I've always enjoyed them, toasted with butter, but was disconcerted in M&S. This year they have EIGHT different versions. Has anyone tried them? I can't taste/test them all!

I found some M&S (luxury) ones in the freezer from last year jalima, popped one in the toaster, delicious! Every bit as moist and yummy as when they went in the freezer! So good I felt compelled to eat another one let M&S know how well they kept. grin

Every time we go into M&S we buy some ( and have for some time now) they make a nice breakfast, with a cup of tea and a chopped banana.smile

Tried all of them. Apple and cinnamon ones are good toasted. For me the best hot cross buns are from Asda. Yummy when fresh and great when toasted. Mini HCBs are the best idea because with the really fresh ones I'd love to eat two.

Chocolate and fudge/toffee are definitely a bun too far for me.

I make my own, and put a lump of marzipan in the middle as a surprise. Delicious! grin

Any HCB- any flavour for me- love them. Funnily enough although I make all my own bread I have never managed a really good HCB.

I am quite grateful for the chocolate/ caramel ones as 3 of my GC won't touch dried fruit (just like their dad!). I must get to M&S before it is too late- the St Cements ones sound gorgeous.
The Fast Diet starts again next week!

I've tried the apple ones and sad to say that they are not as good as tesco's

A few years ago after resisting HCBs for weeks I went to buy some on Good Friday only to find they were sold out. I asked a young assistant - 'oh, they've been very popular today for some reason' he said!

I made Hot Cross Apple scones - they were delicious. Waitrose recipe

I have fond memories of walking to the village bakers to buy warm hot cross buns on Good Friday morning, the smell as you went into the shop was wonderful. If I remember rightly the the paper shop and the bakers shops only opened half day on Good Friday. All the shops in the village closed half day on Wednesday and nothing opened on a Sunday.

I mentioned that to DS when they came today; we used to go down to the village on Good Friday for freshly baked hot cross buns, served in a paper bag.
The ones from M&S were stodgy. I put my breakfast ones in the oven and they were not nice, the rest I burnt toasted when the family came. In fact the GF ones were the best (most unusual).

Used to walk to the bakers for a dozen fresh ones when the kids were young. OH got up this morning and said I won't be long , he drove to where he knew there was an old fashioned bakers and came back with 4 delicious fresh traditional HCB they were delice..

Tesco's luxury hot cross buns. Best by far. Fabulous moist texture and big, fat, juicy dried fruits. They cost more but are nicer even than those made by Waitrose or M and S.

Grrrrrr, had to walk to Tesco (car broken down) got there to find they had sold out of Finest HCBs.

I love any kind, any way and anywhere.

Jalima Fri 25-Mar-16 22:47:55

perhaps Tesco will still have some tomorrow hmm

Waitrose won on points this year - pop mine in the microwave for 20secs then sandwich with lashings of butter and hold a plate underneath smile

I've allowed the bread machine out from the back of the cupboard to make hot cross bun dough for me ... not sure I was quick enough flinging in the raisins though!

durhamjen Sat 26-Mar-16 15:21:48

I am just in the middle of making another lot for tomorrow.
Reading all this stuff about schools and Nicky Morgan really helps in the kneading process.
