Seeing a mention of Gipsy tart in the pudding thread reminded me of Gipsy Cream biscuits, and also Ayton Sandwiches, which were similar.

Where did they go?

When I was little a small bag of 'Iced Gems' seemed like heaven to me. However, when I had them as an adult I realised they were lumps of hard icing on an plain, indifferent biscuit base. However, a Digestive never lets you down.

The best biscuits in the world, bar none, are plain choc digestives.smile

Never heard of the 'milk and honey' biscuits ( sound nice though) or Royal Scot or Buzz Bars. maybe a regional thing?

Spindrift Wed 16-Mar-16 21:39:23

I used to love Royal Scott biscuits, even gave them to my babies mixed with warm milk over them, they loved them too

PRINTMISS Wed 16-Mar-16 11:28:27

Does anyone remember the "Buzz Bars" you could get from the Lyons teashops (corner-houses). They were individual biscuits, and I remember them as being absolutely delicious, a special treat from my gran when she took me shopping.

There used to be Ryvita, Vita-Wheat and MacVita. I liked Vita-Wheat. MacVita were the crumbliest.

Id forgotten about Royal Scott that's a biscuit from my childhood, my fathers favourite and he used to share them with me. I love a fig roll now and always make sure I have them for when my friend and her husband call in for coffee, she doesn't like them so they don't buy them, he thinks he's getting a treat at my house and eats half a packet with is coffee!

Parsleywin Tue 15-Mar-16 19:24:03

I wouldn't normally cross the street to get a biscuit - but I know I'd crawl over broken glass for a box of Milk and Honey! [do we have a piggy icon?]

Daddima - were Playbox in a long rectangular packet? And was the icing eye-wateringly sweet, cos I think I remember those too? Summer afternoons as a youngster come flooding back. grin

Daddima Tue 15-Mar-16 17:34:14

Yes, ladycatlover and Parsleywin, I remember the Milk & Honey Creams. They were yummy.

Parsleywin Tue 15-Mar-16 17:09:19

Yes, ladycatlover! I was going to mention the late, lamented Milk and Honey too. They were the best, weren't they?

Falconbird Tue 15-Mar-16 16:02:30

rosesarered - I want to come to your house. Biscuit tins seem to have gone out of use round my way.

I used to love the malted milk biscuits with the shape of a cow on them. I used to try and nibble around the cow but never managed. It. You can still buy them.

Teacher11. - When I was a child the manager at the local grocery store used to hand me a bag to fill with broken biscuits (for free!!).

I don't know if he did this for every child but he may have been keen of my mum. smile

rosesarered Tue 15-Mar-16 13:08:07

Falconbird doesn't everyone still have a biscuit tin? We do.There are even biscuits in it!

Granny23 Tue 15-Mar-16 13:02:13

Spent last night trying to remember the name of my favourite long gone biscuits and it popped into my head this am. HAMPDEN WAFERS They were like small caramel wafers with thick plain chocolate - I can taste them now.

ladycatlover Tue 15-Mar-16 11:20:17

The biscuits I miss the most are Huntley and Palmer's Milk and Honey Creams. Anyone else remember them? Was devastated when they stopped making them.

Thank you Daddima - I think you are right, because the same thought came to me in bed at 1am this morning!!!! Oh I miss those biscuits, they were my favourite treat!!

Teacher11 Tue 15-Mar-16 10:05:31

Bath Olivers are large, round, plain, floury tasting savoury biscuits and they can still be found in large Sainsbury's stores. They are ace with cheese and some medlar jelly or, as my DH tells me, pickled walnuts.

My mother worked as a cashier in the Co-op when I was young and brought home large, brown paper bagsful of broken biscuits, of which the pink wafers were the most prized.

I had forgotten all about Jamborees but loved them and, indeed any gooey or sweet or chocolatey or creamy biscuit. When I was little I couldn't see the point of plain biscuits like Rich Tea or Maries or even Butter Osbornes. Still can't really as, if you are going to waste a few calories on something that does you no good, you might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb.

Modern biscuits just don't compete with the old 'uns. Except for Hobnobs and Chocolate Hobnobs which are epic!

I eat two plain McVities Digestives for my breakfast with good Kenyan coffee every day and count my blessings.

Daddima Tue 15-Mar-16 09:42:25

Princesspamma, I think the iced biscuits were called Playbox.

Oh, and I saw Bath Olivers in Waitrose yesterday.

Falconbird Tue 15-Mar-16 07:13:21

In the 60s and 70s everyone I knew had a biscuit tin to pass around when anyone called in. I had one with a top that contained some sort of crystals that kept the biscuits from going soggy.

Also in restaurants the waiter would bring round a selection of cheeses and biscuits.

I tasted my first Bourbon biscuit at my 7th Birthday. I thought they were wonderful. I loved Ice Gems as well. You can still buy both these biscuits.

ellenemery Tue 15-Mar-16 06:21:06

Boxes of broken biscuits are still available in Iceland and Farmfoods. The ones in Iceland are about £2.50 for quite a good size box and contain plain and cream biscuits. The last box we purchased had some really big chunky chocolate cookies and chocolate creams.

Royal Scot. I had forgotten about those. My dad used to love them but again they were a real treat.

princesspamma Tue 15-Mar-16 00:14:00

Does anyone remember those biscuits from the '60's - they were rectangular, iced (like party rings), with lots of designs and pictures - I seem tomremember a swan, perhaps a number, etc.....they were aimed at children, possibly called something "box"???

oldperson Tue 15-Mar-16 00:02:13

sports biscuits weren't malted milk, they were a plain sweet oblong biscuit with various different sports depicted by stick figures.

Rosina Mon 14-Mar-16 22:17:56

I disagree - Bath Olivers are large plain biscuits that are wonderful with strongly flavoured cheese and they don't shatter into a thousand crumbs!

whitewave Mon 14-Mar-16 21:33:01

They are boring

shirleyhick Mon 14-Mar-16 21:31:54

I too have never heard of bath olivers will be interesting to find out more.
