Tonight we had Chicken Kiev with Lyonnaise potatoes. I have to admit the CK was not made by me but a local butcher whose ready meals are really, really good but I did make the Lyonnaise potatoes myself and I know I shouldn`t blow my own trumpet but it was a good meal

Fresh Mackerel

Our fish man gets it really fresh.

Last time he took the innards out, head off, normally I either bake it or fry it, but I recalled, when I was young we went out in our small boat and fished for it using a 'murderer' feathers attatched to hooks on a long line, and if you went through a shoal, you could have 5 fish on the line.

After dispensing the fish round the village, my Mum used to poach them.

I googled the recipes and poached in them in water till simmering.

Water had vinegar, peppercorns, bay leaf, salt

Once the simmer was reached, turn the heat off, and leave to cool.

Memories of the past were so tasty, bone removed easily

A bought toasted pannini.

Also bought some reduced price produce ready in the fridge for tomorrow.
Not quite in the spirit of this thread!

re fish. For some reason my mum only bought mackeral and kippers.
I grew up thinking I didnt like fish much.
When I was married however I discovered all manner of fish, including white fish. Love fish now.

We had the most delicious fresh mackerel when we were on hols in Cromer a couple of months ago, done "panko" style, which is Japanese I think. So I'm going to try this tonight with cod bought at half price smile

Interesting that you soak the fillets in buttermilk before crumbing.

Will serve it with potato wedges and a salad.

Quiche, salad and potatoes followed by baked apple (stuffed with mincemeat) and custard.

Gagagran Thu 20-Nov-14 16:34:00

Mince N' Taties for us - DH's favourite and as he has spent all afternoon clearing leaves from the garden I decided to indulge him!

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 20-Nov-14 16:39:21

I've got some lovely lamb chops in the fridge, but as I have been in bed all day with a rotten cold, I'm hoping they're gonna jump out and cook themselves. #somehope hmm

Marmight Thu 20-Nov-14 17:08:18

Jings flowers Hope your cold is better soon and the magic works with the chops wink.
I am salivating reading about all the scrummy dinners. I am having half a squash stuffed with peppers, mushrooms, tomato and garlic as I am on the 2 part of the 2:5. sad

whitewave Thu 20-Nov-14 17:12:09

Sorry to hear of your cold jing hope today is the worst day and that you feel better tomorrow.

I'm having fish pie, and fruit salad and yogurt left over.

Agus Thu 20-Nov-14 17:13:54

Aw jings poor you. Probably don't feel like eating never mind cooking the blooming stuff. Can DH not just open something in a packet and let you stay in bed?

Crayfish salad here tonight. I could happily live on sea food.

Not many people like mackerel JollyG I love it and I'm going to try your poaching method. My mother used to poach haddock in milk. It was revolting!

Brendawymms Thu 20-Nov-14 18:09:38

Steak and mushroom pie with puff pastry. Too much work really, even with supermarket pastry. My DH will just eat it without comment.

We are having a home cooked curry , made by DD.

Himself has gone to Footie , so hope he has a win , as he will enjoy it even more !!

I loved mackerel when I had just caught them an hour before we cooked them! Not so keen inland...

NanKate Sat 22-Nov-14 15:37:14

It could be chaotic at supper as DS DinL and the two GSs are on a quick over night stop over.

I am cooking fish fingers and chips for eldest GS
Chicken and Chips for little GS as he is allergic to fish and many other things.

The 4 of us were going to have a relaxed evening having a Tailor Made Coconut Curry, followed by apple pie, HOWEVER, we have been asked to babysit so DS and DinL can go to the cinema, so I will have to cook their curry early and then cook our curry after the children are in bed. hmm

I will do it because I love them all. I just hope they remember this when I am really old and decrepit. grin

Nonu As you know we are curry lovers also and usually have one Saturday night but this week giving it a miss as I was tempted by Aldi's rump steaks to-day and their potato au gratin so an easy peasy meal to-night for us.
