I love a salad cream sandwich, but the announcement that Heinz may rename Salad Cream as Sandwich Cream is a step too far.

Back in the days when I thought I could eat gluten, salad cream was an essential accompaniment to a slice of Melton Mowbray pork pie.

Tomato sandwiches with salad cream, Yum! Potato salad made with mayo, equally Yum.

Salad cream yum yum! How DARE they re-name it? - that's my childhood they're messing with!

GillT57 Wed 06-Jun-18 10:18:26

Bleurgh......hate salad cream whatever name it goes by

paddyann Wed 06-Jun-18 10:23:54

dont like it .I buy because my OH loves it on his salad,I blame the fact his mother isn't a great cook and it covered up the taste .

Nanabilly Wed 06-Jun-18 10:46:57

As long as they don't change the actual product I don't care what it's called. I love salad cream on real chips. I hate mayo because it upsets my tummy

I like the jars of Heinz sandwich spread with all the little chunky bits of veg and it goes with everything but you can keep salad cream to tangy for me. Hellmans mayo all the way

Don't like mayonnaise but love salad cream. Tuna, salad cream and chopped apple sandwich. My favourite. I first tried it in a sandwich I bought from the kitchen of the school I worked in.

Sales of salad cream have plummeted so I guess the renaming might be the last resort to keep the stuff for those who still like it.

Sad though. What next? Marmite becomes 'Brown Spread'.

TerriBull Wed 06-Jun-18 11:11:23

I think I liked it once, but that's going back a long time, it's pretty retro, I can't imagine dressing a salad with it, although people did. Not in my house though, we always had proper French dressing with olive oil, my dad was more in touch with his Mediterranean side of the family's cuisine, than the English side, he regarded salad cream as food of the devil, I guess that's why I found it a bit of a novelty because we didn't have it at home. I don't think I'd want it in a sandwich now, but I'm not keen on mayonnaise in sandwiches either.

Love a few boiled new tatties, covered in salad cream...yummo!

farmgran Wed 06-Jun-18 11:42:20

Whats the difference between salad cream and mayo?
Walnut cellery and marmite sandwiches are extra yummy!

SueDonim Wed 06-Jun-18 11:50:55

Absent could you post your SC recipe? I recall my mil making it but I cannot recall what ingredients she used!

sodapop Wed 06-Jun-18 12:07:25

I don't like salad cream either but one of my daughters loves it. When she went on school coach trips no one would sit next to her as she always had egg and salad cream sandwiches
Yuk.

I haven't had salad cream for years, but I just want to go and buy some now to make a brown bread sandwich - nothing else, just bread and salad cream. Didn't there used to be jars of salad cream with 'bits' in that they called sandwich spread - is that still available?

pollyperkins Wed 06-Jun-18 12:45:50

Thanks Fennel!

oldandbold Wed 06-Jun-18 14:44:52

I have a vague memory of being told/reading/seeing on television that salad cream was invented during either WW1 or WW2 , as a substitute for mayonnaise? Because it does not contain eggs or other more expensive ingredients??? Don’t know if this is so.....

oldandbold Wed 06-Jun-18 14:47:16

Oops have just read Fennel’s link. Thank you , all is revealed!

oldandbold Wed 06-Jun-18 14:50:42

Have just read Fennel’s link. All is revealed about the origins of salad cream! Thank you.

Lupatria Wed 06-Jun-18 14:56:07

I think this a very bad idea - everyone knows you can use salad cream in sandwiches. unless they're really stupid [sorry i'm so angry].
if you feel strongly about this proposed name change do what I did and visit www.heinz.co.uk and find 'contact us' to let them know. hopefully if enough people do this they'll change their minds.

lollee Wed 06-Jun-18 14:57:16

Potato salad definitely has more taste when made with salad cream. Finely chopped red onion and freshly ground black pepper too.

Sheilasue Wed 06-Jun-18 16:25:34

Ooo no mayonnaise for me. My son loved salad cream only way he would eat a salad, especially when he played cricket and got a tea.

Feelingmyage55 Wed 06-Jun-18 16:39:21

Renaming it is not as bad as changing the recipe to “new, improved ..”. As long as it tastes the same I will ignore the new label.

sweetcakes Wed 06-Jun-18 16:53:42

chrissyh going to have to give that sandwich a go I think, is it finely chopped or could I thinly slice it?
