cheese on toast!

Some lovely ideas on here for me to try, must admit now that I have never tried Worcester sauce [on anything] not sure why.But now I will.Is cheese on toast a British thing?

It's a long time ago, but I remember in school reading Treasure Island out loud in turns, and Ben Gunn [ the shipwrecked man who spent years on the Island] saying 'I dreams of cheese, toasted mostly!' It made us all laugh at the time, but now I can see why he said it, such a simple but heartfelt yearning for home.Go and make yourselves a delicious slice of it right NOW! Golden and bubbling.

Yes I've heard of the cheese and ale on toast henetha. Just bought some spring onions to try with the cheese, got to have worcestershire sauce on it though.

What is Welsh rarebit exactly? I know there are different recipes, but DM used to melt the cheese in a little milk then add beaten eggs, stir and serve quickly as soon as lightly scrambled, on toast, like a very cheesy scrambled egg. That's what we called Welsh rarebit in our house. With W.S. of course.

Our children loved "cheesy strangled eggs" . So many dishes are improved by adding cheese, e.g. sprinkled on spag bog, sprinkled on mashed potatoes on shepherds pie, any pasta bake, the list is endless. I have a very assertive consultant who tells me I'm only allowed a small piece of cheese a week, "as a treat". I don't always follow her instructions, but I have cut back on the amount of cheese I eat. I also love Wallace and Gromitt - cheese theme going on here

I wasn't sure whether to post on this post or the nostalgic food one.

My father was a really good breakfast cook. On Saturdays he would cook toasted cheese on bread and butter, deliciously soggy. The rest of the family had their breakfast in bed at weekends. Like my father I preferred breakfast at a table and the two of us would sit there quietly and companionably.

Just to be different. I'm going to devil some kidneys tomorrow .

That's what I have for supper every night lately. We had loads of tomatoes which I stewed down and froze in plastic bags, and I spread this under some grated cheese on the toast. Then grill.

Sounds nice triciaa bit like pizza. Galen kidneys?Shudder.The devils work indeed!

Love kidneys, liver, heart, black pudding (blood) but draw the line at brain and gonads, tried one or t' other once and didn't like it.

So...do you toast one side of the bread then put your topping on the untoasted side or - as one of my in laws does - toast both sides then grill again with topping?

The second option. Otherwise, the untoasted side goes soggy!

My favourite is 'Pizza Toast.' Toast one side of bread. Turn it over and slightly brown. Place slices of tomato and herbs on the toast and grill briefly. Place grated cheese (find Leicester the tastiest) on top and grill until melted. I also often add a small amount of pickle . Very quick and filling .

I love cheese on toast. Just bread and cheese under the broiler. I'd starve before I'd eat cheese on toast the way you guys eat it!

a little butter,dash of garlic powder and shredded cheese piled on...how's that?

This is agony! It's my fault after starting it but I am supposed to be on a diet.I am salivating just reading the posts.

If the topping is cheese only it doesn't go soggy. Simple & delicious with black or lemon pepper.

I can see that it would with the ale/sauce options though.

I am on a diet as well, but had cheese and tomato on toast for lunch before I went out.

I had plain cottage cheese on a ryvita with chopped cucumber, actually it was very nice. So I had another one.

Mr Iam does a mean dish with sliced potatoes, onions and seasonings, topped with a chunk of camembert and baked in the oven. It's wonderful comfort food and any runny cheese does the trick. He usually makes a large, very colourful and tasty salad to make it a bit of a healthier dish.

rosesarered, we have similar tastes. Mine is marmite rice biscuits, quark and cucumber, my usual breakfast. But cheddar cheese on toast is still the ultimate comfort food.
