotherwith exceptionallyhealthykids' emoticon as I am sure so many of us could use it as well!

DD3, as a foetus, loved cranberry-topped pork pies with (whisper!) half a glass of red wine. That's my theory anyhow, and I'm sticking to it.

Oh, and she's a robust, healthy, bright kid. [It's egg quality wot does it wink).

She also demanded peanut butter, when the pregnancy police said you weren't allowed to have peanuts during pregnancy. No-one told me (and I don't read preachy books) until it was 'too late'.... except it wasn't too late confused

Have you tried My Fitness Pal? (loads of info on it on Glass's thread if you haven't!)
I have been using it for about three months and have successfully lost, and kept off, weight! With MFP you don't have to 'sneak' chocolate - you can actually count it into your daily allowance! I am just about to savor FOUR PIECES of dark chocolate that I have included in today's diary so imagine it - Chocolate plus NO GUILT!!! grin yum yum!

When chocolate urge strikes nutella by the (large) spoonful works for me. Or the whole jar.
Loved your favourite diet Gracesmum. I laughed so much the dogs started barking (grin)! (I try to remember to cut the Sara Lee cheesecake into portions before freezing, makes it easier to get at in an emergency)

jO5 Sat 03-Nov-12 13:21:07

gracesmum I like that. grin
