There is a shortage of c ourgettes, peppers etc imported from Spain. First world problem I know but what vegetable can't you do without? For me its onions, the starting point for many a meal.

thatbags Thu 19-Jan-17 07:34:52

Yep. Onions.

thatbags Thu 19-Jan-17 07:36:46

Not that keen on courgettes, except in chocolate cake and marrow chutney.

No shortage in our Tesco!

I think we've got used to having fresh fruit and veg all the year round and the prices are going to go up, but I think fresh tomatoes are the one thing I'd miss if we really went back the being completely seasonal. I know we used to eat more tinned fruit/ veg in the past, but who really likes tinned carrots, peas, pears etc? Tinned tomatoes are good in cooking, but couldn't eat them as they come.

Courgettes are so easy to grow that we always have a glut in the Summer. This means that I don't want to buy or even see one out of season.

I read there would be a shortage of spinach this year as well. I can live without courgettes and spinach but not onions, carrots, swede etc. Love root vegetables.
Tinned veg are awful generally, does anyone remember those tins of vegetable macedoine that tasted of nothing at all.

Katek Thu 19-Jan-17 08:22:27

My mil used those in the 70's and they were just awful. What did they do to the veg to remove all trace of taste?

Anya Thu 19-Jan-17 08:33:35

Pittcity me too!

Grannyknot Thu 19-Jan-17 08:38:01

suzie but is it just me or are most tomatoes now completely tasteless? Whatever happened to that sunkissed taste of fresh tomatoes? I often take one bite (I eat them like the fruit that they are) and chuck the rest in the bin.

Pittcity Thu 19-Jan-17 08:45:41

I agree Grannyknot I have given up buying expensive tasteless imported tomatoes unless I am cooking with them (then I look out for reduced ones) I am waiting until tasty local ones are available again!

Anya Thu 19-Jan-17 08:47:29

Never! I've had some delicious tomatoes recently - but you have to choose for flavour and avoid those generic 'moneymaker' types.

ninathenana Thu 19-Jan-17 08:56:17

I can't remember the last time I ate a courgette. I've never cooked one or a marrow.
I couldn't do without the versatile spud.

Badenkate Thu 19-Jan-17 08:56:42

Courgettes, red peppers and red onions are our favourites for a stirfry veg accompaniment for most things.

Katek Thu 19-Jan-17 09:07:23

I tend to buy smaller cherry/plum tomatoes on the vine as they do have a better taste. Don't like the bigger ones that seem to be all water.

Nelliemoser Thu 19-Jan-17 09:08:36

chelseababy Yes! thats mine as well. Start chopping an onion or two and the start to think what to put with it.

I think I heard the weather in Spain has been really bad for vege crops this year.

Greyduster Thu 19-Jan-17 09:27:31

Like others, for me it would be onions; I'm not a fan of courgettes. Celery, too, I don't like to be without. I only buy vine tomatoes - at least they smell of tomatoes even if the taste leaves a lot to be desired, but my preference is for the smaller sweeter varieties. How spoiled we are now, though. When I was a child, you could probably count on two hands the varieties of vegetables you saw in the winter months, and who had ever even heard of a courgette or a pepper?

shysal Thu 19-Jan-17 09:38:34

Since trying to eat fewer carbs I have become a great fan of cauliflower, it is so versatile, roasted, mashed and grated so would miss it. I like banana shallots too, but fortunately grow enough of my own to last the whole year.

Stansgran Thu 19-Jan-17 09:46:21

It's lovely that we have so much variety now. I really like those jars of peas and carrots you get in French supermarkets blush
DH has taken over the shopping but he is still not a good vegetable buyer. He never buys enough and I like to have a basic soup on a regular basis with celery onion and carrot.

Lazigirl Thu 19-Jan-17 09:46:47

I wondered where all the courgettes had gone, I use them a lot, great for spiralizing and in veg bakes. I would miss cauliflower too shysal for the same reasons as you. Since low carbing I have come to resemble a cauliflower smile

Kittye Thu 19-Jan-17 09:48:24

Carrots and onions

Swanny Thu 19-Jan-17 10:03:24

Definitely potatoes, with onions a close second!

I'm sure growers and dieticians are in cahoots over the 5 a day recommendations. We certainly didn't have that when I was a child and as a generation we're living longer than ever grin

PS I always remove tomatoes from the fridge a couple of hours before eating, the flavour seems much better.

TriciaF Thu 19-Jan-17 10:19:24

I saw that item on BBC news this morning. They said something about the ground being too wet to plant the new crop.
I saw some today at 1.80€ a kilo, lovely fresh produce, also peppers and aubergines, but we're not far from the Spanish border.
I wonder whether the replanting story is the real reason?
Onions are my favourite. We like fennel too.

TriciaF Thu 19-Jan-17 10:25:34

ps - I've just looked it up and the reason is the extreme cold, courgettes etc are very susceptible to frost damage.
It's been a lot colder here than in the UK. Still is.

POGS Thu 19-Jan-17 10:44:26

Spuds.
