I've always enjoyed them, toasted with butter, but was disconcerted in M&S. This year they have EIGHT different versions. Has anyone tried them? I can't taste/test them all!

Quite like * whiteweave* makes me feel creative grin

All this talk of HCBs has made me eat two after my main course!!!

Indinana Thu 24-Mar-16 19:54:17

They look really lovely nelliem. Nicely domed with a lovely shiny glaze. I must have another go at making them - haven't made buns since the DC were little.

durhamjen Thu 24-Mar-16 19:54:40

Had to pick up my granddaughter from school today. She had one of her brother's hot cross buns, and enjoyed it. That must be a first for her.
They were wholemeal ones as well.

Jalima Thu 24-Mar-16 19:57:12

Did he make them djen?
Very good, DS always enjoyed cooking and still does.

Jalima Thu 24-Mar-16 19:58:13

I wove myself a scarf when I was young. It was many colours, not white though.
(sorry, should be on the craft thread grin)

jalima I haven't a creative bone in my body so wish I did.

whitewave Thu 24-Mar-16 20:35:57

How's your HCBs doing jing?

durhamjen Thu 24-Mar-16 20:37:45

Yes, he did, Jalima. He really likes baking, and we do it one afternoon most weeks.
Today, it was nearly all day. First step, then maths for an hour; next step, then reading; next step, then lunch; next step, then art. Kneading it by hand as my machine broke down last year. It gives him a real sense of achievement.

My glaze chrystallised, but they are buns. And they are hot. And they've got sort of crosses on them.

NanKate Thu 24-Mar-16 21:43:42

I only eat hot cross buns at Easter but many folk eat them all year round. I'm looking forward to ours tomorrow. smile

whitewave Thu 24-Mar-16 21:56:31

Blimey they look good jing hope you aren't going to eat all of them

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 24-Mar-16 22:02:35

We've had one each. Think Mary Berry was a bit stingy on the sugar. I suppose they're not meant to be very sweet.

whitewave Thu 24-Mar-16 22:04:12

With butter?

durhamjen Thu 24-Mar-16 22:20:29

We used Jamie Oliver's recipe, and he glazes them with apricot conserve, which is delicious. Fortunately I had a jar in the cupboard.

whitewave Thu 24-Mar-16 22:22:13

Well I hope you all become totally fat!

I am totallyenvy

durhamjen Thu 24-Mar-16 22:31:36

My grandson would never get fat no matter how many he ate. Anyway, he only made ten, two each. Although that depends on the size of them all.
The glaze was only one tablespoon of apricot jam between the ten of them.

If we lived closer, I'm sure he'd make some for you as well, whitewave.

whitewave Thu 24-Mar-16 22:33:25

smile how generous

1974cookie Thu 24-Mar-16 22:38:09

I love Hot Cross buns and I cannot wait to try them with a filling of bacon as shown by a current TV advert. It actually sounds like it will work !!!
They also make a fabulous Bread and Butter pudding too

Nelliemoser Thu 24-Mar-16 23:00:19

I have just tried one of mine. It's flipping gorgeous but I would probably. cut down a little on the sugar or not brush them with golden syrup.
This recipe is really good

I should have made bread and butter pudding with the ones left in the freezer from last year!

I want a home-made one now, not my M&S ones.

Badenkate Thu 24-Mar-16 23:11:04

Don't want to be a grump sunshinesunshinesunshinesunshinesunshine

But aren't you supposed to wait until Good Friday before you eat your HCBs?

durhamjen Thu 24-Mar-16 23:14:28

Yes, but only if you bother about Lent.

Nelliemoser Thu 24-Mar-16 23:15:48

Badenkate Probably but I got carried away and made 12 and there are only two of us to eat them.

They go on sale just after christmas in Asda.
I certainly would not want fancy flavours in them. I like the spices and lemon zest.

grannyqueenie Thu 24-Mar-16 23:46:21

Blimey roses you must have started that research as soon as the mince pies left the supermarket shelves grin. I'm feeling deprived I haven't eaten a single one this year, Easter seems to have crept up on me this year.
