Just been told my cholesterol is rather high - at 5.1! I've refused to consider medication. Was I right?

Ella46 Mon 05-Aug-13 09:31:40

My cholesterol was tested, no idea why, and my doc wrote to me saying it was high (8), but she wasn't concerned as my bp was very good.

I'm not concerned either, and although I don't have cream too often, I have lots of lovely Lurpak on my toast, potatoes etc!

Gotta die of something.

Interestingly enough, my "high" reading of cholesterol (according to my GP) and therefore the need to consider medication, was just over 6. So in the words of the popular song "They told me go on statins, I said no, no, no!"

Now it seems that one (wo)man's high is another (wo)man's low ...

I have to comment here; I was put on statins 2 years ago, but got muscle sbut no chocolate; as I have no cravingsthe night.Doc changed the statin to another one, but then I couldnt sleep at all, and I mean no sleep all night most nights! Horrific. Was a zombie. Tried another statin, but same thing.
I chucked them all away, and put myself on a fat free diet and stuck to it for 12 months. When I wnt back for a test, the result was just the same! 9.2
Doctor put me on a different statin, Atorvastatin; and lordy; it worked!
No side effects and my reading is down to 6.
Ibut no chocolate as I dont crave it or miss it now. occasionally have some cre
aSorry
Making a dogs ear of this...somehow gone back on wrong type line.Anyway, I think you will get my drift! [smiley]

I am very distrustful of statins. When they first came out anyone could just buy them from the chemist. Seems now they are supposed to cure/prevent just about everything confused.

Nonu Sun 04-Aug-13 20:28:10

The thing of it though when and if they do blood tests it shows up !

Galen Sun 04-Aug-13 20:26:20

Won't have mine checked! Family history much more relevant. Went for eye check on Friday. No sign of arteriosclerosis in retinal vessels!grin

Nonu Sun 04-Aug-13 20:11:26

I have now ANA , and agree .

That pud sounds good. Pity I can only enjoy it vicariously.

There was a most interesting article in today's Observer about the epidemic of diabetes and obesity which referenced a lot of research showing a large part of the reason is empty calories derived from corn syrup, and too much fructose in the form of drinks. Quite frightening.

Ana Sun 04-Aug-13 19:59:09

Have you read my post, Nonu? I agree that statins are often not the solution I think that prescribing them willy-nilly is storing up trouble for the future.

Nonu Sun 04-Aug-13 19:56:27

I repeat , "not too sure about it not mattering"

As far as I can tell if the cholesterol gets too high , they put one on Statins , and from what I have read and heard that is a path to "Hell".

Bags Sun 04-Aug-13 19:37:02

I'm sure. Don't worry about me, nonu smile

Nonu Sun 04-Aug-13 19:35:29

Not too sure about it not mattering ?

Heyho

Bags Sun 04-Aug-13 19:11:40

I've no idea what my cholesterol levels are, nonu, and my GP has never shown any interest in it either. Ergo, methinks, it probably doesn't matter.

Ana Sun 04-Aug-13 19:10:27

I think the medical profession is erring far too much on the side of caution these days. Some people have a naturally high cholesterol level and putting everyone above a certain 'number' on statins can create other potential health problems. OH has never been so unfit since he was put on them.

We don't have cream very often either, nellie, but with some things it's just right. The berry soufflé with cream is an entire meal. Three eggs for two people, three handfuls of berries, large dollops of cream. The high protein, high fat meal is very satisfying without being heavy and it keeps you going for a long time because the proteins and fats take a long time to break down. None of your dodgy blood sugar spikes and insulin reactions with this meal!

Besides, it's yummy.

Nonu Sun 04-Aug-13 19:08:57

I for one , certainly would !

Nonu Sun 04-Aug-13 19:06:30

Think one should take note if ones cholesterol are getting high !!

Nelliemoser Sun 04-Aug-13 18:53:33

I am fat defiant as well. I don't eat cream very often but I don't deliberate skimp. I had plenty on holiday last week. I love cheese and full fat Greek yoghurt.

Bags Sun 04-Aug-13 18:49:04

Wish you were here, gknot! What fun! [creamy fruity slurp emoticon]

Grannyknot Sun 04-Aug-13 18:26:47

that should be 'I am also a fat defiant'.

Grannyknot Sun 04-Aug-13 18:26:25

Bags am also a fat defiant. I don't worry about my cholesterol levels either**, and if I was there, I'd zing away with you. smile

**This despite the GP doing a complicated risk assessment of my chances of heart disease because of my cholesterol reading (I think I have a 6% chance of getting heart disease by the time I am in my 80s!) <not gonna worry about that now>

Bags Sun 04-Aug-13 17:29:35

She worries about my cholesterol levels, you see. I don't.

Bags Sun 04-Aug-13 17:27:29

I've just invented a new zing drink. Well, it probably isn't new at all, but hey.

I'm making a berry soufflé but it was taking ages to boil down the frozen rasps and blackberries so I just poured them into a sieve and let the juice run out.

Then, while the soufflé was cooking I whipped up some double cream to have with it. There was some cream left so I wondered, and experimented: a wee dash of concentrated berry juice (no added sugar) in a shot glass and topped up with runny double cream is Zingtastic and smackeroo delicious smile

Jingle's away so she can't tell me off about the cream.

Time to check the soufflé.

Happy suppers, folks!
