swedes

does anyone have any ideas what to do with swedes besides mash,my family do not like them and i keep getting them in my veg box,whilst im not keen myself i would like to do something differant with them besides putting them in a stew or trying to make them taste better as a mash confused

Cut them in half and throw both halves away! I hate swede!

Can you not tell the veg box supplier of your intense dislike of swede and ask them to substitute them with something else! Or swap them with your neighbours for another more acceptable veg. Good luck!!

I mash them with carrots or parsnip or all 3 depending on what I want to use up, at least it varies the taste and it freezes well.

Dice with other veg - carrots - add barley and any kind of pulses and use for soup. I went for lunch in the training restaurant in a college where I worked. On the menu was 'rutabaga' which we thought sounded rather exotic. However, when we asked what it was, the waiter had to admit that it was... swede. Disappointing!

Put them in soup or stew. Can't be beaten with haggis and champit tatties.

I've got a recipe in an old cookbook where you layer it in a saucepan with bacon slices and cook it very slowly for a long time. Add 2 tablespoons water. Swedes cook in their own juice and blend with the flavour of the bacon. You need to start it early as you cook it very gently.

Mash with carrot, onion, garlic and butter. Or tell them you don't like them.

I think they do need salt, I know we have to cut down, but taste much better with some.

Or sliced in a hotpot? Layer with carrots, onions, potatoes all sliced, with the lamb in layers not just at the bottom. The flavours blend.

I think they are quite nice in a veg curry but I love them mashed with potatoes and butter and plenty of pepper. They also work as an addition to potato in a cottage or shepherds pie. How can you not like them? Mmmmmmmmm grin

I actually like swede. confused

I like it boiled and mashed with butter and it freezes well so boil two at a time.

I also like it par boiled, cubed and mixed with cubed parsnip and butternut squash covered in honey and roasted with my roast spuds. Sometimes I might throw in towards the end any peppers, or corgettes that need using up.

Rutabaga smile...never liked them.My mother would just cube it and boil in a small amount of water in a skillet.

I had a tip from a friend who said that if you roast swede rather than the usual boil or steam brings out the natural sugars making them far taster. He was correct. Last Sunday we had roast swede with our dinner and even my swede hating son enjoyed it.
I must admit I love swede which ever way it's cooked

I like swede. My brother in law introduced the family to bashed swede and carrots one christmas years ago. It is now a family tradition, no christmas lunch is complete without it. Why have we only recently learned that roasting vegetables is a good thing? I agree with whatsgoing on, it brings out the sweet flavour.
I enjoy swede in all the variations described above. It's one of the joys of winter

Good tip for cooking swede, we call them turnip up here, I love it, use in soups, roasted, boiled steamed with other root veg.

If you find it difficult peeling and skinning, top and tail put on a plate whole and cook in the microwave time varies on size, then you just need to scoop the flesh out of the middle... much easier.

Oh, good idea glass. I cook sweet potatoes/pumpkin for my dogs in the microwave. (dog folks will no doubt understand why I add this to the dogs diet, non dog folks, honestly, be glad you don't )

Soup or roast with other root vegetables.
Don't understand the "I don't like ", we used to eat swede raw while mother was preparing lunch.

Love swede. Mashed, roast, in soups, stews, veg bakes. Have even used it in cakes.
