mince pies that don't keep!

It's happened again, mince pies are spontaneously disappearing, this time even before they reach the freezer. Mrs.P is watching them closely, but cannot spot the moment this curious event occurs.

pompa, I'm not buying - or making- mince pies yet just in case they are of the disappearing variety, like yours are.

Perhaps £2 for 2 packs is just tooooo cheap? Serious question ;)

Nope, the price is just right.Anyway, they would vanish whatever price we paid, it's what men do.Along with that very plaintive call of 'what's for dinner?' which usually comes about an hour before I'm even thinking of making any dinner.

Which are better - deep-fill, flat, short-crust, puff, traditional, iced, and are they better hot or cold? Also, do we like icing sugar shaken on top?

Home-made, short crust- mincemeat mixed with gradted apple for less sweet taste- no icing sugar- warm but not hot. And not too many...

Papa, apart from the icing sugar, which i don't like, I would have to carry out exhaustive trials to decide which I liked best.

I'm looking forward to some mince pies when we get to England on Friday. I forgot to buy mincemeat when we were there in September I must remember to bring some back with me (well wrapped in the suitcase), because everyone knows mincemeat is a dangerous substance!!!

Really odd thing happening here....the homemade stollen didn't keep either, not even long enough for me to have a slice....., pretty sure we don't have mice, least of all ones capable of getting into a click & lock container.....

I bought a pack of 4 in the village shop today, made locally. They are bigger than average, and I only succumbed when I had heard at least 3 people buying extra packs and saying how good they are.

They are in the cupboard.
The extra thick brandy cream is in the fridge.

They MUST NOT be allowed to meet each other yet!

Beware, Phoenix, of the enormously powerful magnetic attraction that a combination of home-made mince pies and thick brandy-cream exerts. The only way to overcome this well-reported phenomenon is to adopt Oscar Wilde's solution - consume both rapidly, then the temptation will no longer exist!

Being totally honest- I am really glad they do not sell them here- and especially not at silly prices (as said, how can they produce a quality product, paying fruit producers and pickers, and producers, employees- a decent wage at 2 boxes for £2- the mind boggles).

Not made any yet- and that way they won't disappear- will make some fresh for kids and grandkids arriving Sunday night- just a dozen- and then will make 3 trays for over Xmas- then basta- won't see (or eat one) until next Christmas. Seasonal produce like this taste so much better when closely linked to that special time. Hot cross buns for Easter- and strawberries in early Summer- raspberries in late Summer/autumn. Easting in season and according to special traditions make the food taste so much better in my honest opinion. Each to their own, of course.

Just to make you gasp - we saw some hot cross buns in the shop last Friday

I don't know how they sell them for that price, so assume they must be a 'loss leader'

No Christmas puddings or mince pies at all left in Lidl today (I will make my own and have made the pud, but wanted to put some in a box for the food bank, not allowed to contribute my own).
