Ikea ones are yummy but our nearest store 40 milmilaway on the other side of the Dartford tunnel, not a journey to be undertaken lightly grin

Lidls ready cooked ones are lovely, just need warming and sauce or gravy added.

Ikea meatballs all the way !

They make chicken and veggie varieties now too .

I brown them in the frying pan, and then add them to the sauce. I never add breadcrumbs to meatballs.

If I brown them in a pan, they often fall apart. My son does them in the oven and makes the sauce separately to pour over after part cooking and this works well.

I brown them in butter and cook them covered, in the oven.

My DH makes the best meatballs (according to all the family and friends) ! He browns them in a pan then cooks them in the sauce ( passata) . He is Italian and has had a lot of practice !!?

While scrolling through channels yesterday, I saw a bit of a Jamie Oliver programme and he was certainly browning them in a frying pan.

I make my own. I mix the meat with an egg, seasoning and some grated cheese, which seems to stop them drying out.

I have to make my own (I'm a coeliac). My favourites are pork,Parmesan, sage, small amount of breadcrumbs and an egg. The other recipe is one of Delia's...meatballs in Goulash sauce.

Badly worded op sorry

I've always browned in a frying pan but all recipes I've looked at on line say in the oven apart from Nigella's.
Do you all make your own balls ? Or buy them ready formed.

Browning them in an oven would dry them out too much. Yes, brown in a frying pan - you won't need much oil (if any).

Indinana Wed 25-Jan-17 18:43:05

Always brown them first, usually by frying them in either olive or coconut oil.

I'm another who browns them first to firm them up. The only recipe I use for meatballs involves cooking them on top of a sort of tomato risotto dish that goes in the oven.

I fry them very gently in a bit of oil first. This colours them and firms them as well. I tried putting them straight into the sauce and found the meatballs disintegrated into mush.

Do you brown them in the oven first ?
I usually do but I find they can become a bit 'dense'. I'm wondering if adding them straight to the sauce will make them softer.
Has anyone tried this method ?
Nigella has a recipe for this method.
