Tonight we had Chicken Kiev with Lyonnaise potatoes. I have to admit the CK was not made by me but a local butcher whose ready meals are really, really good but I did make the Lyonnaise potatoes myself and I know I shouldn`t blow my own trumpet but it was a good meal

I'm being totally lazy to-night and OH is having what's left of yesterday's scouse with beetroot (always better the second day) according to him,and I'm having Morrisons Chicken Korma with a pot of tri-coloured rice all on offer when I did my shop yesterday,so will just wait for the microwave to ping !!

Venison is almost a "super food" low fat, low cholesterol, high vitamin B and either potassium or magnesium (can never remember which!)

Those of you who love natural British woodlands might be interested to know that they are under threat, mainly because the proliferation of deer, which have no natural predators. This means that saplings of native trees are getting eaten by the deer, if you have any Forestry Commission land any where near you, they grow pine type trees for timber but the native trees are not doing very well!

Add the fact that venison cannot be intensively reared or "farmed" therefore they have a very good quality of life (more than can be said of some more commonly eaten meats) and I feel that eating more venison would have a positive effect in several ways.

I know that there is this "you can't eat Bambi!" feeling, but I used to keep a flock of 50 ewes, and believe me there is nothing more enchanting than seeing a bunch of week old lambs bouncing about and playing, but you give them the best quality of life that you can, and then you eat them.

Why should deer be any different?

And venison is third on my roadkill list. It's a bugger trying to get the antlers in the recycle bin. Our binmen are used to finding pheasants in the food bin, I never pluck them, just take the breast & legs off.

Around here people cut the heads off and leave them by the side of the road. Our favourite is hare. I had never had it until we came up here. I would love to nab a deer though.

Oh dear.....

I do all the cooking these days as my wife is unable to stand unaided. Tonight's dinner will be beef and beer casserole. In the past I have cooked this from scratch, but then I discovered Sainsbury's own brand Beef and Ale Cooking Sauce! So a pack of Asda Diced Beef, browned in the frying pan then in the casserole dish with the sauce for about an hour-and-a half. Aunt Bessie's Duck Fat Roast Potatoes and some fresh broccolli. Job done!

I'm trying out a spice tailor rhogan josh. Not sure about this as I normally cook curries from scratch. But just feeling lazy

Roast shoulder of lamb, with usual veg and dried spiced fruit salad with bananas and yogurt

janerowena Sun 16-Nov-14 18:09:43

Roast beef, roasted mixed veg, mash and gravy. Comfort food for DBH's cold.

Galen Sun 16-Nov-14 18:25:58

It's smelling good! I'm doing it with neck fillet in the slow cooker and made a raita to go with it and the rice.
Might try more of these spice tailor ones.
Thanks whoever recommended them.

I won't be having anything tonight! I made lamb shanks in gravy with roast veg for a late lunch. I'm afraid I was a real greedy gertie, DH wasn't hungry so I ate the lot bar a few bits of veg. blush

Just about managing to lie back and watch a film now grin

This weeks Dine in 4 £10 was really good .Tonight we had the Gammon Shanks in Orange and Cranberry sauce, very satisfactory.(I'm talking M&S).

I've just had a coronation chicken sandwich.

I made lunch for DH and DS. Beef stew with roast potatoes, mash, carrots, peas, cauliflower and brocolli, and of course yorkshire pudding.
For dessert we had apple crumble, made with the last of our home grown apples and custard. All very yummy, but I can feel the five pounds I lost on the 5:2 diet quietly returning.

annodomini Sun 16-Nov-14 20:04:31

Had substantial lunch out today so have just had a bowl of the leek and potato soup I made yesterday. Very yummy, though I say it myself.

Before breakfasting this morning, I loaded tonight's dinner into my slow cooker... casserole beef, in red wine with onion, garlic, carrot and celery and a pierced red chilli...

I congratulated myself on the excellence of my dinner!

DH is taking more of an interest in cooking and is building up a bit of a stash of recipes. Tonight we had a mixed mushroom risotto. really yummy. He's very methodical and also washes up as he goes along - bliss! smile

whitewave Tue 18-Nov-14 12:25:22

monkfish wrapped in parma ham with crushed fried potatoes, and beans then autumn fruit pie and custard

lefthanded Tue 18-Nov-14 12:51:26

Monkfish wrapped in Parma Ham? Can I come to tea please whitewave! Just me - my wife doesn't like monkfish. (Actually I don't think she has ever tried it, she has just taken against the monkfish on aesthetic grounds. The adult monkfish is, after all, the ugliest creature that the Good Lord ever gave life to).

whitewave Tue 18-Nov-14 13:11:14

good to eat though! I actually think those underground hairless blind rats take a lot of beating although I don't think we eat them!!

NanKate Tue 18-Nov-14 17:32:25

Sausages cooked in caramelised onion marmalade, roasted veg, peas and sweet corn and mashed spuds expertly pulverised by DH. Followed by the remains of the M and S trifle with a small meringue crumbled on top.

vegasmags Tue 18-Nov-14 18:04:47

Tonight I'm having Freezer Surprise. I defrosted something without really knowing what the hell it was. I'm not always as good as I should be about labelling home made stuff that I freeze. Now that the permafrost layer has melted, it appears to be some sort of stew so I have chucked some spuds in the pan and will hope for the best.

70 next month and today was the first time ever we have eaten fresh mackerel. Trust me to find it at the end of the season. Delicious

pompa Tue 18-Nov-14 18:14:43

vegasmags, when we were first married DW worked at a food cannery, she used to get unlabeled tins very cheaply, they were coded and we should have known what was in there. But it did not always work out and we had some weird combinations.

Galen Tue 18-Nov-14 18:18:48

Pompa I'm 70 next month as well. My birthday is the third, when's yours?
