Tonight we had Chicken Kiev with Lyonnaise potatoes. I have to admit the CK was not made by me but a local butcher whose ready meals are really, really good but I did make the Lyonnaise potatoes myself and I know I shouldn`t blow my own trumpet but it was a good meal

Ann we are not too keen on gnocchi but went with paprika chicken and rice. Persuaded DS1 that he would like lamb keema and yet more rice on Wednesday!

What is everyone having tonight? We are having roasted aubergine, tomato and chickpea tagine from my new birthday present recipe book. It sounds delicious- hope it tastes the same!

Waitrose ready meals bought on the motorway because we were very tired after a day with DGDs! grin

NanKate Tue 23-Sept-14 21:16:38

We thoroughly enjoy the Waitrose meals - they do a lovely open style ravioli with plenty of tomatoes and herbs. It comes in a yellow cardboard type dish and is ovenproof. I think the company who makes them is Charlie Bingham, coupled with a nice cool glass of white wine it's a perfect meal.

jamsidedown Tue 23-Sept-14 21:55:41

Ooh yes, I've had that and it is lovely - I like the fish pie as well.

Absolutely stick to the ribs dinner tonight as we had DGC with us.
Boiled potatoes, grilled butcher quality sausages and vegetable roll, Heinz baked beans with a dash of Worcestershire sauce (and a sprinkle of parmesan for the adults). With butter on the potatoes smile

I wonder is vegetable roll particular to N. Ireland ??

Flowerofthewest Tue 23-Sept-14 23:17:30

Taste the Difference smoked salmon roasted in foil with sweet chilli sauce, in a wrap with salad and served with saute potatoes in Olive oil. (Had to use them up somehow)

coolgran65 never heard of vegetable roll even though my dad was from Belfast! But there again my mum was from England and she did the cooking - what is it?

Coolgran65 Wed 24-Sept-14 00:37:09

Jamsidedown - vegetable roll is made using sausage meat, onions and leeks.the butcher puts it all together like a fat sausage in a casing and it's sliced to be a burger shape. It would be used in a fry up or grilled, I cook it on the George foreman grill.

Family coming home from abroad for a visit always want a vegetable roll fry up, and of course the local Tayto cheese 'n onion crisps.

I have hospital this afternoon so have made yummy shepherds pie, and will get DH to bung it in the oven when I leave to come home , I love shepherds pie more than steak !

jamsidedown Wed 24-Sept-14 14:07:40

Sorry susieb755, not a meat eater so steak or shepherds pie leave me cold - although I do enjoy a nice bit of fish!

Glad I saw this post as it reminded me to take the prawns out of the freezer for a prawn Thai curry. Not sure yet whether it will be green or red.

Thistledoo Wed 24-Sept-14 14:28:00

We'll I have just put on a venison sausage casserole. Freshly made sausages from our local estate. Loads of veggies and a yummy oxo and red wine gravy. Better than last night, burned fish fingers chewy sprouting broccoli. Complaints all round.

Trying to deplete the courgette mountain, so tonight will have courgette bake layered with tomatoes, onions and mozzarella - and some of the potato mountain, roasted I think.

NanKate Wed 24-Sept-14 16:03:16

You make courgette sound almost tasty Jam.

Ravioli, mixed salad, followed by baked apple and low fat Elmlea. We know how to eat in the Thames Valley you know. grin

jamsidedown Wed 24-Sept-14 17:43:11

NanKate at this time of year there is always courgette surprise - it's a surprise it's not courgettes ...ditto runner beans!

Grannyknot Wed 24-Sept-14 17:48:06

Pork ribs slathered in marinade and cooked in the slow cooker. I'll probably crisp them up in the oven, served with oven chips (po-tah-toes from the garden); the beetroot relish I made yesterday (beets also from the garden); and a green salad with tomaytoes (the latter from the garden!).

Cake-in-a-mug each with Bramley apple (also from the garden).

It's a treat dinner tonight smile

Keema curry with plain rice and pickle!

NanKate Thu 25-Sept-14 12:53:24

Kitty as you are the curry Queen in my eyes having introduced me to the great Spice Tailor range, can you now give me a description of a Keema curry, never heard of it ! I have had a sheltered life grin.

I read somewhere that Balti curries originated in Birmingham not India - anyone know the answer to this please ?

jamsidedown Thu 25-Sept-14 15:57:47

Nankate having lived to the East of Brum for 14 years I can confirm that the Balti did originate from there. I have spent many a happy hour in one of the restaurants in what is known as the Balti triangle. One of the great things about them is that although most if not all are unlicensed, they have no objection to you taking in your own alcoholic drink - some actively encourage it as one relative or another may well own the corner shop next door! This makes for a really cheap night out - recommended!

NanKate Thu 25-Sept-14 16:29:31

That's interesting Jam about the Balti restaurants.

I was born in Handsworth Wood in the 1940s. You said you come from the East of Brum and on your profile the west of Brum confused. I know both sides even though I left when I was 11.

jamsidedown Thu 25-Sept-14 17:20:02

Nankate whoops confused I can't find an icon for embarrassed! It should read East side. I lived in a village called Whitacre Heath, near Coleshill - do you know it?

jamsidedown Thu 25-Sept-14 17:21:48

Nankate just checked out my profile, it says West Midlands so that covers all sides I think grin

Great dinner tonight - M&S dine in for 2 for a tenner, complete with bottle of wine!

hildajenniJ Thu 25-Sept-14 19:27:30

Last of the butternut squash soup and a ham sandwich, made with lovely fresh tiger bread.
