Scallops for supper - will this work?

I've not really cooked scallops ever before (have eaten them) - but they were at such a good price at Lidl today that I bought some. I also have a few smallish pieces of fresh cod. Will this work for tonight?

Flash fry the scallops in butter with slivers of fresh ginger
Same with the fish
Serve on noodles with sweet chili sauce?

Or is that just too unimaginative. Please help! Preferably something quick because I'm going to be short of time. I'd like to use the fish and the scallops.

Thanks in advance tbwink

Will try that too river. The best scallops I've ever tasted were in the Outer Hebrides last year - so fresh and served simply on pasta with a light chilli sauce. OMW that was tasty x

Love them in a white wine and cheese sauce

jolly I love ceviche - will check out the recipe.

Please look up ceviche scallops. I can easily eat them raw

I would find the Chorizo too strong just as I would black pudding.

The one I mentioned previously came with the coral, much more eye appeal than the sans coral ones.

Scallops and chorizo is a great combination .... just quickly saute scallops in the zingy orange oil which oozes from the sausage. smile

That sounds very good, jollyg !

Grannyknot just a thought if you do it again, do you think it might have a bit more eye appeal if the spring onions were cut very thinly down the length?

A bit late.

I love scallops, the Queen dont eat shellfish, queasy tum?

I buy mine in the fishmongers, they are hand dived, and come with a shell.

He takes them out of the shell, gets rid of the gubbins, and gives me them in shell.

I whizz up some stale breadcrumbs from the freezer.

To the inshell scallops, I add some sliced small tomatoes round the shell, add some tube garlic, or the Aioli one, in Morrisons, a tad butter, cover in breadcrumbs, and add some cream on top.

10 mins in the convection microwave@ 200, in a tray , make sure they do not tip on the side

Thanks for coming back and letting us know, so glad it worked! I think the spring onion/ginger combo is used quite a bit in Chinese cooking.

That's good - you prompted me to put scallops on my shopping list! smile

Grannyknot Thu 24-Jul-14 20:59:23

Hi everyone, my scallop supper was great - and Phoenix the chopped spring onions just made it. Think I'll crowdsource recipes more often on here smile

Be glad to Charleygirl! Although I'm not overly fond of fish (I really have to fancy it, and for me part of the problem is the smell when cooking it) my Cheats Chowder is quick, easy and rather yummy, even if I do say so myself!

grin

This talk of yummy food is making me feel hungry. If I put in a request phoenix will that be okay? It would be a bit of a journey from London but I think that you may be a good cook and I am a good washer upper and cat sitter. Fish would be my ideal choice please!

The Lidl frozen king prawns (caldera brand, or something like that) are also really good. Big, meaty ones that keep their texture in a Thai curry, or also when added to my Cheats Chowder, and £2.49 for a box of around 26/28

glammanana Thu 24-Jul-14 16:33:05

I love them so easy to do and dress up as you wish,I like to serve them on a bed of cuscus one of the flavoured ones do it for me I always put a big dollop of allioli on the side but that is just a personal choice.Lidl's are always so fresh, love their King Prawn's also.

Anne58 Thu 24-Jul-14 16:31:23

It was a quite a reasonable quantity too, Grannyknot I was very tempted, but himself isn't home until tomorrow evening and has put in an order for a request for Salad Nicoise.

We never eat shellfish - my OH calls them "sewage filters"!

Grannyknot Thu 24-Jul-14 16:05:31

Oops didn't see jane had also replied. Yes I love scallops and have a memory of having them when we were on holiday in North Uist, simply prepared and that's what I'm hoping to recapture.

They were about £3 at Lidl today and seem (look) really fresh. Yum.

whenim64 Thu 24-Jul-14 16:05:30

Yes, that's them done if your pan is nice and hot.

Grannyknot Thu 24-Jul-14 16:02:34

Thanks both. That's a good idea re putting them round the edge of the pan. And once you've flipped them and got back to number 1 is that them done?

I'm lazy to make a fish pie tonight ... tbsmile hence the noodle option.

whenim64 Thu 24-Jul-14 15:54:11

Yes, flash frying like that will work and so will putting them in a fish pie. I fry them by placing them around the edge of the pan clockwise and when I get back to the first one I put in, they're ready to flip over. Love scallops!

janerowena Thu 24-Jul-14 15:54:09

Or mangetouts?

You lucky thing - scallops are my favourite!

Anne58 Thu 24-Jul-14 15:29:42

Or spring onions, cut very fine?

Anne58 Thu 24-Jul-14 15:28:56

Perhaps add some chopped shallot?

Anne58 Thu 24-Jul-14 15:28:30

Definitely sounds worth a try!
