I have been blogging about 'My Life in Sandwiches' because flavours seems to conjure up so many associated memories from my childhood.

Do share your sandwich-based memories and stories. It is lovely that my sandwich memories spark recognition among my family and friends too. Shared food experiences connect us to others so closely.

In the last paragraph - my grandfather used to bring them back during the war, whenever he came home on leave. He was in the navy and went all over the place. His final trip ashore was always to buy some fairly unripe bananas and a couple of pineapples, they would be stored in the ship's fridges, and my mother always thought that bananas came in black skins.

Several months ago, I was introduced to fish finger sandwiches by a friend's daughter. I'd never eaten a fish finger, and didn't fancy starting with a fish finger butty.

I'm a total convert, perfect comfort food. I'm not a tomato sauce fan, but tend to have mine with a few baked beans.
Sorry if I turned anyone's tummy with this

My favourite childhood sandwich was the cheese n tomato, with bananas a close 2nd.

Oooh, sugar sandwiches.
When I was little, coming in from school ravenous.
Cheap white sliced bread, margarine and granulated sugar. I remember the crunch now, and some of the sugar hitting the Lino in cold weather when the marg was too hard for it to stick in the sandwich.

Mash potato and oxo gravy - best sandwiches ever

Let's hope the food police aren't reading this thread. I wonder if the current generation of children will rave about coming home to a piece of fruit, or a chopped up carrot. Before anyone shoots me - I do understand, and accept, the need for healthy eating, but sugar sandwiches, mash and oxo gravy, not a single one of our 5 a day, but delicious all the same.

Chip butties, banana sandwiches, fish finger sandwiches - all totally delicious!

I lived in Lancashire as a child and, when I was about eight, a family from London moved in nearby and I became great friends with the little girl who was almost the same age as me. She introduced me to what I thought of as THE most heavenly sandwiches... golden syrup on very fresh white sliced bread. We used to eat them after school at her house and very, very occasionally (about once every three years!) I still secretly have one and it tastes just as good, if not better! Suddenly I am eight years old again, in my brown and white check school uniform, standing in my friend's kitchen dipping into that distinctive green and gold Lyle and Scott tin full of glistening, golden delight... smile

I never let my children have them, far too unhealthy and ruinous to teeth. grin

I love crisp sandwiches too, cheese and onion preferably. I love smoked salmon and soft cheese on wholemeal bread, cheese sandwiches on white bread, banana sandwiches, egg sandwiches. I love sandwiches generally.
As for memories from childhood, I loved fish paste confusedand meat paste sandwiches, I also used to eat sugar sandwiches (yes really) and when no crisps were available, cornflake sandwiches smile

Oo yes and chip butties of course.

kittylester Fri 29-Aug-14 14:19:28

Lots of us ate sugar sandwiches ^^, Katy. grin

I love chip butties but they are not the same on GF bread. They have to be home made chips, rubbish white bread, tons of butter, salt and vinegar. Now I've typed it, I'm almost prepared to risk the consequences for a chip butty!! grin

kitty - and here's me thinking I was unique with my sugar sandwiches grin
and I agree re the chip butties. All that lovely butter oozing out of the sandwich.......

I loved Dairylea cheese triangles in a sandwich, with tomatoes or pickled onions (sliced). I also remember the lovely crunch of a sugar butty, and banana sandwiches on warm days after school, eaten in the garden. Have Dairylea triangles become softer over the years. I remember being able to slice them thinly to put in my sandwich. ( Mmm, licks lips in remerbrance).

I still eat banana sandwiches for lunch sometimes.

You are right, Kitty, not the same on gf bread. I made some in the breadmaker last week, the magpies seemed to like it anyway.

My mother was a working single parent and money was very tight. I remember coming home from my junior school in the 50's and making myself sandwiches for my tea with bread, Stork margarine and sugar. It wasn't the healthiest meal, obviously, but I managed to survive on it!

A potato pie butty ...mmm but the heartburn after.

Salad cream butty, pourable sunshine.

Golden syrup, but on white toasted bread.

Chocolate spread on a Warburton's crust.

Egg mayonnaise on curled up white bread, like at the end of a buffet.

Louisa ditto 're mother single parent - not a sandwich memory this, but our big treat conjured up by my mom would be a fresh leaf of crisp iceberg lettuce filled with sugar along the "spine" and rolled up like a cigar smile and eaten like a banana!

My favourite childhood sandwich was peanut butter and apricot jam.

I had marmite sandwiches and an apple for my packed lunch throughout my entire school life.
Now sandwiches are a rare treat because of the low GI diet, but I love egg and mayo, goat's cheese (and marmite) and cheese and tomato.
