If there were 3 'can't live withouts' what would they be? Not just things you like, but 3 things that you would crave forever if you were denied them.
Mine; Earl Grey Tea
marmalade
cheese

Well, yes, it's the taste aspect which puts me off - no problem with fat as we get through rather a lot of butter. I can understand bread and dripping, as it would be meat-flavoured.

I will try it on a very tiny piece of bread.

Just did. It's allright. Rather tasteless if anything. Lard doesn't have a strong taste so it was really just a way of getting sugar to stick to bread, I suppose. I can see why kids would like it. I think I can live without any more of it though.

Used to ask my Granny for 'sugar butties', still remember the crunch; must have been a thing just after the war when stuff was still rationed.

Mayonnaise
Fish
Yoghurt

Grannybug Wed 09-Jul-14 00:04:26

Fish, redbush tea, salad

Nelliemoser Wed 09-Jul-14 00:10:29

I could understand eating dripping, despite being a veggie, as it has flavour. but lard!!! Yuk.

Tegan Wed 09-Jul-14 00:52:52

Is Redbush tea addictive? Even though, when I first tasted it I thought I was drinking TCP, I now get all fidgety if I run out of it. We used to eat bread and lard [had to have salt with it] along with sugar sandwiches and pigs feet.

kittylester Wed 09-Jul-14 07:15:22

My dad used to make us sugar sandwiches every now and again (as a treat) but mum was horrified! I suspect she thought it was common. shock

There's no food that I couldn't live without, because due to intolerances I did have to live without them for years, but I would definitely crave a cup mug of tea, especially in the morning.

HollyDaze Wed 09-Jul-14 08:05:38

HollyDaze has an edible hot water bottle

The OP didn't say things had to be edible rosesarered but as my hot water bottle is very dear to me, I am happy to try and eat it to keep it on my list grin

hildajenniJ Wed 09-Jul-14 08:05:52

I couldn't manage without
Bread, any sort but particularly tiger bread.
Tea
Rice, basmati and pudding.

NfkDumpling Wed 09-Jul-14 08:14:54

Toast - pref brown whole meal, but any toast will do, best with butter and Marmite,
Mayonnaise - if salad accompaniment isn't available good chips will do,
Bacon - good back bacon fried until the fat is crispy.

(I had sugar sandwiches most days after school - cheapest white bread, margarine, then made I believe from Texan oil now illegal, and white granulated sugar. Then off next door to share toast and well salted dripping with my granddad. Bad, very bad!)

We really are a savoury lot - is it an age thing?

NanKate Wed 09-Jul-14 10:22:29

Never heard of tiger bread Hilda what is it ?

rosequartz Wed 09-Jul-14 10:42:40

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_bread - and rolls!

rosequartz Wed 09-Jul-14 10:43:35

Also found in Tesco and probably elsewhere

Nanalogue Wed 09-Jul-14 13:06:39

Sprinkles sandwiches too! Very crunchy!
Lard however, disgusting. On so many levels.

rosesarered Wed 09-Jul-14 19:19:19

Tiger bread is crusty white bread with a slightly stripey top [nearly all supermarkets sell it, and Sainsburys sell giraffe bread as well!]Could never bring myself to eat anything with lard on it, or [even as a child, sugar on bread.]HollyDaze Yes, I should have said edible I guess [but I did put this on the food thread.]grinYou do seem very fond of the hot water bottle [even in July?] so you can keep it and you needn't eat it.

rosesarered Wed 09-Jul-14 19:21:03

If I had been asked this question when I was about 10 years old I would have said chip butties
bacon butties
fish finger butties [how were we all so thin as children?]

rosesarered Wed 09-Jul-14 19:21:51

You still haven't asked your DH's what their 3 can't live withouts are?

Grannybug Wed 09-Jul-14 20:03:39

Tegan agree about redbush tea! I changed years ago to redbush and it's my main beveridge every day.(smile)

rosequartz Wed 09-Jul-14 20:21:31

I drank redbush tea for a very long time, but now I can't stand it! Just went off it (not pregnant!)

rosesarered Thu 10-Jul-14 20:39:17

This is what the ladies drink in the Number 1 ladies Detective Agency isn't it?What does red bush tea taste like? Please don't say red bushes.

rosequartz Thu 10-Jul-14 20:46:13

I sent them all my spare packets. They are trying to work out where they came from.

Next books in the series: 'The Full Cupboard of Rooibos Tea'

Tegan Fri 11-Jul-14 10:23:19

It tastes of TCP roses. But, strangely enough, only the first time you drink it. After that it just tastes lovely in an interesting way.
