Pancake sacrilege!

Evening all, hope everyone is well.

With Shrove Tuesday nearly upon us, my thoughts turn to........pancakes!

A visit to the supermarket showed various items being promoted as being "perfect for pancakes". These included squeezy golden syrup and various types of chocolate spread.

Yesterday's Daily Telegraph included such suggestions as parmesan and spinach or rhubarb and blood Orange.shock

stop it RIGHT now!

Pancakes should be served with lemon juice and sugar, and preferably made by someone who can make them faster than I can eat them. grin

I've never heard of leftover pancakes either....and we always use every last bit of batter so the last pancake is more like a lace doily! Funny how my darling Mum always had the first one...the thick rubbery one and then the lacy one at the end.....we had the rest!

If you have any leftover pancakes, by the way

What does that mean? grin grin grin grin grin

Indinana Tue 28-Feb-17 23:11:48

roses - those Lyons Corner House pancakes - if I remember rightly they actually called them 'flapjacks', but anything less like a flapjack and more like a pancake would be hard to find grin

"only have this once a year"

Had grandson (7yr old) here after school. Had made batter up in the morning and he squeezed the lemon juice which I put into a milk jug and left him in charge of assembling the pancakes. He was a bit heavy-handed with the sugar but no one was watching us!! DH is now asking why we only that this once a year!!

I'm very proud of my efforts this morning. I made pancakes, actually they were drop scones. Nothing special in that, but I made them with gluten free flour and soya milk for my DD and grandchildren. I'd never attempted to make gluten free ones before. They were delicious.

We just ate the lot. Spelt flour and goat milk, sugar and lemon. I forgot to put a little baking powder to make them a bit lighter, but it didn't matter much!

If you have any leftover pancakes, by the way, in Germany they would be cut into thin strips (as Polyester describes, above) and served in soup (thin broth). They're fond of their little bits in the soup: Marrow dumplings, semolina dumplings, potato dumplings, egg - raw or solidified and cut into tiny cubes.

Am a lemon and sugar or syrup traditionalist myself - but this year will be making the pancakes with olive oil and buckwheat flour so as not to upset the stomachs of wheat and dairy intolerant friends! (Buckwheat is from a plant related to rhubarb and not anything to do with wheat at all).

HAPPY SHROVE TUESDAY smile enjoy your pancakes, however you eat them.

I grew up having jam on my pancakes but now, because we only have them once a year at most, I have them with chocolate sauce, ice cream and a pshshshsh of squirty cream.

I can't bear lemon ( too many bottles of Mist Pot Cit when younger) so it's butter and sugar or golden syrup for me

I live on the Continent and we have pancakes often, usually with jam, rolled up. Children like theirs with a chocolate spread. Savoury fillings, too, are common, spinach, mushrooms, cheese, whatever. The lemon juice and sugar variety is not so well known, perhaps in a fancy restaurant. My mother used to sometimes cut pancakes into strips and have them as an accompaniment to a meat dish (instead of rice or potatoes). In Croatia I have come across pancakes filled with ham and cheese, then cut into halves, coated in egg and breadcrumbs and deep fried. Delicious but very fattening. Would someone perhaps be able to share a pancake recipe that doesn´t include milk and eggs? My son is a vegan and I would love to be able to make pancakes for him. I have tried many times but they never turn out right, milk can be substituted for soy, but the hold-together factor of the egg is still missing, they disintegrate. Any ideas?

Golden syrup on pancakes, with double cream is pretty good as well.

rosesarered Mon 27-Feb-17 22:48:00

Indinana Yes, I remember those as well, they were just delicious ( I was a size 10 in those days and could eat anything I liked.)

gettingonabit Mon 27-Feb-17 22:08:52

I put a tin of Chicken Supreme in a pancake (savoury) followed by the usual lemon and sugar and butter for afters.

I'm partial to maple syrup but it's so bloody THIN...

Indinana Mon 27-Feb-17 21:58:07

And I remember going to a Lyons Corner House back in the '60s, where they served 3 small pancakes in a stainless steel boat shaped dish, swimming with maple syrup and topped with a mound of fresh cream. Absolute bliss!

Indinana Mon 27-Feb-17 21:54:29

Definitely only lemon and sugar for Shrove Tuesday - any other way is, indeed, sacrilege!
Oh but I do love summer pancakes with fresh raspberries and creme fraiche (sorry, can never work out how to get the accents on French words on my iMac)

Only27 Mon 27-Feb-17 21:39:45

Nutella and strawberries is delicious as is lemon and sugar.

I also love savoury pancakes filled with bacon and sausage. But I do have a French mother and crepes in France have a variety of fillings including savoury.

rozina Mon 27-Feb-17 21:15:36

Well I'm having bacon and blue cheese pancakes, followed by crepe suzette!

Diddy1 Mon 27-Feb-17 19:52:51

Sugar and lemon juice! My Grandson rang the other day and asked if he coud come and eat my pancakes, he always has them with lemon and sugar (no other way), here in this Country they have pancakes with jam, my Grandson is educating them on the finer things in life! nice that he has inherited a good English custom.

MaizieD Mon 27-Feb-17 18:20:08

Lemon and sugar for Shrove Tuesday pancakes of course.

When I lived in Sheffield many, many years ago we often went to an Italian restaurant which served pancakes wrapping a dollop of vanilla icecream with hot chocolate sauce poured over all. Heaven grin

anne53 Mon 27-Feb-17 18:08:47

Traditional lemon and sugar, although I do love butter and sugar when in France.

Elrel Mon 27-Feb-17 17:47:38

SW have a pancake recipe which both looked and tasted like a pancake. You just mash a banana, add a beaten egg and cook (either one or several small pancakes) in an oiled frying pan. I was most pleasantly surprised.

tanith Mon 27-Feb-17 17:17:32

I'm going to really miss pancakes this year as I love them with lemon and and sugar but recently diagnosed as type2 diabetic I seriously have to give them a miss because one just won't do it angry
OH loves them and says he's still going to make them for himself, I don't think that's very fair wink
